Abstract

Early dental caries prevention in this case self-care oral cultivation needs to be done primarilyin primary school-aged children. Indonesians are people who have not considered oral healthsince their early years. Dental and oral health education programs with aspects that onlyemphasize the realm of knowledge is not significant enough to change the paradigm in societyand reduce the number of caries. Elementary dental school (EDS) using appreciative inquiryapproach develops positive change concept which is a new discourse in the world of healthpromotion. With the appreciative inquiry approach, the positive core that will be used as amedium of transformation builds awareness and forms a healthy paradigm in children. Theprogram seeks to raise awareness of maintaining oral hygiene through the stages of providingdance knowledge through animation and games by integrating school and home environmentsthrough the participation of teachers and parents. The results of the implementation of EDSprogram showed significant changes of knowledge in children especially seen from theincrease of post test value compared to the pre test value which experienced an increase of35.3%.

Abstract

Introduction: Mucocele is a swelling caused by the collection of saliva from the ducts of minor salivary glands that are cut off or blocked. This is a salivary gland cyst that contains mucus and generally founded in the oral cavity. Surgery is the most popular therapy in the treatment of mucocele. There are various alternative therapeutic modalities that can be used including laser ablation, cryosurgery, sclerotherapy, micromarsupialization, laser surgery, injection of sclerosis agents, and corticosteroid injection. Case and management: This paper describes the treatment of mucoceles using triamcinolone acetonide that is quite often used in the oral cavity. The therapy carried out is intradermal injection of 0.2 ml of triamcinolone acetonide IA/ID (10 mg/ml) and topical application of triamcinolone acetonide ointment in orabase 0.1% 6x/day. One week later it was seen that the mucocele lesion had almost disappeared. Discussion: Corticosteroids act as potent anti-inflammatory agents and also act like sclerosing agents causing shrinkage of the dilated salivary ducts. Conclusion: Triamcinolone acetonide can be an alternative therapy besides surgery in the management of mucocele cases. The application can be done by intradermal injection and topical ointment. No side effects were found at the end of treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: The discoloration of the oral mucosa is influenced by the presence and degree of dilation of the subepithelial corium blood vessels and the amount of melanin pigment. Changes in the oral mucosa of smokers encompass various significant pathological conditions, including smoker’s melanosis and hyposalivation. Case Report: A 27-year-old male presented to the dental hospital with complaints of black discoloration on the lower jaw gingiva, persisting for the past two years. He exhibited widespread black spots on both the upper and lower jaws without pain. The patient also reported dry lips. He had a smoking history of seven years, with a consumption of 10 cigarettes per day. Examination revealed pigmented lesions, and the patient's stimulated salivary flow rate was 0.7 ml/min. Discussion: The oral cavity is a primary gateway for toxic substances from cigarettes, while saliva is the main biological fluid exposed to cigarette smoke, which contains various toxic compounds responsible for structural and functional changes in saliva. Exposure to cigarette smoke can lead to reduced salivary flow rate (hyposalivation), changes in salivary components that may result in malignancies, and changes in the color characteristics of the oral mucosa, such as the appearance of pigmented lesions known as smoker’s melanosis. Management of hyposalivation in patients includes providing education to improve hydration and encouraging smoking cessation. Conclusion: Smoking affects the condition of an individual's oral cavity, impacting both saliva and the oral mucosa. It is crucial for dentists to educate patients about the use of tobacco and its effects on oral health.

Abstract

Introduction: Betel leaf (Piper betle Linn.) and clove leaf (Syzygium aromaticum) are Indonesian herbs which are known to cause a numb sensation. The main ingredients of betel leaf, which act as an anesthetic, are caryophyllene, eugenol, methyl eugenol, eucalyptol (1.8-cineol), linalool, α-Pinene, estragole, while cloves have local anesthetic effects through their ingredients, namely eugenol, and β-Caryophyllene. Research on the benefits of these two ingredients as topical anesthetics in Indonesia is still rare. This study was aimed to describe the potential of betel leaf and clove leaf extract as a topical anesthetic in Wistar rats. Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental research with simple randomized controlled design. The sample consisted of 6 male Wistar rats, each of which was given four treatments, namely extract with a concentration of 50%, 75%, and 100%, and topical anaesthetic benzocaine 20% as a control. Each treatment was tested using an electric stimulator and observed onset, duration of action, and depth of topical anaesthesia. The data were processed using descriptive statistics with tables and graphs. Results: Betel leaf extract with a concentration of 100% had a better mean onset, duration of work, and depth of anesthesia than the 20% benzocaine control, whereas 75% clove leaf extract had the longest duration of action compared to 20% benzocaine and 100% concentration was the topical anesthetic agent with the highest anesthetic depth. Conclusion: Based on the onset, duration of action, and depth of anesthesia, betel leaf, and clove leaf have potential as topical anesthetic agents.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Oral health plays an important role in overall health and quality of life among the elderly. The presence of soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity, particularly in this vulnerable population, warrants attention due to its potential association with systemic health conditions and overall quality of life. Maintaining a high quality of life is crucial, as it is closely linked to health status, life satisfaction, and overall well-being. This study aimed to examine oral health–related quality of life among the elderly, with particular focus on the presence of pathological soft tissue lesions. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection included demographic information, administration of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire, and comprehensive intraoral examinations to identify pathological lesions. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare quality-of-life scores between elderly individuals with and without pathological lesions. Results: Among the 94 subjects examined, 36 were found to have pathological lesions, while none of the 58 (p=0.024, p<0.05) showed a difference in the quality of life between elderly individuals with and without pathological lesions. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in oral health–related quality of life among the elderly, which is influenced by the presence of pathological soft tissue lesions.
