Abstract

Abstract

Stand structure will affect fuel characteristics in forest stands. Forest fuel characteristics have an important role in determining fire behavior in forest fires. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of vegetation stand structure on the abundance and moisture content of fuels that affect the chances of forest fires in the Cilegon PLTGU conservation area. Vegetation analysis and measurement of fuel characteristics were conducted in two different stands, namely monoculture and polyculture stand. The parameters used to conduct vegetation analysis are tree height, first branch height, Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) and crown cover, while the parameters of fuel characteristics are abundance, thickness and moisture content of fuel. Based on the results of fuel characteristics research in monoculture stands resulted in abundance, thickness and moisture content of fuel respectively 11.35 tons/ha, 15 cm and 13,61%, while in polyculture stands resulted in abundance, thickness, and moisture content of fuel respectively 14.57 tons/ha, 10 cm and 16,46%. The moisture content in monoculture and polyculture stands is below the percentage value of 30% so that the two stands in the Cilegon PLTGU conservation area include areas that are still prone to forest fires. Abstract

Peatlands are lands rich in organic carbon. Therefore, dried peat soil becomes fuel when ignited. This research aims to identify and describe the causes, efforts to control forest and land fires, and land utilization by the community in Pematang Rahim Village, Jambi Province. This research uses a qualitative approach with methods of data collection through interviews, observations, and archival studies. Respondent selection is done using snowball sampling method. Data analysis is carried out descriptively qualitatively. The results indicate that the causes of land fires in Pematang Rahim Village are due to land clearing and human negligence. Fire mitigation efforts include patrols, socialization, the establishment of the Masyarakat Peduli Api (MPA), and the creation of fire prohibition sign. Fire suppression is carried out directly using fire extinguishing tools and helicopters. Land utilization in Pematang Rahim Village includes oil palm plantations, betel nut gardens, beekeeping, and swiftlet farming. Keywords: land fire, land utilization, MPA, peat

Abstract

Prescribed burning was well done in Acacia mangium plantation without any trees damaged or dead and no natural regeneration found in the forest floor after fire. Fuel load 3 ton/ha and fuel bed depth 8 cm can be used as a standard for it. Flame temperature reached from 149 °C and 170 °C, and flame length 0.74-0.93 m can safe the plantation for any damage. Three months after burning there was an accumulation of fuel load in the forest floor, therefore 3 months interval is a good solution in preventing the forest from fire invasion.

Abstract

South Sumatra Province has characteristics that significantly increase hotspots and produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in strong El Niño phenomena. This study investigates the impact of forest fires on GHG emissions during extreme climate in the South Sumatra Province from 2010 to 2020. This research analyzes the effects of La Niña and El Niño on the region by analyzing factors such as precipitation patterns, temperature fluctuations, hotspots, and greenhouse gas emissions. This study indicates that forest fires mostly happen during the dry season (May to October). El Niño occurred for the second time in 2015-2016 and 2018-2019, which affected the highest fire (hotspots, HSs) during the strong El Niño. Meanwhile, La Niña occurred three times in 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2017-2018, which is related to the low HSs found and represents the highest annual rainfall in the last ten years. The highest forest fire (HSs = 17.559) occurs in the characteristics of A1-B4 (precipitation 0-100, SSTA > 0.5°C). The highest GHG emission (>400 Mton) occurred in 2015 when the strong El Niño occurred in South Sumatra Province. The strong and weak El Niño produces the highest GHG emissions of more than 30 megatons per day, while the maximum mean daily GHG emission is under 10 megatons per day. Hotspot numbers rise exponentially with increasing SSTA, showing strong statistical relationships (R² > 0.80, r > 0.79) with burned area (R² = 0.90, r = 0.92) and burned area with CO₂ emissions (R² = 0.77, r = 0.79).

Abstract

Abstract. Remote sensing is composed of many interrelated processes to be able to consider physical objects such as buildings, land, and plants which are objects that can be discussed by applications discussed in various disciplines that discuss geology, forestry, soil science, and geography. The use of GIS and remote sensing for fire monitoring has been widely used. However, this study is the first study conducted in the TNBS area after the Berbak National Park (TNB) in Jambi to join the Sembilang National Park (TNS) in South Sumatra. Hotspot distribution in this study was obtained using Getis-Ord-Gi * statistics, hotspot data collected from 2000-2018 in the TNBS area. The results of the hotspot distribution during the 2000-2018 recorded by MODIS satellites with time acquisition and statistical analysis using Gi* show the results that the hotspots gathered (80% confidence level) outside the TNBS area, which is a mixed fields area. Further studies on causes of fire in terms of socio-economic and cultural needs to be done to get the right advice in reducing the risk of loss of forest cover and diversity in TNBS.
