Abstract

This study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach to analyze how Al Jazeera Arabic media shapes the construction of reality regarding the fall of Bashar al-Assad from the Syrian presidency. This study uses two data types in different formats: online news articles and videos from Al Jazeera Arabic's YouTube channel. The use of these two media formats represents a novelty in discourse studies as it expands the scope of analysis to include variations in text form and medium. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse analysis technique, namely the dimensions of text, discourse practice, and social practice. The results of the analysis show that both data sets use ideological and symbolic language to frame the Bashar al-Assad regime as a repressive actor and the opposition group as a legitimate force of the people. In discourse practice, the media constructs narratives with production strategies involving symbolism, emotional narratives, and intertextual support. Socially, the discourse constructed reflects an alignment with the narrative of the people's revolution and rejects the legitimacy of authoritarian power. Thus, the media does not merely reflect reality but actively shapes it through its choice of narratives and discourse structures.

Abstract

Islamic devotional music has become a transnational medium of spiritual expression, resonating across cultures and generations through emotional, lyrical, and symbolic depth. This study aims to analyze the semiotic structures embedded in the song Qolbi fi al-Madinah by Maher Zain, applying Louis Hjelmslev's metasemiotic framework. This qualitative research uses a descriptive-interpretative method, drawing data from the song's lyrics, melody, and official music video. The primary data sources are audiovisual materials published by Awakening Music, and the analysis involves segmenting expression and content into four levels: expression form, expression substance, content form, and content substance. Results show that the melody forms a progressive spiritual journey, while the lyrics encode themes of longing, submission, and devotion using ritualistic language. The music video further enhances the narrative through symbolic visuals of journeying toward Madinah, culminating in emotional and theological resolution. The study concludes that Qolbi fi al-Madinah constructs a multidimensional sign system where music, language, and imagery converge to produce mediated religious meaning. These findings contribute to the study of Islamic popular culture, digital da'wah, and semiotic-based religious communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of integrating Islamic Family Law (Fiqh al-Usrah) into Muslim community education within minority contexts in contemporary Japan. Positioned in the interdisciplinary intersection of Islamic Education Studies and Islamic Legal Studies, it explores how legal and ethical principles of Islamic family life are transmitted amid public misconceptions of Islam, linguistic and cultural barriers, and differing levels of individual religious commitment. Using a socio-legal qualitative design with thematic analytical techniques, the research draws on primary data obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation of Muslim community activities, complemented by secondary scholarly  sources. Fieldwork was conducted in Tokyo and Ibaraki between July and August 2024, involving Japanese converts, migrant Muslim families, and mosque administrators. Thematic analysis reveals two dominant patterns: first, families who experience positive religious transformation through strong community engagement; and second, those whose Islamic identity weakens due to secular environments and cultural pressures. The integration process is supported by individual agency, the active role of mosques and Muslim organizations, and culturally embedded religious expression, including arts-based initiatives. Conversely, limited access to formal Islamic education and the socio-cultural  dominance of the non-Muslim majority remain persistent challenges. This study contributes to scholarly discourse on the contextual integration of Islamic law and education in minority contexts. It underscores the importance of systematic, community-based strategies to strengthen Islamic family identity and enhance Muslim minorities' constructive participation in Japanese society.

Abstract

This study explores how the media construct social actor representations in the international conflict discourse between US President, Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, during their tense meeting at the White House in February 2025. Employing Theo van Leeuwen's (2013) Social Actor Representation model within the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, the study examines six selected news texts from Al-Ghad and BBC News Arabic. Using a qualitative approach and interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), this research identifies key strategies of inclusion and exclusion used by each media outlet to position the two political figures. The findings reveal contrasting ideological patterns: Al-Ghad activates Trump as a dominant figure while marginalizing Zelensky through passivation and negative categorization; conversely, BBC News Arabic emphasizes Zelensky's agency while softening Trump’s image through passivization and nominalization. This study contributes to media discourse analysis by highlighting how ideological orientations influence the representation of global political actors and shape public perception. It also underlines the role of linguistic strategies in reproducing power relations in international conflict narratives.
