Abstract

Duck is one type of waterfowl that has a higher nutritional content than chicken. The high nutritional value causes the duck meat to be easily damaged perishable food due to the high water content, the pH value is close to neutral and sufficient food is available for microbes. An alternative effort is needed for natural ingredients that are safe but can inhibit microbial growth in duck meat. One of the natural ingredients that can be used is star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) because it has a high acid content. This study aims to determine the difference in the duration of soaking Magelang duck meat with starfruit juice on the pH value, water holding capacity and water content. The research method was carried out using a completely randomized experimental design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications, and using a 40% concentration of starfruit juice with a soaking time of 0, 20, 40, 60 minutes. The data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance and if different results were obtained, it was continued with the Duncan Multiple Rang Test (DMRT) further test. The results showed that the immersion time for 20-60 minutes can lower the pH value (5,83-4,67) and water content (67,05-63,68%), but had no effect on water holding capacity (48,47-54,63%). It is concluded that the immersion time of 60 minutes with starfruit juice with a concentration of 40% in can be used as a method of preserving Magelang duck breast meat.

Abstract

A study to compare the back fat thickness, rib eye muscle area, and body condition score (BCS) of young thin-tailed lambs fed various levels of carica Dieng seeds in rations. Eighteen male lambs aged 3-4 months with an initial body weight of 10.68 ± 1.30 kg were applied three feeding treatments (T) following a completely randomized design, T1 = complete feed containing 5% carica seeds, T2 = complete feed containing 12.5% carica seeds, and T3 = complete feed containing 20% carica seeds, with six replications each.  At the end of 14 weeks of feeding treatment, back fat thickness and rib eye muscle area were measured using the Digital Veterinary Ultrasound Imaging System CTS-800. Yield grade value was determined using back fat thickness data, while the BCS assessment was carried out visually. The results showed that various levels of carica seeds addition to complete feed did not produce significant differences (P>0.05) in all variables measured. Back fat thickness, BCS, and rib eye muscle area in young thin-tailed sheep were  1.46 mm, 3.06, and 15.52 cm2, respectively. It might be concluded that supplementation of carica Dieng seeds up to 20% in the complete feed can still be utilized by young thin-tailed sheep.

Abstract

The evaluation of Carica seed supplementation in feed was carried out to assess its effect on sheep body composition such as water, fat, and protein, using the urea space method which is one method of determining the body composition of livestock without cutting. The study involved 15 male thin-tailed sheep aged 3 months with an average initial body weight of 10.68±1.28 kg, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments: 5% (T1), 12.5% (T2), and 20% (T3) carica seed supplementation, with five replicates each. The observed parameters included feed intake, daily weight gain, as well as water, fat, and protein content in the body. ANOVA analysis at a 5% significance level revealed that different concentrations of Carica seed significantly affected (P<0.05) crude protein intake, daily weight gain, and body protein composition at week 11. The sheep in the T3 treatment showed the crude protein consumption and daily body weight gain as well as a significant increase in body protein composition compared to the other treatments. Overall, Carica seed supplementation led to a significant increase in body protein content, while having no significant effect on body fat and water composition.

Abstract

The problem of plastic waste in Gandan Hamlet, Pogalan Village, is becoming an increasingly urgent environmental issue that requires sustainable management. Unmanaged waste can pollute the soil, air, and water, and threaten public health. In response to this situation, Tidar University Community Service (KKN) students implemented an innovative community-based waste management program. The main focus of this program is to utilize plastic waste into products with utility and sales value, namely plastic-filled pillows and Eco-Paving Blocks. This activity was carried out through a participatory approach by actively involving the community at every stage, from outreach and education to technical training on the collection, sorting, and processing of plastic waste. The education provided concerns the dangers of plastic waste to the environment and the importance of recycling as an alternative solution. Making pillows from plastic filling was chosen because the process is simple, inexpensive, and can be done by housewives. Meanwhile, Eco-Paving Blocks are the result of utilizing mixed plastic waste as an environmentally friendly and durable building material. This program has succeeded in reducing the volume of plastic waste in the surrounding environment, while raising public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. Furthermore, this activity opens up new economic opportunities for the community by creating creative products from waste. Evaluation results show that the community-based waste management model is effective in fostering community independence in waste processing, creating a cleaner environment, and encouraging a culture of sustainable living at the village level. The success of this program is expected to serve as an example for replication in other areas with similar challenges. Continued support from the village government and cross-sector collaboration are key to this initiative's continued growth and long-term impact.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the chemical composition and anti-nutritional content of Carica Dieng seeds (Carica pubescens) and their in vitro digestibility after boiling. The process of boiling is frequently employed to reduce antinutrient content and increase the digestibility of nutrients. This research used a completely randomized design, consisting of three treatments with boiling durations of 0, 10, and 20 minutes, each repeated six times. The research revealed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the tannin and saponin levels of Carica Dieng seeds following the boiling process. The concentration of carica seed tannin was lowered to a range of 36-48%, while the saponin content decreased by 52-58%. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis was conducted to assess the nutritional and amino acid composition of the seeds after boiling them for a duration of 10 minutes. Lysine (1.57% w/w) dominated the essential amino acids in Carica pubescens seeds, and glutamic acid (3.19% w/w) dominated the non-essential amino acids The digestibility of boiling carica seeds as feed was assessed by including them into complete feed at different proportions: 0% (T0), 5% (T2), 10% (T3), and 15% (T4). This experiment followed a Completely Randomized Design with five replications. The variables included in-vitro dry matter (DMD) and organic (OMD) digestibility. The DMD of carica seeds at a concentration of 0% showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) when compared to the addition of 5% carica seeds. However, there was no significant difference in DMD between adding carica seeds at levels of 10% and 15% in the total meal. The organic material digestibility variable showed that the treatment without carica seeds was not significantly different from adding 10% carica seeds but was substantially different from adding 5 and 15% carica seeds. Carica pubescens seed supplementation of up to 10-15% remains viable for inclusion in whole feed since it does not reduce digestibility.
