Abstract

This study investigates the types and pragmatic functions of deixis in One Direction’s song “Night Changes.”Using a qualitative analysis content method, the research applies Levinson’s (1983) typology of person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis. The data were collected from the official lyrics and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s (1994) model of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. A total of 39 deictic expressions were identified, consisting of person deixis (22 instances), time deixis (8), place deixis (4), discourse deixis (3), and social deixis (2). The findings show that person deixis is the most frequent, highlighting the narrative perspective and interpersonal involvement between the singer and the listener, while social deixis is the least frequent, reflecting the informal tone of the lyrics. This study demonstrates how deixis constructs narrative flow and emotional engagement in pop lyrics, with practical use in EFL classrooms and translation studies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Migration is considered as a massive impact of colonization. It causes a huge number of people from a certain country (a colonized ones) move to another country due to colonization. Starting from this, usually a new society consists of mixed culture, norms, values adjusted to the altering citizens (migrants and non-migrants) that has been created. Yet, an issue of one’s identity appear for those who come from the two cultures as it appeared in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. Jing-Mei Woo, a Chinese-born American had issue of defining her identity due to the hybridity circumstance she achieved as the daughter of immigrant parents. This research aimed to examine the portrayal of Jing-Mei Woo’s hybridity identity and the way she developed her hybrid identity. This research was a qualitative research for the data were in the form of words from The Joy Luck Club novel. Barry’s theory about hybrid identity was used to answer the research questions towards Jing-Mei Woo character. The result showed that Jing-Mei Woo experienced hybridity as she was unable to define herself whether it was her past-self (Chinese) or present-self (American), felt out of place not knowing exactly her identity form of the two cultures, and having the hybrid identity between Chinese and American cultures. While during the process, Jing-Mei Woo developed her hybrid identity by getting through the four stages: she ignored her origin’s identity as a Chinese woman, denying her Chinese identity by telling her mother most of times that she was not a Chinese and that was the reason she could not understand a bit about her mother’s culture, maintaining the American’s way of thinking as she thought that was her identity despite the fact that she was also a Chinese, and finally realising that in order to define herself, she accepted her Chinese blood and admitted her hybrid identity as a Chinese-American woman.

Abstract

This study explored the teaching style of an English teacher at SMP IT Cordova Samarinda using Grasha’s Teaching Style Model (1996), which identifies six types: Expert, Formal Authority, Personal Model, Facilitator, Delegator, and their combinations. The model emphasized how teachers delivered content, interacted with students, and structured the learning environment. A qualitative case study design was applied, focusing on one teacher to gain an in-depth understanding of instructional practices within a real classroom. Following Creswell’s (2013) view, a single case can provide deep insights when purposefully selected. Data collection included classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of instructional documents. The teacher predominantly used Delegator, Facilitator, and Personal Model styles. These approaches promoted student independence, encouraged collaboration, and fostered a more active and competitive learning environment. The study highlighted that such methods helped meet diverse student needs and enhanced engagement. However, challenges were also noted, including the time-consuming nature of these styles and their limited effectiveness for students who relied heavily on direct teacher guidance. While the study's single-participant design limited generalizability, it still offered meaningful insights into the role of teaching style in Indonesian secondary education. The presence of the observer may also have influenced classroom behavior. In conclusion, the findings suggested that professional development programs should focus on varied experiential training to better support junior high school students. The study also recommended further research involving different subjects or educational levels to expand the understanding of effective teaching practices.

Abstract

Language plays a central role in political communication, particularly through the use of metaphor, which enables leaders to simplify complex issues and influence public perception. In the digital era, cinematic metaphors drawn from popular films and television series have become increasingly visible in political discourse. This study examines cinematic metaphors in two of President Joko Widodo’s international speeches delivered in 2018. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the analysis applies Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Critical Metaphor Analysis to identify and interpret metaphors derived from Avengers: Infinity War and Game of Thrones. Fourteen cinematic metaphors were identified and categorized into four conceptual mappings: ECONOMIC CONFLICT IS WAR, LEADERS ARE HEROES, ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY IS NATURAL DISASTER, and INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ARE A GAME OF POWER. The findings show that these metaphors function not only as linguistic devices but also as rhetorical strategies that construct meaning, highlight global risks, and legitimize Jokowi’s call for cooperation. The study concludes that cinematic metaphors enhance accessibility and emotional resonance in political messaging by connecting global issues with familiar cultural narratives. The originality of this research lies in its focus on cinematic metaphors in Indonesian political speech—an area rarely examined in prior studies—and its integration of cognitive and rhetorical perspectives to explain how popular culture shapes contemporary political discourse.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a major challenge for students learning English as a foreign language. It often arises from fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and the pressure of being judged. This study explores how English Education students at Mulawarman University experience and manage speaking anxiety. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews involving three participants, data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in causes, triggers, and coping strategies. The findings reveal that anxiety is most intense during formal tasks such as presentations or spontaneous questioning. Students adopt strategies like self-practice, note preparation, breathing techniques, self-recording, and peer support to reduce anxiety. These approaches gradually enhance confidence and improve speaking performance. The study concludes that emotional and instructional support from teachers and peers significantly reduces anxiety levels. Implications suggest that educators should foster supportive classroom environments and integrate reflective speaking practices to help students overcome fear and participate actively in English communication.
