Abstract

This present study was conducted to investigate the effect of adding hydrophobically modified end-capped (HM) polymers with various polyethylene oxide (PEO) chain lengths on the structure and viscosity of anionic vesicles dispersion. A pronounced increase in viscosity was observed upon adding small amount of such polymers. Based on the dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) analysis, 10 to 30 polymer molecules per vesicles can reach maximum viscosity and where polymer molecules can interconnect the vesicles without disrupting their structure. In addition, the kinetic stability of the vesicle dispersion also enhanced. From the measurement of the electrical conductivity of the dispersion, it was observed that the presence of the PEO and polypropylene oxide (PPO) group could induce the permeability of the vesicle membrane by altering their internal structure. Controlling viscosity of vesicles dispersion without changing its structure is useful for the further application of vesicles system such as in drug delivery, cosmetics and biomedical.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to improve the in-vitro dissolution rate of quercetin (Qu) using cocrystallization of quercetin. Cocrystals of quercetin (Co Qu) were produced with malonic acid (Ma) as coformer at ratio 1:2 using solvent evaporation method. Cocrystals quercetin-malonic acid (Co Qu-Ma) was characterized using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) and in-vitro dissolution study. A new endothermic peak at 277.9 °C was shown from the thermogram. Diffractogram of Co Qu-Ma showed a new diffraction peak at 2θ 9.81, 12.99, and 19.80°. Microphotograph showed that Qu and Ma exhibited a columnar-shaped and a pebble-shaped crystal, respectively, and FTIR wavenumber of O-H functional group of quercetin was shifted from its original position at 3411 to 3428 cm-1 in the physical mixture (pm) of Qu-Ma and 3418 cm-1 in Co Qu-Ma, respectively. The physicochemical characterizations using DTA, PXRD, SEM and FTIR indicated that Co Qu-Ma were successfully obtained through solvent evaporation method. The in-vitro dissolution rate of Co Qu-Ma was 95.30% at 60 min. Cocrystals effectively increased dissolution rate and dissolution efficiency in comparison to the pure quercetin and physical mixture of quercetin-malonic acid.

Abstract

Curcumin is a natural product with potential pharmaceutical applications that can be augmented by drug delivery technology such as nano emulsion. Our study focuses on microscopic structural and dynamics response of curcumin encapsulation in micellar system with lecithin as a natural surfactant under variations of composition and temperature using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results highlight the self-assembly of lecithin micelle, with curcumin encapsulated inside, from initial random configurations in the absence of external field. The variation of composition shows that lecithin can aggregate into spherical and rod-like micelle with the second critical micelle concentration lies between 0.17-0.22 mol dm−3. The radial local density centering at the micelle center of mass shows that the effective radius of micelle is indeed defined by the hydrophilic groups of lecithin molecule and theencapsulated curcumin molecules are positioned closer to these hydrophilic groups than the innermost part of the micelle. The spherical micelle is shown to be thermally stable within the temperature range of 277-310 K without a perceivable change in the spherical eccentricity. The dynamics of micelle are enhanced by the temperature, but it is shown to be insensitive to the variation of lecithin-curcumin composition within the studied range. Simulation results are in agreement with the pattern obtained from experimental results based on particle size, polydispersity index, and encapsulation efficiency.

Abstract

Hydrogel poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-2-(dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate) or (P(NVCL-co-DMAEMA)) containing the active drug metformin HCl were synthesized using the free radical polymerization method in the presence of DMAEMA and NVCL monomers by using two different crosslinkers: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). FTIR spectra confirmed the successful formation of hydrogel and its loading with metformin HCl. SEM analysis revealed the physical shape and surface features. Regarding physical appearance, the texture of the hydrogel is sticky and elastic. When the hydrogel was immersed in a solution, it swelled, and returned to its original shape after drying. Additionally, the chemical degradation temperature is thermally stable at 329.75 °C. The loading test results showed that the active drug in EGDMA was 18.38 (% w/w) and 26.19 (% w/w) in MBA as crosslinkers, loaded within 24 h. The drug-loaded hydrogel containing EGDMA as crosslinkers in pH 7.4 had the highest drug release in 24 h compared to MBA. Then, the drug released from hydrogel with EGDMA in pH 2 had the highest drug release than MBA within 30 min. The P(NVCL-co-DMAEMA) hydrogel has the potential for a drug delivery system. However, additional optimizations are necessary to improve the efficiency of the hydrogels as a carrier.

Abstract

Excessive fatigue and burnout are serious issues frequently experienced by healthcare workers and patients with chronic illnesses, particularly within high-pressure healthcare environments. These conditions not only impair the performance of medical personnel but also negatively affect the therapeutic outcomes of patients. To address this problem, a community service activity was conducted through educational outreach on fatigue and burnout management, utilizing acupressure, traditional remedies, and aromatherapy. The program involved 49 participants, including healthcare workers and Surabaya's chronic disease patients. Held on September 11, 2024, the activity employed lectures and two-way discussions as its primary methods. The material covered included traditional medicine, basic acupressure techniques, and training in roll-on and massage oil aromatherapy preparation. A structured module was developed to enhance learning effectiveness, and participants' comprehension was evaluated through pre- and post-tests. Statistical analysis using a paired t-test revealed a significant improvement in participants' understanding (p <0.01), with an average score increase of 19.8%. This initiative demonstrates that practical and interactive education can effectively improve participants' knowledge and skills in managing fatigue and burnout. Therefore, the outcomes of this activity are essential as a promotive and preventive effort to support the physical and mental well-being of vulnerable groups in healthcare settings.
