Abstract

Rice cultivation faces several challenges, including attacks by plant pests (OPT). The rice rat (Rattus argentiventer) is a pest that attacks rice plants, both in lowland and upland rice fields. Rice rats cause damage and losses of up to 80% both before and after harvest and negatively impact food security. The aim of this study was to determine the most effective method for controlling rice rats (Rattus argentiventer). The research method employed a qualitative approach, utilizing secondary data on rat populations and control methods in Indonesia from 2020 to 2024. Data analysis was descriptive and presented in tables and figures. The number of catches using the gropyokan method varies significantly depending on several factors, including area size, rat population levels, the number of farmers involved, and the duration of the gropyokan. This variation is demonstrated by the data. For example, there were 534 rats in a 50-hectare area in Batubara, and thousands (3,500) in Sragen could be reached within three hours of operation in some locations, and nearly 6,000 rats in others. Rat control using the rice-fish method improves land use efficiency and also helps control plant pests, particularly rice field rats. Rat control using the rice-fish method improves land use efficiency and also helps control plant pests, particularly rice field rats. Using rat traps is also an effective and environmentally friendly control method. Traps capture rats, both live and dead, without leaving chemicals in the environment. Controlling rats using fumigation is much safer than other methods of rodent control.

Abstract

The rice field rat (Rattus argentiventer) is one of the major pests in rice cultivation that can cause significant yield losses. Effective and environmentally friendly control methods are therefore essential to minimize damage. This study aims to determine the effect of using wire traps on the population of rice field rats in agricultural areas. The research was conducted by installing wire traps at several points in rice fields and comparing the number of rats caught and population changes with areas without traps. The results showed that the use of wire traps significantly reduced the population of rice field rats compared to the control area. In addition, wire traps were found to be effective, easy to use, and environmentally safe. Based on these findings, wire traps can be recommended as one of the control methods in an integrated pest management (IPM) system for rice farming. Keywords: pest control, rice, rice field rat, wire trap. Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a primary commodity in stabilizing the food supply of Indonesian people. However, currently the condition of dry land and paddy fields is experiencing land degradation. Land degradation can be restored to fertility using cow dung compost. This study was designed with a two-factor randomized block design (RAK). The first factor is compost consisting of three levels, namely K0 = without compost, K1 = 50% compost dose, K2 = 100% compost. The second factor consists of two levels, namely S0 = without jajar legowo, S1 = jajar legowo 2:1, resulting in six experimental combinations repeated three times, resulting in a total of 18 experimental units. The research results were tested using analysisi of variance (ANOVA) ά = 5%, followed by the least significant difference (LSD) test at the ά = 5% level. Observation variables included plant height (cm), number of productive tillers, number of full grains (per panicle), wet grain yield per plot (kg), and weight of 1,000 dry grains harvested. The results showed that the 2:1 jajar legowo compost system had no impact on plant height or tiller number at 25 days after planting. The application of compost using the 2:1 jajar legowo system significantly affected rice plant height and tiller number at 50 and 70 days after planting. There was an interaction between compost application and the jajar legowo system on rice plant height at MSP. The compost treatment using the 2:1 jajar legowo system significantly affected the weight of 1,000 grains and the harvest weight of the rice.

Abstract

Rice is the main food crop commodity because the majority of the Indonesian population consumes rice as a staple food. Using superior seeds can help meet the increasing demand for rice due to population growth. There are local superior seeds that have not been utilized optimally by farmers in Lampung Province, namely MSP rice seeds. Since 2022, farmers in North Lampung Regency, precisely in North Kotabumi District, have been cultivating MSP rice. However, not all farmers cultivate MSP rice. The purpose of this study was to determine the comparison of production between MSP and non-MSP rice, to determine the comparison of income levels of MSP and non-MSP rice farming, and to determine the feasibility of MSP rice farming. The number of respondents was 60 farmers, namely 30 MSP rice farmers and 30 non-MSP rice farmers. Data analysis method uses income calculation using revenue structure and cost structure. Feasibility analysis of farming business uses R/C ratio. MSP rice production is lower compared to non-MSP rice production, which is 3,996.81 kg/ha for MSP rice and 4,113.44 kg/ha for non-MSP rice farming. The profit of MSP rice farming is higher than the profit of non-MSP rice farming both on cash costs and on the basis of calculated costs. The profit on cash costs of MSP rice is IDR 32,652,337.58/hectare and IDR 30,462,768.96/hectare for non-MSP rice. The profit on the basis of calculated costs is IDR 26,913,039.49/hectare for MSP rice farming and IDR 24,486,329.15/hectare for non-MSP rice farming. Based on the R/C ratio analysis, MSP rice farming is feasible to be pursued because the R/C ratio value is >1, which is 3.20 R/C ratio of cash costs and 2.31 R/C ratio of calculated costs. So that MSP rice farming has the potential to increase the income of rice farmers in North Kotabumi District.
