Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the important elements that must be possessed by students. In learning, critical thinking skills have been applied in learning environments to address student challenges in the 21st century. This study aims to explore students' critical thinking skills during the learning process using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by the probing prompting technique. The method used in this study was a literature review, by analyzing and synthesizing several Physics education journals published in 2017-2022 which discussed critical thinking skills, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) models, and probing prompting techniques with the research sample being students at elaboration of junior, high school, and college students who have different levels of understanding. Based on the results of the 40 journals in this study, it was found that the PBL model assisted by the probing prompting technique is an innovative learning model that can be applied in active learning to improve critical thinking skills, which is one of the dimensions in the Pancasila student profile. This is because this model displays various problems that occur in everyday life, through a series of questions as a guide so that it can stimulate students to seek and find solutions to a problem. The results of this study can be used as recommendations for teachers in classroom learning activities to improve students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Solar flares (SFs) are the most powerful bursts of energy in the solar system that often have a bad effect on space weather. Until now, the cause of its appearance is not known for sure. Nevertheless, SFs are known to have magnetic properties attached to them. Therefore, understanding the configuration of the magnetic field on the sun plays an important role in SFs prediction efforts. Using SFs flux data recorded by X-ray Sensors on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) which is mapped with 13 parameters of the magnetic vector data of the solar photosphere layer recorded by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) at the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and the Machine Learning (ML) Random Ferns (RFe) algorithm,  This study tries to predict the emergence of multiclass SFs (B, C, M, and X) along with binary SFs (BC and MX). This study uses data from May 1, 2010 to May 10, 2020, with a total of 30 classes X, 443 classes M, 1032 classes C, 751 classes B, 473 classes MX, and 1783 classes BC. This study also applies the oversampling method to handle the imbalanced nature of the data on SFs data. Overall, it can be seen that predicting the occurrence of SFs using RFe is a valid effort. The highest average scores achieved by this study for sensitivity/recall, precision, and True Skill Statistics (TSS) in multiclass SFs were 74.4%, 50.3%, and 58.7%, respectively; and in binary SFs are 87.7%, 77.7%, and 72.8%.

Abstract

The determination of the start time for Zuhr prayer in its calculation does not refer to the actual natural phenomena but is based on the Sun's transit at the meridian, plus a specific margin of safety (ihtiyath) that differs from the ihtiyath values used for other prayer times. This study demonstrates the duration of the Sun's decline throughout the year to validate the use of this specific ihtiyath for Zuhr. The calculation of the Sun's decline duration uses data on solar declination and semi-diameter, which are then simulated for the entire year of 2025. The simulation results show that the duration of the Sun's decline ranges from 63.64 to 70.85 seconds. When rounding up the duration of the decline and adding an ihtiyath value of 2 minutes (similar to the ihtiyath for other prayer times), the conclusion from this study suggests that the ihtiyath for Zuhr should be 4 minutes. However, it would be better if the calculation of the start time for Zuhr prayer used corrections based on solar declination and semi-diameter data to indicate the actual phenomenon of the start time for Zuhr prayer and to avoid misconceptions by using a uniform ihtiyath for all prayer times.

Abstract

Assessment in the form of an instrument is very important to test for validity and reliability so that it can measure student learning outcomes. We implemented a measurement instrument designed to assess students' understanding of elasticity. The measurement instrument consisted of 15 items. The instrument was administered to students who were taking physics subjects in senior high school in their second year. In total, 74 students were taken from two classes in Padang, Indonesia. In this study, the students' performance was collected as quantitative data and evaluated using the Rasch model. The results showed that the data matched the Rasch model measurements. Moreover, female students answered 53 percent of the questions better than male students. Furthermore, the DIF plot shows that S8 is the most difficult problem, while S14 is the easiest. There are two gender bias questions, namely S12 and S14. Both questions were easily solved by female students. However, all questions can be used to measure students' abilities in elasticity and Hooke's law. This study seeks to make a contribution to the literature on EMCI evaluations by offering a case study for academics and researchers to use in assessing students' elasticity skills
