Abstract

The rise of intolerance and radicalism among adolescents has become a serious challenge in the field of education, particularly in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). This study aims to examine the extent to which the values of religious moderation such as tolerance, anti-radicalism, and patriotism are integrated into the PAI curriculum at the secondary school level. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through content analysis of curriculum documents, including Core Competencies (KI), Basic Competencies (KD), syllabi, and PAI textbooks. The findings reveal that the values of religious moderation are reflected in several learning materials, especially on topics such as ethics toward others, interfaith harmony, and the role of religion in national life. However, the implementation of these values in the classroom still faces obstacles, such as limited teacher understanding and a tendency toward normative teaching methods. Therefore, strengthening the curriculum and enhancing teacher competence in delivering moderation values are urgently needed to ensure that PAI effectively contributes to shaping a generation of moderate, tolerant, and patriotic Muslims.

Abstract

Abstract: Prologue: Halal branding in Indonesia has evolved beyond a religious requirement into a complex arena where spiritual authenticity intersects with market commodification. While intended to embody ethical compliance, the proliferation of halal labels among the expanding Muslim middle class has transformed "halal" into a competitive economic signifier. Despite extensive studies on consumer behavior, limited research critically examines the multipolar contestation among state authority, religious scholars, and market actors over how to navigate the tension between substantive religiosity and symbolic capital. Objective: This study aims to conceptualize the paradox of halal branding as a "hybridization" of religious, identity, and economic dimensions. It seeks to examine how this contestation shapes branding practices in Indonesia and evaluate its impact on religious sincerity through the lens of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. Methods: The research employs a qualitative approach combining an interdisciplinary literature review with field observations. Empirical data were gathered through the researcher's direct involvement in assisting Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in the "SEHATI" (Sertifikat Halal Gratis; Free Halal Certification) program across Central and East Java (Semarang, Tuban, and Bojonegoro). The study utilizes a political economy of Islamic consumption framework, analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis, to map the shifting authority from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to the state (BPJPH) and its implications for market dynamics. Results/Findings: The findings demonstrate that halal branding in Indonesia operates through a "dual movement": the moralization of markets and the marketization of morality. Results indicate that while state-led certification (BPJPH) has democratized market access for MSEs, it has also triggered a contestation over "epistemic authority" between the state and the ulama. The study identifies that successful branding—exemplified by the cosmetics and tourism sectors—relies on a synergy in which religious values, modern identity, and economic logic reinforce one another. However, a significant paradox remains: the dominance of market rationality often leads to a "shallowing of meaning," where the halal label risks becoming a mere commodity, potentially displacing the substance of spiritual values. Contribution: This study enriches the sociology of religion and Islamic political economy by applying Abdul Majid an-Najjar's framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah—specifically ḥifẓ al-mujtama' (protecting society) and ḥifẓ al-kiyān al-insānī (protecting human existence)—to evaluate market ethics. It proposes a balanced branding model that integrates institutional transparency with a religious narrative, providing a strategic framework for policymakers and businesses to ensure that halal branding enhances substantive religiosity rather than merely facilitating the commercialization of Islamic identity.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of inclusive Islamic education through a comparative analysis of the educational thought of Nurcholish Madjid and Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), two influential Muslim intellectuals whose ideas have significantly shaped contemporary Islamic discourse in Indonesia. The study aims to identify the convergences and divergences in their perspectives on educational objectives, curriculum orientation, learning approaches, and the role of Islamic education in fostering an inclusive and pluralistic society. Employing a qualitative approach based on library research and comparative content analysis of the primary works of both scholars, supported by relevant secondary literature, the findings reveal that both thinkers reject formalistic and exclusive interpretations of Islamic education and instead advocate an educational model grounded in openness, humanity, and a contextual understanding of Islamic teachings. While Nurcholish Madjid emphasizes rationality, intellectual freedom, and the integration of religious and modern knowledge, Abdurrahman Wahid highlights pluralism, social justice, local wisdom, and the transformative role of pesantren. Despite these different emphases, both share a common vision of Islamic education as a means of cultivating democratic, tolerant, and socially responsible individuals. This study contributes to enriching contemporary discourse on inclusive Islamic education and provides a conceptual foundation for developing educational practices that are responsive to the challenges of multicultural societies.

Abstract

This paper examines al-Ghazali’s epistemology in the context of Islamic religious education, focusing on the integration of knowledge, faith, and morality. Al-Ghazali views knowledge not merely as an intellectual tool but as a means to draw closer to God and purify the soul (tazkiyatun nafs). In this framework, knowledge must be accompanied by firm faith and noble character to avoid becoming unbeneficial knowledge. Contemporary Islamic education often emphasizes cognitive aspects while neglecting spiritual and moral dimensions. Through a library research approach, this article highlights the importance of integrating intellectual and spiritual elements in the teaching of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). Al-Ghazali’s thoughts offer a solution to the moral and spiritual crisis in education and encourage the development of a holistic and transformative Islamic education curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the character education of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers through the understanding of the values of sincerity (ikhlas) and trustworthiness (amanah) as presented in Tafsir al-Ibriz by K.H. Bisri Mustofa. In the context of teacher professionalism, these two values are foundational pillars that shape integrity and exemplary conduct in education. Using a qualitative approach based on library research and thematic interpretation analysis, this study finds that sincerity in Tafsir al-Ibriz is interpreted as pure devotion to Allah without expecting worldly rewards, while trustworthiness is understood as a moral and spiritual responsibility in fulfilling educational duties. These values play a crucial role in shaping teachers who are not only pedagogically competent but also possess high moral integrity. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of character education for IRE teachers that is contextual and rooted in classical Islamic values.

Abstract

Students’ learning motivation plays a crucial role in determining the success of the educational process, yet many learners in the contemporary era experience declining enthusiasm due to unsupportive environments and monotonous instructional practices. This study addresses how Quantum Learning can enhance students’ learning motivation and examines its compatibility with the values of contemporary Islamic education. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through library research by analyzing relevant literature on Quantum Learning and Islamic educational principles. The findings indicate that core elements of Quantum Learning, including a positive learning environment, emotional engagement, and holistic learning, align with Islamic concepts of internal motivation such as sincere intention (niyyah) and the pursuit of knowledge as an act of worship. The study argues that integrating Quantum Learning with Islamic educational values can foster an effective, engaging, and spiritually grounded learning system that supports both cognitive and affective development.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of mothers in child education based on contemporary interpretations of Surah Maryam. Surah Maryam not only presents narratives of faith and monotheism but also showcases the exemplary figure of a mother, Maryam bint Imran, in nurturing noble values in her child, Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him). This qualitative research employs a library research method and a thematic exegesis approach to analyze Surah Maryam through contemporary tafsir works such as Tafsir al-Misbah (M. Quraish Shihab), Tafsir al-Munir (Wahbah az-Zuhaili), and Fi Zhilal al-Qur'an (Sayyid Qutb). The findings reveal that Maryam represents a mother with profound spiritual strength, emotional resilience, and moral commitment in educating her child. In the context of modern education, these values are highly relevant as a foundation for reinforcing the maternal role in character development. The study concludes that contemporary interpretations of Surah Maryam emphasize the critical role of mothers as the first and foremost educators in the family, particularly in instilling faith, patience, and responsibility. The implication of this study highlights the need to integrate Qur'anic values into family education as the cornerstone of children's character formation

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, algorithmic systems, and big data has transformed educational practices while raising concerns about declining spiritual awareness and ethical values. Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) is therefore expected to strengthen not only digital competencies but also learners' moral and spiritual development. This study analyzes the integration of philosophical Sufism (tasawuf falsafi) into PAI as a foundation for reconstructing a digital spirituality-based curriculum in the algorithmic era. Using a qualitative library research approach, the study examines classical works of philosophical Sufism alongside contemporary literature on Islamic education and digital technology. The findings reveal that the concepts of ma'rifah, mahabbah, tazkiyat al-nafs, and insan kamil provide a philosophical framework for reinforcing learners' ethical and spiritual dimensions amid algorithmic dominance. These values can be integrated through the reformulation of educational objectives, reflective learning materials, and pedagogical practices that foster self-awareness, digital ethics, and critical reflection. This study proposes a conceptual curriculum framework that integrates technological advancement with Islamic spirituality, enabling PAI to respond more effectively to contemporary educational challenges.
