Abstract

The interpreting of the making ogoh-ogoh based on the perspective of the cultural studies in related to the festival day of the tawur kesanga towards Hindu society in Bali. It recently is an interesting phenomenon to be studied in the academics. Due to the ogoh-ogoh is made as a series for the ceremony of the tawur kesanga lately. It has been a high cost, although, in the literary texts, it does not find the existence of ogoh-ogoh become the completeness of the tawur ceremony itself. Regarding its phenomenon, the author was interested in studying in term of this. The study was intended to interpret the ideology or a truth behind the making of ogoh-ogoh shown of the religious ceremonies. It was conducted applying a qualitative approach included classifying, categorize, understand, and interpret any data or the facts by paraphrase or description, therefore, the conclusion was generally obtained. The results of the analysis were conducted. It can be understood that the making of ogoh-ogoh recently in the Hindu society in Bali, not merely means to cast out of the evil spirits that have been perceived as buta kala by the Hindu society in Bali. However, it was interpreted as a game of the ideology i.e. capitalist ideology. In term of this was evident that the making of ogoh-ogoh lately, no longer using the local materials that can be freely gotten from the surrounding environment, but must be made by lux materials that must be purchased expensive. Thus, it can be concluded that behind the making of ogoh-ogoh related with the ceremony of the tawur kesanga towards Hindu society in Bali lately was initiated by the game of the ideology i.e. capitalist ideology.

Abstract

The difference in religious ideology in the Dayak Katingan family in the village of Tewang Tampang in reality does not trigger conflict, they always live in harmony and harmony. This can be seen from their intimacy and togetherness in daily social interactions. However, behind this harmony there is also a struggle for religious ideology in the practice of tradition. For this reason, the purpose of this study was focused on knowing how the Dayak Katingan family in Tewang Tampang Village articulated its diversity and outlined its implications for harmony in the family. This study uses a qualitative method. Data sources are primary and secondary data. Data was collected through participant observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and document studies. Determination of informants was conducted purposively and Snowball, the theories used were phenomenology theory, hermeneutic theory, and communicative action theory. The results showed that the way the Dayak Katingan family in Tewang Tampang village articulated their family traditions in a different way between Kaharingan Hindus, Islam and Christianity. This can be seen from the articulation presented by them, namely the Hindu Kaharingan people articulating tradition as part of religious rituals and in practice based on established rules. Meanwhile Muslims and Christians only articulate tradition as part of Dayak customs and culture and in practice adapts to the teachings of the religion adhered to. This difference in articulation of tradition has implications for religious attitudes in the family such as the opening of a space for dialogue, a tolerant attitude of religion, and a strengthening of family relations. Abstract

This study discusses”Mercantilism of Knowledge in Education: a Case Study atMelati Sukma Elementary School Denpasar”. The matter observed is a shift ofeducational paradigm, from enlightenment paradigm into instrumental paradigm. Whenthe system of market economy influenced the Indonesian economic system in 1960s or inthe beginning of 1970s, which is now getting more materialistic-capitalistic, socialorganizations such as educational organizations (read: schools) have found it difficult toavoid it. This study aims at exploring why the management of Melati Sukma ElementarySchool Denpasar has implemented “mercantilism of knowledge” in education, and whythe consumers have accepted it. This study also aims at identifying the mechanism ofhow “mercantilism of knowledge” has occurred at Melati Sukma Elementary SchoolDenpasar, and its implications on the pupils, the school, the learning-teaching process, and on the community.Qualitative method was employed for conducting the research. In this context, various types of information related to why the school management has implemented themercantilism of knowledge, the mechanism of how it has occurred, and its implicationson the pupils, the school, the process of learning and teaching process in the classrooms, and the community were obtained. Firstly, problems were identified, then theories forexamining the data were selected, later the primary and secondary data were collected, next the selected data were analyzed and interpreted. Finally, the report writing and theresults of the research were constructed. The theories employed are Comodificationtheory, Hegemony theory, and Deconstruction theory. The results are as follows: firstly, those which have been responsible for themercantilism of knowledge are the fact that the teachers have been getting marginalizedfrom the process of national development, the system of market economy and theconsumptive attitude of the community including the teachers have been getting stronger. The parents’ motivation to send their children to that school has also been in included inthe first result. Secondly, the mercantilism of knowledge at Melati Sukma ElementarySchool has also been implemented through the domination, hegemony, and power of theschool management over the pupils’ parents in the forms of sales of various industrialproducts, provision for additional lessons, and other types of payments. Thirdly, themercantilism of knowledge has also resulted from the attempts made by the school management to make the school look more glorious. The learning process has not beenoriented towards the attempts made to increase the pupils’ intelligence but towards theeconomic advantages. Where the parents will send their children does not depend on thequality of education but on the prestige instead.

Abstract

School yards are a part of a few green open areas in urban environment. Therefore, school yard has important role for urban ecosystem. The goal of this research is to compare bioecological condition among elementary, middle and high schools and analyse the level of relationship among bioecological aspects, students and teachers preferencies toward their school yards. We have conducted research in 2008 which involved 20 elementary, 8 middle and 8 high schools at Denpasar Bali. Those schools were devided to be two groups: A (we observed their shool yards and have taken survey for students and teachers) and B (only taken survey to students and teachers). Results showed that percentage of oppened yard toward total areas of elementary school (46,5±17,1%) higher than middle school (38,8 ±15,5%) and high school (37,5±9,6%). Also the proportion of school garden in elementary school (30,2±20,3%) nearly twice higher than middle school (18,8± 6,3%) and high school (20,0±8,2%). Environmental preferencies of majority sample (>80%) were higher than point 4 of 7 Likert scales. Its mean, they tend to give positive image both artistic (beautiful, green, fresh, healty, happy and wide) and the ecological roles of school yard (rain water catchment, pollution absorbtion, animal habitat, oxygen supply, opennes toward sunlight and plant biodiversity). While plot of factor analysis showed that bioecological scores located in the same field with environmental preferencies of samples from group B. Thus the model of integration between environmental preferencies and bioecological evaluation able to give a new perspective of school yard as a socio-natural unit. Its not only important for ecosystem but also for human well-being. Thus we suggested to apply socio-natural approaches, mainly through enggaging non-owner communities in rating certain of the urban ecosistem.

Abstract

Abstract

The existence of local wisdom possessed by Balinese people can be said to be threatened by social changes and cultural dynamics in the modern era as it is today which is characterized by the values of modernism which are all effective, fast, and tend to be individualistic. These caused Balinese people change such as almost forgetting the noble values that they once had, such as sagalak-sagilik-saguluk, salunglung sabayantaka, paras paros sarpenaya, menyama beraya, having a harmonious attitude. Through this paper, it will be discussed whether the concept of ‘menyama beraya‘ is still useful to prevent intolerance during silent day (or in a holy day = Nyepi). The conclusion that can be drawn is that through the celebration of Nyepi, tolerance can be built in social life, through the implementation of ‘catur brata penyepian’ . However, in reality this cannot be done optimally, considering the transmission of the values of social wisdom and the values of traditional wisdom that should be carried out by the family towards children has not run optimally. The concept of menyama beraya as one of the values of Balinese social wisdom, cannot yet be applied optimally in the present context, because modernism causes things that are traditional to be transformed. It is suggested that parents should socialize the values of social wisdom, the values of traditional wisdom, and the values of local wisdom to their children. By doing this way children will not be uprooted from their cultural roots, even though they cannot avoid the influence of global culture.
