Abstract

Social media has transformed how sports fans interact, enabling virtual communities that foster strong emotional bonds with their favorite clubs. However, online fan communities face challenges in maintaining content consistency, increasing engagement, and reinforcing collective identity amid growing competition. This study examines how members of the Pena Real Madrid Brebes community use Instagram and explores their motives for following the @madridistaindo_brebes account. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and literature review, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that Instagram serves as the community’s primary communication medium, with content distributed through features such as feeds, Stories, and Reels. These features are optimized to deliver information, entertainment, and interactive content. Members’ motivations align with the uses and gratification framework. Overall, Instagram plays a central role in fulfilling both informational and psychological needs while sthrengthening engagement within the fan community. Furthermore, this study contributes by providing empirical insight into how localized fan communities strategically utilize Instagram features to sustain engagement and reinforce collective identity, while extending the    application of uses and gratifications theory within the context of digital sports fandom.

Abstract

The presence of the Meta Verified feature on Instagram shifts the paradigm of digital authenticity from organic reputation to an economy-based symbol. This study aims to analyze the motivations of students at Gunung Jati University (UGJ), the social meaning, and the social validation obtained through the purchase of blue ticks. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four informants, participant observation of account activities, and a study of documentation sourced from scientific journals and textbooks to strengthen the validity of the findings. The results of the study show that the informants' motivation was driven by the processing of impressions to build visual credibility. From a communication perspective, the active use of the blue tick plays a role in creating self-identity in the digital public sphere. In addition, possession of the verification symbol triggers an increase in digital literacy, whereby users become more careful and selective when managing content. Technical and social validation has been proven to improve students' self-concept as it brings social status recognition. The research conclusion confirms that the blue tick for students is a commodity of prestige that provides symbolic satisfaction and legitimizes their position in both digital and real social stratification.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of public relations in disseminating information about public transportation, using the Trans Cirebon Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as a case study. The background of this study is based on the still-limited dissemination of information regarding BRT routes, schedules, and services, which has resulted in low public interest in using public transportation. This study employs a qualitative approach using the case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and a literature review, with informants selected using purposive sampling. The theoretical framework consists of Dozier and Broom’s Theory of the Role of Public Relations and Cutlip and Center’s Communication Planning Strategy. The results indicate that public relations plays a crucial role in disseminating information through four primary functions: as an expert prescriber, a communication facilitator, a problem-solving process facilitator, and a communication technician. However, the implementation of these roles has not been optimal, particularly regarding the equitable distribution of information to the public. In addition, obstacles were identified, including limited route coverage, limited access to bus stops, and a lack of effective communication strategies. The limited dissemination of information is one of the factors contributing to low public interest, which has led to the suspension of Trans Cirebon BRT operations. Therefore, a more integrated and effective communication strategy is needed to raise awareness and encourage the use of public transportation among the public.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology and social media have transformed how Generation Z interacts, contributing to the emergence of Relationships Without Status, a romantic relationship characterized by emotional intimacy without formal commitment. This study aims to explore the meaning of Relationships Without Status among Generation Z in Cirebon, identify the emotional and social challenges they experience, and examine the influence of the local socio-cultural environment. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed using in-depth interviews with five informants, supported by non-participant observation, documentation, and a literature review. Data were analyzed through transcript coding, data reduction, thematic interpretation, and narrative presentation. The findings indicate that Relationships Without Status provide emotional freedom and opportunities for self-discovery but also generate anxiety, uncertainty, overthinking, and social pressure due to the absence of commitment. In Cirebon, where religious and traditional values remain influential, these relationships reflect a negotiation between modern relationship practices and prevailing social norms, highlighting both emotional flexibility and psychological vulnerability among Generation Z.

Abstract

Conflict in romantic relationships is an inevitable part of interpersonal communication. One common response to conflict in Generation Z romantic relationships is the silent treatment, a form of silence used to express emotions or withdraw from communication. Previous studies have primarily examined the silent treatment from a psychological perspective rather than as nonverbal communication in interpersonal relationships. This study aims to understand the meaning of the silent treatment as a form of nonverbal communication in Generation Z romantic relationship conflicts. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study explored participants’ subjective experiences of the silent treatment. Six participants, consisting of three Generation Z couples, were selected through purposive sampling based on their experience with relationship conflicts involving the silent treatment. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using theories of nonverbal communication and interpersonal conflict. The findings show that the silent treatment is interpreted as a form of nonverbal communication used to express emotions, prevent conflict escalation, and create space for emotional regulation. It is reflected through avoiding eye contact, changes in facial expressions, silence during interactions, and reduced digital communication with partners. In all cases, the silent treatment was temporary and generally followed by reconciliation when communication resumed. These findings suggest that the silent treatment does not always have negative consequences but can also function as a strategy for emotional regulation and conflict management in Generation Z romantic relationships.
