Abstract

Introduction: Implementing distance learning for final-year nursing students preparing their theses often adds significant burden and stress. Recognizing that stress levels can vary between male and female students is important. This study examines the differences in stress levels among final-year nursing students based on gender. Method: The study employed a comparative research design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 167 final-year nursing students from the Bachelor of Nursing programs at Airlangga University and Nahdlatul Ulama University in Surabaya participated in the study. The researchers utilized a non-probability sampling technique, specifically purposive sampling. The independent variable in this study was gender, while the dependent variable was the stress level. The instrument used for data collection was the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) 42 questionnaire, which employs a Likert scale. The data were analyzed using a paired T-test. Results: A significant proportion of students experiencing stress are female, accounting for 83.2% or 139 individuals. The most frequently observed stress level was mild, affecting 28.1% or 66 students. Furthermore, the comparative analysis revealed a notable difference in stress levels between male and female students in their final semester. Conclusions: The findings indicate a significant disparity in stress levels between male and female students, highlighting gender differences as a contributing factor to the variations in stress among the study subject.

Abstract

Abstract

Early management in the pre-hospital phase plays a crucial role in the emergency medical service system. Quick, accurate, and targeted interventions can prevent patient deterioration, reduce mortality rates, and improve clinical outcomes. This phase begins with the initial assessment, which serves as the foundation for determining the priority of medical interventions. This review aims to identify and analyze various literatures related to the strategies of early management applied to patients in pre-hospital care settings. Method: A systematic review was conducted by searching five major databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, and ProQuest. The search was limited to publications from 2019 to 2024 using keywords such as “initial management,” “pre-hospital care,” and “emergency patient”. A total of 88 articles were obtained, while 16 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed descriptively. The review indicates that structured and evidence-based early management in the pre-hospital phase can improve handling efficiency, accelerate intervention time, and reduce the risk of complications in emergency patients. Medical personnel skills, clear protocols, and a well-established coordination system are key factors for success. Early management in the pre-hospital phase is a crucial part of the emergency medical system. Optimal implementation based on scientific evidence can improve service quality and have a positive impact on patient safety and prognosis.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic which is a non-natural disaster, the ARDS cases (Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome) rocketed. Despite the advantages of prone positioning for ARDS care, ICU staff seldom use it due to the unavailability of positioning tools, making it a challenging task for nurses. This study aims to investigate nurses' experiences with manual prone positioning and propose ICU-friendly prone position tools. This research method used a qualitative phenomenology theory study to 15 ICU nurses who were experienced in prone positioning at least 10 times to intubated patients and had complaints about the intervention. The experience was gathered using structured questions and recorded. The data was analyzed following Colaizzi’s thematic method, and all the emerged themes were collected and reported. The research results show that fifteen interviewed nurses noted that prone positioning is physically demanding and requires a coordinated team with a minimum of three staffs, 2 handles patient positioning, 1 leader securing the intubation tube. Before starting, the team assesses the difficulty level. Recommended tools include a slide sheet with handles, a modified Vollman prone positioner, and a crane-like prone harness. The conclusion is nurses find tools highly beneficial for prone positioning but will improvise with available resources like underpads as a ring-shaped pillow if tools are unavailable.

Abstract

Trail runs have a high risk of injury like ankle sprains. Proper ankle sprain first aid requires preparedness to prevent more serious danger and ensure its success in the pre-hospital setting. This study aimed to explore key determinants of trail run athletes’ preparedness to perform pre-hospital first aid for ankle sprain using the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model theory. The research method used a descriptive correlational which approached cross-sectionally. The research recruited 120 trail run athletes of two professional clubs who were selected by simple random sampling. Data was collected using questionnaires. The variables measured were knowledge, belief, value, attitude, and confidence. Bivariate analysis used chi-square and spearman-rho tests. Multivariate analysis used a logistic regression test. All of the statistical analyses used α = 0,05. The research results show that half of the respondents was 18 – 35 years old. The factors correlated to the trail run preparedness to perform pre-hospital first aid for ankle sprain was as follows. The majority had a medium level of knowledge (54,2%) and a significance level of p = 0.000. Similar trends were found between belief, value, and confidence in which there were no low levels of those variables with the same significance value of p = 0.000. Lastly, respondent’s percentages of attitudes were almost equally distributed between negative (45%) and positive (66%) with a significance level of p = 0,000. In multivariate analysis, all the variables had p-values < 0,05. The OR was as follows, knowledge 14,713; belief 77,919; value 27,554; attitude 7,213; and confidence 12,408.  The conclusion is found that knowledge, belief, value, attitude, and confidence were significantly correlated with the athlete’s preparedness Together all variables were correlated significantly to the athlete’s preparedness to perform pre-hospital first aid for ankle sprain. In conclusion, to improve athlete safety during trail runs is by improving the preparedness for any adverse event including trail runs. All of the factors could increase preparedness, but some factors resulted in higher preparedness. The factors that have more effect on preparedness than the others are belief and value.
