Abstract

Terdapat beberapa guru di sekolah SMKS 1 PGRI Balaraja khususnya bidang studi bahasa Inggris yang belum pernah pernah mendapatkan materi, informasi, dan sosialisasi tentang tata cara pembuatan modul berbasis multibahasa atau lebih dikenal dengan istilah translanguaging di kelas yang mereka ajar. Selain itu sebagian dari mereka belum mengenal dengan baik tentang tata cara praktik pembuatan modul ajar bermodelkan ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implementation and Evaluate). Tujuan utama dari pelatihan ini adalah untuk membekali para peserta dalam hal pembuatan modul ajar berbasi multibahasa dengan model ADDIE . Metode yang akan diterapkan dalam pelaksanaan PKM ini adalah dengan menerapkan metode sosialisasi, tanya jawab, diskusi, dan praktik/unjuk kerja. Setelah itu dilakukan pemaparan oleh perwakilan peserta atas hasil pembuatan modul berbasis translanguaging model ADDIE tersebut. Melalui kegiatan presentasi, pembuatan modul akan divalidasi oleh tim pelaksana dengan memberi masukan dan penguatan atas modul ajar yang telah dihasilkan. Hasilnya para guru memahami tentang prinsip pembuatan modul berbasis translanguaging dengan pendekatan ADDIE, memahami langkah-langkah teknis pembuatan modul berbasis translanguaging dengan konteks lokal yang adaptif dan komunikatif, terampil membuat modul berbasis translanguaging serta mampu menghasilkan produk modul berbasis translanguaging yang adaptif, berbasis kontekstual secara mandiri.

Abstract

This comprehensive study delves into the character progression of Harry Potter, the protagonist of J.K. Rowling’s renowned series, through the lens of Erikson’s fourth stage of psychosocial development - Industry vs. Inferiority. The primary objectives are to discern the character personality that Harry Potter embodies and to elucidate how this pivotal stage of Erikson’s theory is manifested in the narrative. The writers employed a qualitative research methodology. This study offers a comprehensive portrayal of an event or incident that is directly pertinent to the research focus, providing a precise and unbiased depiction of it. An objective and intrinsic technique is used to assess the primary character. The research underscores the profound impact of external influences on Harry’s journey towards industry, overcoming feelings of inferiority, and ultimately, fostering a robust sense of self. Harry Potter effectively completes the fourth stage, which leads to a healthy personality, by establishing a sense of pride in his work and accomplishment. The findings show that Harry Potter, as the main character, is currently experiencing the fourth phase of Erikson's psychological development. Harry Potter is a heroic protagonist who effectively accomplishes his purpose and demonstrates bravery. Harry Potter is currently in the fourth stage of Erikson's psychosocial development, known as the stage of school-age children. The findings offer valuable insights into the intricate interplay between literature and psychology, shedding light on the nuanced character development in the Harry Potter series.

Abstract

This research explores the use of politeness strategies in the 2020 U.S. Presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The study aims to analyze how each candidate utilized these strategies to navigate the debate and influence public perception. By applying qualitative analysis, the research examines debate transcripts through the lens of Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, while also considering non-verbal cues using McNeill's coding scheme. The results show that Trump frequently employed direct and often confrontational bald-on-record strategies, whereas Biden leaned towards positive politeness, seeking to build a sense of connection with the audience. These findings provide valuable insights into the role of politeness strategies in political communication, highlighting their impact on the dynamics of public discourse.

Abstract

Bridging Worlds with Words: Translanguaging Space as A Transformation of Specific–Cultural Construct. Objectives: Translanguaging practices in multilingual contexts have emerged as a dynamic framework for understanding how learners utilize their linguistic repertoires to construct meaning and negotiate cultural identities. This study investigates the role of translanguaging spaces in shaping identity construction within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom in Indonesia. The research explores how learners creatively and critically engage with their linguistic resources, leveraging translanguaging practices to express themselves, reform specific-cultural constructs, and navigate multilingual environments. Methods: The study employs a qualitative approach, focusing on narratives of identity construction through classroom performances. Methods include observations, interviews, and analysis of multimodal compositions created by multilingual EFL learners. Findings: It reveals that translanguaging fosters deeper engagement in meaning-making processes by enabling learners to draw on their sociocultural resources and linguistic repertoires. It highlights how translanguaging spaces facilitate the projection and negotiation of cultural identities, allowing learners to occupy social spaces that reflect their unique experiences. Conclusion: Conclusions emphasize the transformative potential of translanguaging practices in EFL education, demonstrating how they empower learners to reconstruct cultural identities while enhancing cognitive and linguistic flexibility. The research highlights the importance for pedagogical approaches that embrace translanguaging as a tool for fostering inclusivity, creativity, and critical thinking in multilingual classrooms. Keywords: cultural identity construct, EFL learners, translanguaging space, multilingual.

Abstract

Beyond Language Barriers: How Translanguaging Shapes Pedagogical Practice and Students’ Identity In Japanese Higher Education. Objective: This research addresses the critical challenge international students face in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) environments regarding the construction of conceptual knowledge and academic access. Drawing upon Social Constructivism, this study reframes translanguaging not as a linguistic deficit but as a pedagogical resource that supports student agency. The primary aim is to investigate the perceptions and functions of translanguaging among Indonesian undergraduate students in Tokyo, Japan, and to explore its connection to effective meaning-making and academic integration within a superdiverse educational context. Methods: This research employs a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, which is well-suited to capturing students’ lived experiences and providing in-depth insights into how they scaffold conceptual understanding and negotiate collaborative tasks. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured, one-to-one online interviews with three Indonesian undergraduate participants, focusing specifically on their use of multiple languages during academic work and social integration processes within the university. Findings: The findings reveal that all three participants actively utilize translanguaging mixing Indonesian, Japanese, and English as a cognitive scaffolding mechanism to secure conceptual clarity and achieve epistemic access to complex disciplinary knowledge. Crucially, translanguaging functions as a pedagogical tool that enables effective collaborative meaning-making and the negotiation of academic consensus during group work. Furthermore, the practice is closely linked to greater academic confidence and the successful negotiation of their identity within the institutional environment. Conclusion: This study particularly contributes by indicating that translanguaging is a vital tool for learning that ensures academic opportunity and success in superdiverse higher education environments. It goes beyond negotiating identity to state that schools ought to officially recognize and include translanguaging practices in their curriculum and student support services. This is very important for making an environment that is genuinely welcoming to all students and helps them succeed, as well as recognizing their full linguistic and intellectual potential. Keywords: translanguaging pedagogy, english medium instruction, identity, academic equity.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategic deployment of illocutionary speech acts in President Joe Biden's address commemorating the first anniversary of the COVID-19 shutdown. Through a qualitative pragmatic analysis, we examine how presidential rhetoric functions during national crises to inform, reassure, and mobilize public response. The research categorizes utterances from Biden's speech according to Searle's (1969) taxonomy of illocutionary acts: assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declaratives. Analysis of the official transcript from the White House website reveals a strategic distribution of speech acts with assertives dominating the discourse, followed by commissives and expressives, directives, and declaratives. This distribution reflects Biden's rhetorical priorities: establishing factual authority through assertives, building trust through balanced commitment (commissives) and emotional connection (expressives), while carefully limiting authoritative commands (directives) and institutional pronouncements (declaratives). The findings demonstrate how presidential crisis communication strategically balances informational transparency with emotional resonance to foster public compliance and national unity. This study contributes to our understanding of political pragmatics by illuminating how speech act distribution serves as a deliberate rhetorical strategy in pandemic discourse, with implications for crisis communication theory and political speech writing practice. Future research should consider analyzing illocutionary acts in a broader range of political speeches across different contexts and cultures to better understand how public figures use language to influence public perception and policy support.

Abstract

This study aims to showcase the personality disorder of a single character in “A Simple Favor” movie. Applying a qualitative method, the researchers employ a descriptive qualitative method to examine the characteristic type of the main character’s sociopathic personality disorder. The findings reveal that the main character named Emily Nelson exhibits a complicated sociopathic personality disorder defined by three interconnected dimensions: narcissistic, amoral, and aggressive characteristics traits of a sociopath. Emily's narcissism is shown by her arrogance, entitlement, and deceptive behavior. Her amoral behavior indicates a serious absence of guilt for her detrimental deeds. The latter sociopathic characteristic she displays is aggressiveness. Emily’s aggression is purely utilitarian and expressive. The study highlights the utility of psychological frameworks in analyzing fictional characters, enriching literary and film criticism by providing deeper insight into character motivation and complexity. The recommendation include analyzing a broader range of characters across different films or literary works to identify common patterns and unique features in the depiction of sociopathy. Besides that, comparative studies would enhance understanding of how antisocial personality disorder is represented in popular culture. The study exclusively analyzes the character Emily Nelson from “A Simple Favor” movie, focusing on her sociopathic traits as depicted in a fictional narrative. This limits the generalizability of findings to real-life cases of sociopathy or antisocial personality disorder, as film characters are constructed for dramatic effect and may not fully align with clinical realities
