Abstract

ABSTRACTXerostomia (dry mouth) is a chronic & acute effect on a cancer patient who receives radiation therapy on the areas ofhead and neck. Earlier studies state that acupuncture helps to relieve the symptoms concerning cancer and xerostomiais one. Laserpuncture is an acupuncture therapy technique that uses the benefit of low energy laser beam that does notgenerate pain and is not an invasive procedure which is more comfortable for patients. This research involved 44xerostomia patients who have underwent complete radiotherapy on the minimum course of 3 months up to amaximum of 1.5 years before going through with the research; the research is clustered into ear laserpuncture and shamlaserpuncture groups. The result shows a mean Xerostomia Inventory (XI) score between two states of pre against postlaserpuncture of 3 and 6 times of treatment that were tested on case group and control group; there’s a mean score oflife quality of pre treatment compared to post treatment of laserpucture on those who underwent 3 times and 6 timeslaserpucture treatment on case group and control group on every variable of life quality, except financial difficulties (FI);and there is a mean pH score on the saliva of those undergoing treatment between the states of pre and post 6 timeslaserpuncture treatment on case group and control group. From this study, we can conclude that laserpuncture on earacupoints MA-TF1 Shenmen and MA-AT parotis gland might increase saliva pH and reduce XI score, and we canconsidered as an adjuvant treatment in xerostomia on cancer patients post radiotherapy.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer patients often experience decreased the immune system such as a decreased of lymphocytes, which can increase mortality. Acupuncture is expected to be a therapeutic option to increase lymphocyte because current pharmacological therapy is very expensive with the risk of adverse event. This study aims to prove the action of Electroacupuncture (EA) as an immunomodulator for cellular immunity by increasing the percentage of lymphocytes of Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) in C3H mice of breast adenocarcinoma model. Methods:Laboratory experimental study with post test only controls group design involving twenty PBS preparations taken from 20 C3H mice of breast adenocarcinoma models divided into 4 groups. Group K with no EA treatment, group P1 was given 1 time EA treatment, group P2 was given 2 times EA treatment and P3 was given 3 times EA treatments (with seven days interval). EA stimulation was performed at ST36 Zusanli, BL18 Ganshu, BL20 Pishu with frequency of 2 Hz for 15 minutes. Result:The mean weight of mice was 23.90 ± 3.03 gr in control group, 25.40 ± 1.54 gr in P1 group, 27.00 ± 3.87 gr in P2 group and 25.90 ± 5.83 gr in P3 group, with most of them were female mice. The mean volume tumor in mice of control group was 14.49 ± 2.75 mm3, 16.72 ± 6,40 mm3 in P1 group, 20.18 ± 5.94 mm3 in P2 group and 22.07 ± 6.51 mm3 in P3 group. The mean percentage of lymphocyte was 44.20 ± 15.72 in control group, 43.00 ± 11.70 in P1 group, 49.60 ± 7.02 in P2 group and 43.20 ± 13.10 in P3 group. The correlation between the number of electroacupuncture treatments on the number of lymphocytes in the treatment group were compared to the control group with p = 0.811. Conclusions: Research acupuncture on cancer management has been done and provided good result. Acupuncture in particular EA has benefits in improving immunity by affecting lymphocyte enhancement. Acupuncture can be considered as adjuvant therapy in cancer patients breast. Abstract

Dementia refers to impairment in more than one domain of cognitive function. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's dementia (AD). AD is associated with the influence of amyloid, oxidative stress, as well as abnormal phosphorylation of the protein Tau which forms neurofibrillary plaques in neurons. Clinical symptoms include progressive memory impairment for current events, cognitive impairment, general confusion, agitation, delusions, social disinhibition, and paranoia. A 68 year old man complained of rapid forgetfulness and decreased cognitive function accompanied by insomnia. Acupuncture manual therapy was performed at points GB20, LI4, HT7, KI3 bilaterally and EX-HN1, EX-HN3, GV20, CV9, CV4, CV3. Combine with scalp acupuncture Zhu Scalp Head and Face, as well as bilateral anterior hypothalamus and master cerebral ear points. Electroacupuncture 2 Hz continuous wave electroacupuncture at points ST25-ST28, CV12-CV6, and ST36-SP6. Therapy is carried out 2 times a week. Evaluation using MMSE ad PSQI. After 10 treatments, there was improvement in clinical symptoms, MMSE and PSQI scores. Manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture, a combination of body points, scalp and ear microcupuncture are useful in the management of Alzheimer's dementia accompanied by insomnia as non-pharmacological adjuvant therapy with positive results. Abstract

Introduction: Postoperative neuropathy can result from nerve transection, bruising, stretching, or inflammation. Chronic Post-Surgical Neuropathic Pain (CPSNP) refers to pain persisting for at least three months after surgery, distinct from preoperative pain and localized to the surgical site or referral area. Acupuncture, a therapeutic technique for acute and chronic pain, has shown promise in managing CPSNP. In this case report, we explore the use of acupuncture to alleviate chronic pain following hand surgery. CPSNP poses significant challenges for patients recovering from surgical procedures. Acupuncture, with its potential to modulate nerve activity and activate pain control systems in the brain, offers an alternative approach to pain management. Case Report: Patient Profile: A 37-year-old woman presented to the medical acupuncture polyclinic with complaints related to her left hand. Specifically, she experienced numbness, heat, and pain in the tips of fingers 2, 3, 4, and 5. Occasionally, the discomfort extended to her elbow. Medical History: The patient had undergone Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) surgery on her left hand approximately one year ago. The diagnosis of CTS was established in 2021, leading to open surgery on the wrist. Current Pain Assessment: The patient reported a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain score of 5. Physical Examination: Examination revealed pain and limited range of motion (ROM) in her hand. Acupuncture Treatment: Manual acupuncture therapy was administered, targeting specific body acupuncture points and utilizing ear acupuncture. Outcome: After six therapy sessions, the patient experienced a reduction in pain intensity and an improvement in overall quality of life. Conclusion: Acupuncture shows promise as an adjunctive therapy for managing chronic post-surgical neuropathic pain. Further research is warranted to explore its efficacy and long-term effects in similar cases.

Abstract

The causes of stunting are multifactorial. In addition to health facilities, maternal and infant health, there are also socioeconomic factors and education levels. Another factor causing stunting is the lack of exclusive breastfeeding for infants. Controlling stunting requires collaboration between various parties, including local government stakeholders, medical and health practitioners, community cadres, and even parents of toddlers affected by stunting. Acupressure is a mechanical pressure technique based on acupuncture points. This technique has the advantages simple, affordable, non-invasive, yet easy to perform, and has been proven effective in many medical conditions based on several previous studies. Several studies have proven the effect of acupressure in increasing breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Acupressure is expected to be a solution to overcome the problem of stunting in Depok City, especially the stunting locus in Kampung Lio, Pancoran Mas District. Counseling and a self-directed acupressure workshop for breastfeeding mothers of stunted toddlers were held as a hybrid online (via Zoom) and offline (via Zoom) session at the Depok Village Office Hall. There were 35 participants (via offline) and 160 participants (via online). A pre- and post-test were conducted to measure knowledge gains before and after the counseling session. Keywords: Acupressure, Toddlers, Breast Milk Production, Stunting
