Abstract

Abstract

Evidently, the quantum of the general and sectoral impacts of growing trends of Ghana- Nigeria bilateral trade has been a phenomenon of mixed feelings. To some analysts the relationship has been positive, to others it is challenging. The purpose of this research therefore, tries to evaluate the influencing factors of Nigeria-Ghana trade in merchandize products through the gravity model of trade from 2008-2019. The results showed that the real exchange rate had a small but significant positive impact on the bilateral trade between Ghana and Nigeria, but more importantly, it had a positive impact on the Nigerian economy. The study again discovered a positive correlation between the size of the economy between Ghana and Nigeria and the flow of bilateral trade. This shows that trade improves as the GDP between these two countries increases or decreases. The market size or population of both countries exhibited a strong positive impact on trade flows and this is consistent with the theoretical foundation. The study is unique because it is the first to exclusively study and empirically investigate the trend of Nigeria-Ghana bilateral trade relation through the Newtonian gravity model.

Abstract

The challenge of zero poverty by 2030 is difficult to achieve amidst global uncertainty which has an impact on the domestic economy through a decrease in social budgets and a decrease in purchasing power which makes the domestic economy move slowly. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has discussed the role of banking in alleviating poverty both directly and indirectly through industrialization, MSMEs and increasing productivity which has a multiplier effect on increasing employment and reducing poverty. Challenges regarding the link between the bank and non-bank financial industry to poverty alleviation are becoming increasingly high due to increasing global uncertainty in the last decade which has had an impact on the domestic economy. This research aims to analyze the influence of banking credit (in this study using MSME credit) and People's Business Credit (KUR) as government representatives in helping business actors to improve their businesses by accessing credit with low interest on poverty alleviation in Indonesia. The research combines time series data in this study, namely the 2017-2022 period and cross section data collected from 34 provinces in Indonesia using the Panel Feasible Generalized Squared (FGLS) approach. The research results show a contradiction between people's business credit and credit to MSMEs, where people's business credit cannot alleviate poverty while credit to MSMEs is effective in reducing poverty rates. The research implication is that financial sector development can be oriented towards alleviating poverty by implementing policies that support financial system stability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of liquidity in promoting patent-based innovation in the 10 countries with the highest innovation rates during the period 2012-2021. Using secondary data from the World Development Indicators (WDI), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS), this study applies panel data regression method with Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) approach to identify the influence of economic variables on the number of patents. The independent variables analyzed include equity x high technology, credit x high technology, industrial value added, exports, and liquidity. The results show that high-tech-based equity and credit have a significant influence on increasing the number of patents, while exports and liquidity do not show a meaningful influence. Value-added was also shown to have a significant contribution to innovation. These findings indicate that funding stability and long-term investment in research and development (R&D) determine innovation success more than the level of liquidity of the firm. Therefore, government policies and funding strategies should focus on improving access to high-tech-based financing as well as incentivizing R&D activities to foster a sustainable innovation ecosystem.

Abstract

Since a few studies have analysed the long-run impact of monetary policy, this study aims to contribute to this gap by revisiting the Schumpeterian finance-innovation nexus and examining the influence of monetary policy, as well as the mediating function of bank lending, on technological innovation across Asian economies. This study employs a fixed-effect model (FEM) to analyse a cross-country dataset of Asian economies from 2002 to 2023. The finding reveals the direct and indirect correlation between monetary policy and innovation, as determined through mediating regression analysis. Furthermore, our study offers empirical evidence supporting a correlation between financial development and national innovation. This finding holds across several primary, robustness, and endogeneity analyses. Furthermore, this study also found that the direct and indirect effects of monetary policy on national innovation are more pronounced in upper-middle- and high-income countries. This study confirms that enhanced bank lending, facilitated by appropriate monetary policy, has a favourable and statistically significant impact on national innovation.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Indonesia's external Debt (ULN), gross domestic product (GDP), and exchange rate (ER) using quarterly data from 2011Q1 to 2025Q2. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method tests long-run cointegration, followed by an Error Correction Model (ECM) to capture short-run dynamics. The selected ARDL (1, 0, 2) model confirms a long-term relationship among external Debt, GDP, and the exchange rate. In the short run, the exchange rate has a significant impact, while GDP does not. The negative and considerable error correction term (ECT) indicates the presence of an adjustment mechanism toward equilibrium. Impulse response analysis reveals that external debt responds strongly to exchange rate shocks, and variance decomposition identifies exchange rate fluctuations as the primary contributor to debt variation. Policy recommendations include diversifying foreign debt portfolios, strengthening foreign exchange reserves, and enhancing fiscal–monetary coordination to mitigate exchange rate risks and improve long-term debt management.
