Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia today faces many misuse in its daily usage. The language disorder appears on many aspects on language usage, such as excessive and misguided use of foreign languages, violation of the rules of Bahasa Indonesia in media and in public places, the inclusion of regional language structure, use of acronyms arbitrarily, the emergence of slank language and so on. Regarding the language disorder, there is a strong need of revitalization of Bahasa Indonesia in linguistic context. Revitalization means re-positioning Indonesian on its right place and return its existing language rules. Revitalization of Indonesian is expected to overcome language misuse, expected to reduce the chaos or even eliminate them. Using Bahasa Indonesia correctly and appropriately means modelling the right stance to the only official language in this country.

Abstract

Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa strategi kesantunan berbahasa diaspora orang Bali di Jawa Timur mencakup  strategi bald on record,  on record positive politeness, on record negative politeness. Kata kunci: diaspora orang Bali, Jawa Timur, strategi kesantunan, status sosial AbstractThe presence of Balinese diaspora in East Java spreads in all districts and cities. Abstract

This paper investigates the adaptation of Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language semantically. The data were taken from Kamus Basar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) fifth edition. 1,870 words are listed in the KBBI as Arabic loan words. The definitions of these words were compared with their original Arabic definitions found in Almaany Arabic dictionary (2019) to determine the semantic adaptations. The analysis shows that most of the Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language have retained the same meanings as their originals in the Arabic language. However, there have been semantic adaptations in which eighteen words have been narrowed, nine words have been extended, and seven words have gone through the shifting process. The narrowing was due to absorbing of only one meaning of a word that had many meanings in Arabic ,  borrowing the old meanings of the words that have been extended recently due to the advent of technology, filling any existing gap or borrowing of new words along with cultural concepts. The extending was due to overgeneralizing some Arabic affixes and forms ,leaving one form of a word to represent the meanings of the others or assigning names to things by the way people perceive them by their five senses . The shifting occurred mainly because of borrowing of new words along with cultural concepts, assigning names to things by the way they are perceived by the five senses or overgeneralizing of forms that occurred in Arabic loanwords. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be useful to researchers interested in semantic adaptation of loanwords.

Abstract

A cross-cultural pragmatics exploration, particularly in multicultural and multilingual settings like Indonesia, is important for understanding language used within a cultural framework. In the comparative study, Banjarese and Javanese languages are particularly underrepresented. Thus, the research investigates and compares complaint strategies that the Banjarese and Javanese use. The current study used a qualitative approach and the Discourse Completion Task (DCT), consisting of eight scenarios, to gather the data. The study consists of 50 participants, 25 Banjarese and 25 Javanese participants, ranging in age from 18 to 60 years old. The findings of the study found that Banjarese and Javanese participants utilise mostly the same strategy, namely dissatisfaction (DS) and request for repair (RR), and prefer to avoid conflict with the interlocutors. However, Banjarese participants typically prioritise immediate resolution, whereas Javanese participants prioritise expressing their dissatisfaction first. The research highlights the significant influence that cultural context has on complaint strategies and communication.

Abstract

While several expressive speech acts like requesting, apologizing, and inviting had been widely studied, the speech act of congratulating has been given little attention. This study compared how Javanese and Sundanese speakers congratulate each other, which has not been studied much before. This research also looked at how age, social power, and social distance affect the way people congratulate each other. The contribution of this paper lies in providing a nuanced understanding of how cultural and social values in Javanese and Sundanese societies shape congratulatory speech acts.  The study involved 60 participants who completed a written Discourse Completion Task (DCT). A mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods was used for analysis. The data was coded and categorized using Elwood's (2004) framework. The study identified new strategies, such as mentioning occasion and divine remarks, that were significant in relation to the dataset. Participants responded to five real-life situations by providing congratulatory expressions in their local language on a Google Form. The most frequently utilized strategy is the expression of surprise which is followed by IFID in the second position. The presence of divine remarks in the act of congratulating in this study is attributed with the highly influence of Islamic culture in Indonesia. In terms of social position, social distance, and age, both groups demonstrate a preference for employing High variety (H) when interacting with individuals with higher position or older individuals.
