Abstract

As the air flow reaches the rear part of the vehicle the flow will undergo separation generated by friction and fluid viscosity, and creating wake, considerably large turbulent area with low pressure at the rear of the vehicle which results in pressure drag which can reduce vehicle performance. The research was carried out with a computational and experimental approach. The test model used in this study is a model of a family van model which is a modification of the Ahmed body model. The rear part of the vehicle model is equipped with an active control feature in the form of a suction with a slant angle (α) of 35°. The upstream speed and suction speed are 11.1 m/s and 0.5 m/s, respectively. The results obtained indicate that the application of active suction control is able to reduce wake formation and delay flow separation compared to the uncontrolled model, and is able to increase the minimum pressure coefficient on the rear wall of the vehicle model with an increase of 41.49%, and is able to reduce the drag coefficient by 11.0260% for the approach. computation and 11.0080% for the experimental approach.

Abstract

Automobile aerodynamic studies are typically undertaken to improve safety and increase fuel efficiency as well as to find new innovation in automobile technology to deal with the problem of energy crisis and global warming. Some car companies have the objective to develop control solutions that enable to reduce the aerodynamic drag of vehicle and significant modification progress is still possible by reducing the mass, rolling friction or aerodynamic drag. Some flow control method provides the possibility to modify the flow separation to reduce the development of the swirling structures around the vehicle. In this study, a family van is modeled with a modified form of Ahmed's body by changing the orientation of the flow from its original form (modified/reversed Ahmed body). This model is equipped with a suction on the rear side to comprehensively examine the pressure field modifications that occur. The investigation combines computational and experimental work. Computational approach used a commercial software with standard kepsilon flow turbulence model, and the objectives was to determine the characteristics of the flow field and aerodynamic drag reduction that occurred in the test model. Experimental approach used load cell in order to validate the aerodynamic drag reduction obtained by computational approach. The results show that the application of a suction in the rear part of the van model give the effect of reducing the wake and the vortex formation. Futhermore, aerodynamic drag reduction close to 13.86% for the computational approach and 16.32% for the experimental have been obtained.

Abstract

The process of recycling plastic waste is one way of processing plastic waste. Plastic waste in the form of plastic bottles and cups has a high selling value when it is recycled. The Paraikatte Rong waste bank in Makassar City has been in the plastic waste processing business for 5 years. This waste bank only collects and sorts plastic waste due to the unavailability of plastic chopping machines that can help the plastic waste recycling process. Therefore, the Community Service Team of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, with the implementation of appropriate technology designed and built a plastic chopping machine for the Paraikatte Rong waste bank. The method used is to conduct training on the use and maintenance of a plastic chopping machine. The purpose of this service is for the waste bank to carry out the recycling process optimally and efficiently so as to increase the economic value of plastic waste. The scissor system for chopping plastic is applied to the chopping machine so that the chopping results are smoother. The chopping machine consists of 3 dynamic blades and 2 static blades which can be adjusted to the density of the blades. This machine has a capacity of 100 kg/hour using a 7.5 hp petrol engine. The success of this community service activity can be seen from the increase in public understanding based on survey results where the total level of understanding/very understanding of the benefits of selecting plastic waste has increased from 35% to 52.6%. The operation of the plastic chopping machine has increased from 55% to 80%. The maintenance of the plastic chopping machine has increased from 53% to 87%.

Abstract

Public services are interactions between society and the government as public servants. This service activity involved the Pinrang Regency Investment and Integrated Service Agency (DPMPTS) and academics from the Mechanical Department, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University. Utilizing this disinfectant tool can help the DPMPTS service in terms of air sterilization and preventing the spread of Covid-19 in community service spaces. The problem that arises is the level of interaction between the community who needs services and DPMPTS employees as service providers who are quite vulnerable to the spread of viruses and bacteria. This can cause the spread of disease, so tools are needed that can reduce the impact of the spread of the disease. The use of Ultraviolet C (UVC) is a disinfectant tool that has been proven effective in killing microorganisms, one of which is the COVID-19 virus. The service method is carried out using an outreach mechanism at the DPMPTS agency which is attended by technical government agencies and several participating local communities. The process of implementing socialization uses a questionnaire mechanism consisting of pre-test and post-test. At the start of the socialization, the number of respondents who filled out the questionnaire was 18 people consisting of 8 government representatives and 10 community representatives or a total of 18 respondents. In the pre-test results, it was found that only 3 people understood the function of the mobile robot disinfectant system mechanism and 15 people did not understand. After the socialization was carried out, better results were obtained with 17 people who understood and 1 person who still did not understand the working system of the mobile disinfectant robot. Therefore, it is recommended to use mobile disinfectant robots in DPMPTS public service spaces to reduce the effects of spreading viruses and bacteria.

Abstract

The Maros-Barru railway is a strategic route to be developed as a public transportation mode that can connect two important areas in the province of South Sulawesi. However, even though the railway infrastructure in this area already exists, the level of train use by the community is still quite low. The demand for this travel need is significant for planning purposes, both facilities and infrastructure, especially transportation. The lack of public interest in trains on the Maros-Barru route is caused by several factors, one of which is the lack of information received by the community regarding the benefits and comfort offered by trains. Socialization of the benefits of rail-based public transportation will be carried out through various communication channels to reach more passengers, and it is hoped that this activity will benefit policymakers in the management and planning of trains in Sulawesi and reduce transportation problems. Before the socialization, there was no value, but after the socialization, a value of 2984 was obtained, which was in the range of 2501-3250, with the criteria Good. This means that this activity is also expected to be a preference for public transportation modes, especially trains, and the transition from other transportation modes to trains.
