Abstract

The objectives of the study to find out the types of English slang words used and strategies in translating slang words from English to Bahasa uttered in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie. The data were collected using the theory of Partridge and Bloomfield, and theories of translation strategies by Mona Baker. The result showed that there were 61 slang words were found in this movie. They were classified into 7 types of slang words namely cockney slang, public house slang, workmen’s slang, slang in theater, slang in art, slang in public school and university, and society slang. Society slang is the utmost type of slang used in the movie and other pop cultures. The translation strategies used were translation by more general word, translation by more neutral/ less expressive, translation by paraphrase using the related word, paraphrase using the unrelated word, translation using loan word, cultural substitution, translation by omission, and translation by illustration. In conclusion, the researcher mostly used translation strategy named translation by a more general word in this research which has been determined by analyzing each source of data.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to determine the types of taboo words, the functions of taboo words, and in what context taboo words are uttered by the characters in the TV series. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were 8 videos from the first season of Sex Education TV series and their transcripts. In analyzing the data, the theory of Wardhaugh (2014) was used to describe types and functions of taboo words and the theory of Fromkin (2005) to describe in what context taboo words are uttered in the TV series. The results of this research show that there are data of taboo words which are categorized into seven types; they are sex term, death, excretion, bodily function, religious matter, mother-in-law, and the left hand. The findings suggest that the characters use taboo words mostly to draw attention and to show contempt.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the students' preferences on online learning systems in the new normal period of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used descriptive qualitative research and adopted a survey method to collect the quantitative data from 95 students in two universities related to students experiences on learning classes, devices and mediums, learning environment, material format and comprehension, resources, time management, peers and lecturer communication, and limitation and benefit of online learning. This study also highlights the lecturer's effort to overcome the general obstacles amid the online learning process. The use of various formats of learning materials is effective for students who face poor internet access in remote areas. Moreover, feedback is vital for both lecturer and students in maintaining the engagement of communication. Finally, the results of this study provide essential information in understanding the effectiveness of online learning particularly amid the new normal period from the university setting.

Abstract

The objectives of this project are to describe the intralingual translation techniques used in translating the original novel David Copperfield into a simplified version and to find out the reasons why the translator made a simplified version of the original novel David Copperfield written by Charles Dickens. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by reading the novel, comparing the original and simplified texts of David Copperfield, identifying, classifying, counting, and concluding the results. The theory of Jakobson was used to analyze the data related to intralingual translation techniques. The results of the study showed that from the total data (20 texts from the original novel David Copperfield and 20 texts from the simplified version), the paraphrasing technique was used 6 times and the summarizing technique was used 14 times. Besides, the most dominant intralingual translation technique used by the translator is the summarizing technique. The reasons why the translator used paraphrasing and summarizing techniques in making the intralingual translation of the original novel into a simplified version were also found. Firstly, the original novel consists of 750 pages, which are easier to read by making the summary of the novel into 238 pages using the summarizing technique. Secondly, the original novel consists of many difficult words, which can hinder the comprehension of the reader whereas in the simplified version the novel was paraphrased by using the paraphrasing technique.

Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the shift of themes and rhemes in The Translation of English Political Text into Indonesian. In this research, descriptive qualitative design is applied by the researcher in order to answer the questions. The data were taken from English and Indonesia political news texts of Waspada. The technique used was interactive model by Miles,  Huberman and Saldana (2014). This study found some enrichment with variation of theme and information structure of thematic and rhematic in English – Indonesia Waspada political texts. Based on analyzing data, the findings of this study are formulated : (1) There are some ways in which shifts applied in the thematic and rhematic in English - Indonesian translation of Waspada political texts there are such as : the SL which is differently translated into TL considering the grammatical pattern of both language and the unit of word constructing the theme and rheme and (2) There are some reasons for applying shifts in the thematic and rhematic shift in English – Indonesian translation of Waspada political texts such as different language system and grammatical structure from both English and Indonesia. Keywords: Translation Shifts, Theme, Rheme, Political, Text

Abstract

Abstract. This study is about the translation of idiomatic expressions in the Karonese cultural legend “Pustaka Sembiring” into English. An idiomatic expression is a combination of words that form figurative meanings, cannot be interpreted from the literal meaning of its forming words , and the meaning is bound to the context, so transferring meaning between two different cultures becomes a challenge for translators in implementing appropriate translation strategies. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the research data was a legend entitled "Pustaka Sembiring", a Karo-language text contained in the book “Himpunan Buku Legenda Karo" pages 171-176 published by Dinas Pariwisata, Seni dan Budaya Kabupaten Karo (the Karo District Tourism, Arts and Culture Office) in 2007, and the translation into English translated by Sehati Mitha Sembiring. The purpose of this study was to identify translation strategies applied in translating the idiomatic expressions in the source text into English. Through data collection and discourse analysis, 56 idiomatic idiom were found and then identified based on Baker's (1992) strategies in translating idiomatic expressions. The results showed that the translator used three of four Baker’s strategies, namely: 1) Paraphrase (39 or 69.7%) as the most frequently applied strategy, 2) Using Similar Idioms, Different Forms (8 or 14.3%), 3) Using Similar Idioms, Similar Forms (1 or 1.8%). Omission strategy was not found. In addition, there was another translation strategy labeled as Literal Translation (8 or 14.3%) found.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of modality used in Greta Thunberg’s speech and to reveal the meaning of the realizations. This research used a descriptive qualitative method by applying theory of modality by Halliday and Matthiessen. The data source of this research is Greta Thunberg’s speech at the National Assembly in Paris regarding climate crisis issue. The data of this research were all kinds of modality that were found in Greta Thunberg’s speech. The result showed that there were two types of modalization found consisting of probability and usuality and two types of modulation consisting of obligation and inclination. Based on the data, there were 51 cases of modality in 40 clauses in the speech found. There were 27 (52.9%) modalizations found. It shows that the speaker is more inclined to convey statement form of information to inspire the listener. Also, there were 24 (47.1%) modulations found. It shows that the speaker asks the listener to do something. From the speech of Greta Thunberg, it can be concluded that the speaker used the type of modalization more. It means that the speaker is more inclined to raise thought to inspire than command to the listener.

Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the types and functions of figures of speech   in The New York Times selected headlines under the issue of Donald Trump and Joe Biden 1st Presidential Debating 2020. The study of Stylistic is employed since this research investigates language and style which can be seen in figurative language through figures of speech in the objects of study. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are taken from The New York Times official website. The data are the sentences referring to figures of speech. Inductive analysis method is used in the analysis of the data, then triangulation is used to establish the reliability of the data, so that it can enhance trustworthiness. The research results show six of twelve types of figures of speech are found based on Perrine’s theory, i.e. metaphor, simile, personification, symbol, paradox and overstatement/hyperbole. Each type of figure of speech has its particular function or functions. However, there are only two of four functions of figures of speech found based on Perrine’s theory, i.e. to add emotional intensity and to say much in a brief compass. Metaphor, simile, and overstatement/hyperbole carry both functions, adding emotional intensity to the readers and saying much in a brief compass.

Abstract

This study aims to depict the types of errors made by Instagram Machine Translation and to find out the most dominant types of lexical errors made by Instagram Machine Translation on ‘CNN Indonesia’ Instagram account. The design of this research was qualitative design. The data were in words, phrases, and sentences that contained lexical errors made by Instagram Machine Translation on the “CNNIndonesia” Instagram account. The data were taken by running an Instagram in one account of various captions related to the lexical errors of the study object. The data were collected through stages: finding out and determining, classifying, and separating the words, phrases, and sentences that contained lexical errors made Instagram Machine Translation on the “CNN Indonesia” Instagram account. The techniques of analysis data researcher translated the captions using Instagram machine translation and then the translation result is compared to the source language. The next step is to examine the lexical errors produced by Instagram machine translation. The research result shows that the types of lexical errors made by Instagram Machine Translation on the “CNN Indonesia” Instagram account based on the error categories theory by Vilar et al founds are: 4 missing errors, 10 incorrect words, and 8 unknown words. All errors indicated that Instagram machine translation could not represent the target language in the “CNN Indonesia” Instagram account. The users of Instagram need to filter every translation that is translated by Instagram machine translation before receiving it as information.

Abstract

This research was concerned with social consecutive interpreting; its objetive was to analyze and find out the mastery in knowledge of two interpreters who played their role in two different religious activities. The first religious activities led by an American Evangelist, namely John Hartman; and the other activities led by the Israeli Evangelist, namely Ps. Benny Hinn. Both the Interpreters observed in this research are Indonesian and work as an Evangelist. The data in this research were collected by using questionnaire and conducting interviews and processed by using Likert scale calculation and analyzed by using descriptive quaitative method, based on the theory of interpreting competency in order to find out their mastery in knowledge to determine their competency in interpreting. The questionnaire then given to three raters who are Indonesian and really experienced in doing Interpreting in religious setting. The result of this research are: (i) both Interpreters mastered in both source and target language (namely English and Indonesia), as well as in both cultures; (ii) although they do not work as an Interpreter, both of them are succeed in transferring the message and making the audiences understand about the preaching.
