Abstract

Kata Kunci: Edukasi, Ascariasis, Gampong Jawa  ABSTRACT Ascariasis is a worm infection caused by the Ascaris lumbricoides worm, one of the most common human parasitic infections found worldwide. Soil plays a crucial role in the life cycle of Ascaris lumbricoides. The feces of people with worms are an important source of soil contamination. Tengku Muda Hamlet is the last hamlet in Gampong Jawa, Kuta Raja District, Banda Aceh City. The environment in Tengku Muda Hamlet is still very slum-like and located on the riverbank, densely populated, with poor hygiene and sanitation, and a lack of clean water facilities. In this hamlet, some people still do not have latrines, and children and toddlers still defecate in their yards. The purpose of this community service is to educate the community to be free from ascariasis infections transmitted through soil in Tengku Muda Hamlet, Gampong Jawa. The method used is an outreach method, using visual aids and using a questionnaire as an instrument. The target audience is housewives with toddlers and elementary school-aged children. The number of participants in this community service activity was 30 people. The activity stages began with a pre-test followed by a presentation of the activity material. After the presentation of the material, a question and answer session was held with participants being given the opportunity to ask questions, then brochures were distributed, followed by a post-test. The results of the data analysis showed that there was an increase in public knowledge after the education, with 93% of respondents understanding the definition of ascariasis, the causes of ascariasis, the symptoms and dangers of ascariasis, how ascariasis is transmitted through soil media, how to prevent ascariasis and how to treat if infected with ascariasis. It can be concluded that this educational activity ran smoothly and successfully and there was an increase in public knowledge after the education. Keywords: Education, Ascariasis, Gampong Jawa

Abstract

Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections have a significant impact on sexual and reproductive health worldwide. Yeast infections are not generally considered sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) because they are caused by an overgrowth of fungi already present in the body. However, sexual activity can sometimes cause this imbalance. The purpose of this community service is to increase the knowledge and understanding of candidiasis among the public, particularly final-year students of the Aceh Ministry of Health Polytechnic of Health. The method used was an outreach method, using visual aids and a questionnaire as an instrument. The target audience was 80 final-year students majoring in TLM at the Aceh Ministry of Health Polytechnic of Health. The activity began with a pre-test followed by a presentation of the activity material. After the presentation, a question-and-answer session was held with participants given the opportunity to ask questions, followed by brochures being distributed, followed by a post-test. Data analysis showed a 95% increase in student knowledge after the outreach. It can be concluded that this outreach activity ran smoothly and successfully, with participants' knowledge increasing after the outreach.

Abstract

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen and the principal causative agent of candidiasis, whose laboratory identification frequently relies on selective culture media most notably Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) at considerable cost. As a practical alternative, this study evaluated the potential of kratok bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) seeds processed as flour-based agar (FBKA) and boiled-extract agar (BEKA) for supporting C. albicans growth. A pure laboratory experimental design was employed, comparing macroscopic and microscopic colonial characteristics between PDA (control) and both alternative media following 72 hours of incubation at 37°C, with three independent replicates (n = 3). Both alternative media supported C. albicans growth, producing colonies with a cream to yellowish coloration, a characteristic yeast odor, and a convex surface morphology by day 3. Microscopic examination via the germ tube test on both alternative media confirmed pseudohyphal formation. Kruskal–Wallis analysis revealed significant inter-media differences in colony diameter on day 3 (H = 7.200; p = 0.027). Post-hoc Dunn's test demonstrated that BEKA produced colonies of ≤3 mm at day 3, statistically comparable to PDA (z = 1.342; p = 0.179, ns), whereas FBKA yielded colonies of ≤2 mm and differed significantly from PDA (z = 2.683; p = 0.007). These findings indicate that the boiled-extract medium outperforms the flour-based formulation and warrants consideration as an efficient, cost-effective substitute for C. albicans culture in resource-limited laboratory settings.
