Abstract

Environmental issues are increasing as human activities damage ecosystems and trigger climate change. This increasing pressure has led to a concentration on development that is not only economically and socially but also environmentally oriented. In line with the spirit of the WCED in 1987, this study aims to assess the direct and spillover impacts of development performance on environmental quality in Sumatra Island. Observations from 2015 to 2022. The data used is panel data derived from the Indonesian government authorities. The research method uses a spatial autoregressive model with one nearest neighbor weighting. Previously, a cross-section dependence test was conducted to ensure the presence of spatial effects in the model. The result showed that increasing the proportion of highly educated workers will improve environmental quality in the observation province and improve the environment in the nearest neighboring province. Democracy also has strong positive direct and spillover effects. An increase in the dependency burden of workers will improve environmental quality in the observation province, with weak spillover effects. Conversely, an increase in real GRDP per capita decreases environmental quality and affects environmental quality in neighboring regions. Four determinants have a strong total effect. Meanwhile, population density and regional expenditure have no significant effect. The implication of this study is the need for intervention from the authorities to change the perspective on economic activity and regional expenditure as a whole so that economic value added does not come at the expense of the environment.

Abstract

The plantation sector, which includes coffee, pepper, rubber and palm oil, has quite good prospects for the lives of farmers. One of the plantation commodities that has relatively high value and can support the Indonesian economy is palm oil. Palm oil is a plantation commodity important for income and employment and a source of foreign exchange because palm oil has high economic value. However, the many job opportunities provided by the agricultural sector are a challenge among the community due to the low level of education and knowledge about technology, which is still taboo, causing people in Huristak District to become agricultural laborers on oil palm farming land with a low level of productivity. This research aims to determine the factors of experience, education, skills, income, palm oil prices, production, labor and productivity relevant to improving community welfare in Huristak District, Padang Lawas Regency. Data processing uses Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Multiple Linear Regression. The results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) test in the KMO and Bartlett's test tables show that the factors of palm oil price, experience, income and skills significantly affect the community's welfare in Huristak District. In contrast, education, production, labor and productivity have a negative or insignificant effect on welfare. The people of Huristak District. The results of multiple linear regression testing show that simultaneous hypothesis testing of palm oil prices, experience, income and skills together have a positive and significant effect on the welfare of the people of Huristak District. Keywords:  Prices, Experience, Income, Skills and Welfare.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is vital in most developing countries' economies, especially Indonesia. Economic development is carried out to improve community welfare. Improving farmers' welfare is one of the visions and missions of agricultural development in achieving food self-sufficiency and improving farmers' welfare. Deli Serdang Regency is one area with an excellent agrarian sector, especially rice farming. Even though the rice farming sector is still the primary sector in the economy of Deli Serdang Regency, there are still problems related to farmer welfare. Some issues include fluctuating grain prices and rice production, which must still be optimal. Besides that, climate change and a need for more understanding regarding the technical matters of managing rice plants and equipment must be improved, impacting rice farmers' productivity. This research aims to determine the factors of rice production, grain prices, capital, Labor, consumption, land area, technology, and education relevant to improving rice farmers' welfare in Perbaungan District, Deli Serdang Regency. Data processing uses Multiple Linear Regression. Based on test results. The results of multiple linear regression testing show that simultaneous hypothesis testing of capital, land area, grain prices, and Labor together have a positive and significant effect on the welfare of farmers in the Perbaungan District. Keywords:  Capital, Land Area, Labor, and Farmers' Welfare

Abstract

The high population is not a reason, as a factor causing the increased burden on the government to provide subsidies in various formal and non-formal sectors. Still, the high population can be used as an opportunity for the government to carry out various positive economic activities, such as increasing the standard of living. Community life through growing training for productive workers in the field of entrepreneurship, training to become an entrepreneur both in cities and in rural areas, so, in this case, we support government activities to continue to race to improve the standard of living of the community which in the end can increase per capita income. The Medan Labuhan community has activities in the coastal area that are the center of their economic activities. One unique reason we focused our research on this sub-district is that according to statistical data for the city of Medan, the productive age in this sub-district is very high, above 60% of the total population of Medan city. Method The research used is the population; in this research, people of productive age live in the Medan Labuhan sub-district. The sampling technique used is nonprobability sampling, namely a sampling technique where not all members/elements of the population have the same chance of being sampled. The sampling location itself was the Medan Labuhan District location. Keywords:  Population, Productive Age, Population, Labor

Abstract

In an effort to understand the interactions between economic growth, population density, the Human Development Index (HDI), and the Environmental Quality Index (EQI) in Indonesia, this study adopts a quantitative approach utilizing panel data encompassing 34 provinces during the period from 2020 to 2022. This analysis implements fixed effects models in panel data regression to isolate the impact of these variables on environmental quality. Results indicate that neither economic growth nor population density significantly affect the EQI, while an increase in HDI significantly contributes to environmental improvement, emphasizing the importance of factors such as education, health, and living standards. Furthermore, the cross-section fixed effects analysis reveals significant provincial-specific factors influencing the EQI, which macroeconomic and demographic variables cannot fully explain. Variability among provinces shows that some have a strong positive effect on the EQI, whereas others have a negative impact, highlighting the need for regionally tailored policies to enhance effectiveness in environmental conservation efforts. These findings inform policymakers about the importance of focusing on human development as a key element in strategies to improve environmental quality in Indonesia. The implications suggest that sustainable development strategies must integrate aspects of human development with comprehensive environmental policies, creating synergies that support environmental preservation. This study makes a significant contribution to the literature by providing insights into effective ways that Indonesia can adopt to address current and future environmental challenges.

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of gender equality on per capita income in the Sumatra region using a panel data approach with the Random Effects Model (REM) estimation method. The model yielded a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.73825. In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender equality is considered a key element in promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth. This study utilizes panel data from 2018 to 2023, covering seven main indicators: the Human Development Index (HDI), the Gender Development Index (GDI), the Gender Inequality Index (GII), the ratio of average years of schooling between males and females (RLS), the ratio of the productive age population between males and females (RUP), the ratio of labor force participation rate between males and females (RTPAK), and women's representation in parliament (PP). The analysis results indicate that the Human Development Index and the ratio of average years of schooling between males and females have a positive and significant effect on per capita income in the Sumatra region.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the impact of corruption and shadow economy on the economy and sustainable development in developing countries in the ASEAN region. Corruption and shadow economy are two interrelated phenomena that have serious implications for governance, resource allocation efficiency, and the achievement of long-term development goals. This research uses a quantitative approach with the Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Panel ARDL) method to identify short-term and long-term effects among variables. The variables used include corruption perception index (CPI), size of the shadow economy (SE), Gross Domestic Product per capita (GDP per capita), and Sustainable Development Index (SDG Index). The data used are secondary data obtained from various official institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Sustainable Development Report (SDR). The research results show that in the short term, neither corruption nor the shadow economy has a significant effect on GDP per capita or the SDG Index. However, in the long term, the shadow economy has a negative and significant effect on GDP per capita and the SDG Index. Meanwhile, corruption (CPI) also has a negative and significant effect on GDP per capita, but shows a positive and significant effect on the SDG Index. These findings show the complexity of the correlation among variables and the need for integrated policies that look upon the interaction between corruption and shadow economy in an effort to improve economic performance and achieve sustainable development in ASEAN developing countries.

Abstract

The aim of development in a country or region is to improve the welfare and prosperity of society in a fair and equitable manner, one of which is by increasing sustainable economic growth. The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect of domestic investment, foreign investment, population, crime and unemployment on economic growth in Deli Serdang Regency. The data analysis method used is the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach in the time series data model and the observation time span of this study starts from 2010 to 2021 where data interpolation will be carried out in quarterly. According to the results of the analysis, the variables domestic investment and foreign direct investment have a positive significant effect on economic growth. Meanwhile, the variables of population, crime and unemployment have a negative significant impact on economic growth in the long run. However, in the short run, the variables of direct investment, foreign investment, population and crime have a positive significant impact on economic growth. On the other hand, only the number of unemployed has a negative significant effect on economic growth. Based on the results of this study, it is appropriate for the Government of Deli Serdang Regency to optimize programs that are oriented towards increasing investment both domestic and foreign, suppressing the rate of population growth and the number of unemployed and maintaining regional security in the Deli Serdang Regency area.
