Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of local wisdom-based instructional materials in Minangkabau context for the English for Tourism course. To realize the aim, an R&D design was applied by adapting Borg & Gall’s first four stages, namely product analysis, initial product development, expert validation, and product revision. Product analysis includes analyzing the characteristics and needs of students towards the teaching materials; b) interviews with competent resource persons to obtain input for initial product development; c) a review of the relevant theory of initial product development. Initial Product Development includes formulating core topics, designing syllabus, gathering resources for designing draft, and designing, editing and printing prototypes. Validation was conducted to figure out whether the prototype model had integrated Minangkabau local wisdom in teaching materials for the course and was suitable for learning into speaking. The product analysis stage resulted in initial product development in the form of a prototype consisting of 14 units, where each unit consists of 4 parts, namely: introduction, common expressions, sample conversations, and role play. The validation results confirm that, in general, in terms of the relevance of teaching materials to course objectives, the prototype was valid (3.15 out of 4) and very valid (4.03 out of 5). In addition, in terms of the principles of learning speaking skills, the prototype was very valid (3.66 out of 4). Furthermore, from the aspect of integrating Minangkabau local wisdom into teaching materials, this prototype has provided a model for practical conversations for tour guiding activities in Minangkabau context.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine whether there is a correlation between students’ reading anxiety and their reading ability. This research is a correlational study. The population of this research were the 66 students of the English Teaching Department at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The sample was chosen by simple random sampling technique using Slovin’s formula. As a result, 55 students were used as a sample. The data were gathered by using questionnaires and reading test. The result of this research indicates that there was a correlation between students’ reading anxiety and their reading ability. It is indicated by the data analysis using the “r” product moment formula. The result shows that the calculated correlation coefficient (rxy) was -0.343 which has a negative sign, which means “rxy” has a negative direction. Next, “rxy” (-0.343) with degree of freedom (df)= N-2 (56-2) = 54. It can be stated that the r-table was 0.254 at the level significant 5%. It can be concluded that Ha was accepted because r-calculated (-0.343) was higher than the value of the r-table (0.254).

Abstract

The Utilization of Digital Applications in Education Facilitates the Teaching and Learning Process. Quizlet, as one such application for language learning, is examined in this research to assess its effectiveness in enhancing Early English vocabulary for 5-6 years old. The research employs a quantitative method through surveys, collecting data via questionnaires based on theoretical frameworks. Results indicate that the use of Quizlet enhances English vocabulary for young children, as evidenced by their recognition of English words. This suggests that Quizlet can aid teachers in introducing English to early learners, providing an alternative method to improve English vocabulary for young children. Future research may explore further developments in the utilization of similar applications.

Abstract

The limitations of the teaching materials, the absence of sample questions, individual assignments, and evaluations of narrative text materials are the issues covered in this study. This research aims to describe the needs of teachers and students for an electronic module (e-module) based on the scientific approach, to develop a prototype for an e-module based on the scientific approach, and to describe the experts’ validation of the e-module. This study employed R&D using the 4D development model, which has four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. Three validators—two lecturers and one teacher—were used to evaluate the e-module. This research findings show as follows. Firstly, teachers and students need narrative text e-module teaching materials employing a scientific approach, secondly, the e-module narrative text prototype adheres to the scientific approach. Finally, the validation test on e-module narrative text for English learning is categorized as valid. These findings recommend that using the scientific approach-based e-module narrative text material that was developed with the help of the KSOFT flipbook maker is imperatively implemented in teaching a narrative text in the tenth grade of Senior High School.

Abstract

Abstract

An important component of elementary school students' academic growth is their enthusiasm for reading, especially in the lower grades. The purpose of this study is to examine students' demands for illustrated storybooks, confirm the accuracy of the created books, gauge how useful they are for piqueing children's interest in reading, and measure the effects of utilizing these books in the classroom. This study uses a research and development methodology to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The four steps of the research process define, design, develop, and disseminate are guided by the 4D model. The results of this study support the usefulness of employing illustrated storybooks to increase pupils' enthusiasm for reading. The storybooks are suitable to satisfy the demands of the pupils thanks to the creation and validation procedures. The storybooks' ability to encourage reading engagement among primary school pupils is shown by the favorable response from instructors and students regarding the usefulness of the books. This study makes a contribution to the field of education by offering instructors insightful information and a useful tool to raise their students' motivation for reading and general literacy ability.
