Abstract

Focusing on the swiftly transforming estuary of the Air Rami River in Mukomuko District, this study investigates the intricate interplay between morphological and sedimentation attributes and their influence on estuarine morphology. The research seeks to elucidate the effects of these characteristics on shaping the Air Rami Estuary. Employing direct field measurements and laboratory analyses, data encompassing river flow velocity, discharge parameters, sediment influx, samples, and estuary imagery from USGS were collected in March 2023. Notably, the highest and lowest river flow discharges were 29.32 m3/s and 16.42 m3/s, respectively, while sedimentation rates ranged from 0.037 kg/s to 0.042 kg/s, and sediment influx varied between 0.18 m3/s and 1.26 m3/s. The findings underscore the pivotal role of morphological and sedimentation dynamics in shaping the estuary's form, yielding valuable insights into coastal morphological evolution and management strategies. Highlight: Estuary Transformation: This study delves into the rapidly evolving Air Rami River estuary, unraveling the intricate interaction between Morphological Attributes and Sedimentation Dynamics that shape its morphology. Comprehensive Analysis: Employing direct measurements and laboratory analyses, the research captures a range of River Flow Discharges, Sedimentation Rates, and Sediment Influx, shedding light on the multifaceted processes at play. Implications for Management: The findings highlight the fundamental role of morphological and sedimentation dynamics, offering valuable insights for Coastal Management Strategies and informed decision-making in coastal environments. Abstract

Investigating the Air Rami River Estuary in Mukomuko Regency, this study examines the influence of siltation on mixing characteristics within the estuarine environment. The research aims to discern and characterize mixing patterns in the estuary, employing direct field measurements conducted during both tide and low tide conditions in March 2023. Descriptive and quantitative analyses reveal notable salinity variations, with tidal conditions exhibiting a peak salinity of 10 ppt at a depth of 2 meters, and low tide conditions showing a maximum salinity of 5 ppt at 1.5 meters depth. Temperature variations are also observed, with tide conditions reaching 31.5°C and low tide conditions at 27.2°C. Calculation of the estuary number indicates a perfectly mixed stratified estuary mixing type, characterized by an estuary number magnitude of 0.53. These findings offer insights into estuarine mixing dynamics and their implications for coastal ecosystems. Highlight: Siltation Impact: Investigates the influence of siltation on mixing patterns in the Air Rami River Estuary, Mukomuko Regency. Salinity and Temperature Variations: Describes notable variations in salinity and temperature during tide and low tide conditions, providing insights into estuarine dynamics. Estuary Number Analysis: Utilizes the estuary number to classify estuarine mixing type, revealing a perfectly mixed stratified estuary with implications for coastal ecosystems. Abstract

The Selagan Jaya River Estuary frequently undergoes shape changes, prompting this study to unravel the influence of currents and tides on its morphological evolution. Field measurements encompassing current and tidal data, supplemented by secondary tidal data from TMD and estuary morphology data from USGS, were employed. Findings reveal a mixed semidiurnal tide with a Formzhal value of 0.491 for the Selagan Jaya Estuary. The lowest ebb elevation stands at 0.0117 m, contrasting with the highest flood elevation of 0.6046 m. Flood current velocities range from 0.193 to 1 m/s, while ebb currents span 0.127 to 0.307 m/s. Validation between field and TMD tidal data attains a 98.44% accuracy. Importantly, currents and tides distinctly shape the Selagan Jaya River Estuary; during flood tides, sediment-laden currents ingress, while ebb tides with slower currents hinder sediment egress, underscoring their profound morphological impact. Highlight: Estuarine Morphological Dynamics: Investigates the dynamic nature of the Selagan Jaya River Estuary's shape changes and its underlying processes. Tidal and Current Influence: Unravels the intricate interplay between currents and tides, revealing their significant role in shaping the estuarine morphology. Formzhal Analysis: Introduces the Formzhal value as a key indicator of the estuary's tidal characteristics and their implications for morphological evolution. Abstract

This research has not been discussed previously, especially in the waters of Bengkulu, which has a strategic position in relation to the formation and movement of tropical cyclones in the eastern Indian Ocean. The lack of research in this region has resulted in limited information on the direct impact of cyclones on oceanographic parameters. This study aims to identify the impact of tropical cyclone Anggrek on oceanographic parameters in Bengkulu waters during and after the occurrence of tropical cyclone Anggrek. This study is limited to the waters of Bengkulu with a focus on the period from January 15 to February 13, 2024. Reanalysis data from the Marine Copernicus numerical model was used and analyzed temporally with a quantitative descriptive approach, followed by a t-test: Paired Two Sample for Means. The results of the oceanographic parameter analysis showed significant changes due to the influence of Tropical Cyclone Anggrek in the waters of Bengkulu. Based on the results of the paired t-test, all main parameters showed significant differences  between normal conditions and cyclone conditions. Sea surface temperature decreased during the cyclone due to vertical mixing processes, then increased again after the cyclone moved away. Salinity values also showed significant differences. Wave height and current velocity experienced noticeable fluctuations, and wind speed conditions during Tropical Cyclone Anggrek generally increased. The results of this study provide updates to BMKG predictions and support the strengthening of early warning systems in the western coastal region of Sumatra, particularly in the waters of Bengkulu, by understanding changes in sea and atmospheric conditions after the cyclone.
