Abstract

Gastritis is a common digestive disorder in adults with irregular lifestyles and eating patterns. This qualitative case study collected data through four traditional examination methods: observation (Wang), hearing and smell (Wen), interviews (Wen), and palpation (Qie), complemented by documentation. The participant, a 31-year-old male with heartburn, received six sessions of acupuncture therapy. Based on the examination results, a diagnosis of Deficient Spleen and Cold Stomach Syndrome was made. The evaluation showed positive progress, with a significant reduction in heartburn, accompanied by an improvement in appetite, and the elimination of bloating and nausea. This case study is expected to provide additional material to enrich the knowledge of acupuncture students. For future researchers, this report can serve as a reference for treating stomach pain with an acupuncture approach. For the wider community, these findings reinforce acupuncture as an effective and safe therapeutic modality for functional stomach disorders, in addition to available conventional treatment options.

Abstract

Background: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease commonly characterized by symptoms such as frequent headaches, joint pain, and occasional body swelling. Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine therapy, has been identified as a possible alternative for managing symptoms in SLE patients, especially for those seeking relief from the side effects of conventional treatments. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture, a minimally invasive therapy, in addressing chronic and complex complaints in a SLE patient. Case analysis: A case study was conducted on a 23-year-old woman diagnosed with SLE presenting complaints of frequent headaches, joint pain, and occasional body swelling. Data were collected through observation, hearing (auscultation)/smelling (olfaction) assessment, interview, and palpation. The patient underwent 12 acupuncture sessions with assessments conducted before and after therapy, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) examination, abdominal ultrasound, chest X-ray, and laboratory tests. Result: Following acupuncture therapy, the patient’s headaches were resolved, joint pain diminished, and swelling subsided. Conclusion: Acupuncture can be an effective supportive therapy and a safe option for reducing various symptoms in SLE patients.

Abstract

Sciatica is a lumbosacral radicular pain condition that often leads to functional limitations and decreased quality of life. Acupuncture with electrical stimulation is one of the non-pharmacological therapies used in the management of sciatica. The dense–disperse mode of electroacupuncture is reported to provide a more stable analgesic effect through alternating low- and high-frequency stimulation. This study aimed to describe the benefits of acupuncture care using dense–disperse electrical stimulation in reducing pain among sciatica patients at BSA Acupuncture Clinic, Depok. This study employed a descriptive design involving sciatica patients who received acupuncture therapy with dense–disperse electrical stimulation based on standard acupuncture protocols. Pain reduction was evaluated during the treatment period. The results indicated that acupuncture care with dense–disperse electrical stimulation contributed to improvement in pain complaints among sciatica patients. This therapy may serve as a safe and effective non-pharmacological alternative for pain management in sciatica cases in clinical acupuncture settings.

Abstract

Right-sided abdominal pain caused by gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) is a common clinical condition that can significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Conventional management generally focuses on pharmacological therapy and surgical intervention, but these approaches may present limitations such as adverse effects and high medical costs. Therefore, complementary therapeutic approaches such as acupuncture have gained increasing attention as potential supportive treatments. This study aimed to describe the implementation and clinical outcomes of acupuncture care in reducing right-sided abdominal pain in a patient with cholecystitis treated at a therapy center in Banjarmasin. The research employed a qualitative case study design involving a 45-year-old female patient diagnosed with cholecystitis. Data were collected using a structured client data sheet based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic framework, including observation (Wang), listening and smelling (Wen), inquiry (Wen), and palpation (Qie). The participant received six acupuncture therapy sessions over a one-week period. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by comparing clinical findings before and after treatment. The results showed significant improvement in both subjective complaints and objective clinical indicators. The patient initially presented with severe right upper abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, decreased appetite, bitter taste in the mouth, and radiating pain to the scapula. After six therapy sessions, the main complaint of abdominal pain disappeared, accompanying symptoms decreased markedly, and physical examination findings improved. Ultrasonography also indicated the disappearance of previously detected gallstones. These findings suggest that acupuncture therapy may contribute to symptom reduction and functional improvement in patients with cholecystitis.

Abstract

Unilateral facial paralysis, also known as Miantan, refers to paralysis affecting one side of the face. One type of Miantan is Shi Syndrome, which is caused by pathogenic factors such as wind-cold and wind-heat. These factors lead to obstruction of the flow of Qi in the Yang Ming and Shao Yang meridians, resulting in a “wind-phlegm” syndrome. This condition manifests with various associated symptoms, including weakness of the facial muscles, and may lead to the characteristic clinical features of Bell’s palsy. Bell’s palsy is a peripheral facial nerve paralysis characterized by weakness or paralysis on one side of the face due to dysfunction of the seventh cranial nerve. This condition is characterized by inability to close the eyes completely, drooping of the mouth corner, and facial asymmetry. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture care in patients with Bell’s palsy at the Integrative department of St. Carolus Borromeus Hospital Kupang. This study used a qualitative case study design. The participant was a 35-year-old female patient diagnosed with left-sided Bell’s palsy. Data were collected using acupuncture diagnostic methods including observation (Wang), listening and smelling (Wen), questioning (Wen), and palpation (Qie). Acupuncture therapy was administered based on the established diagnosis of disease and syndrome. The results showed facial asymmetry on the left side, inability to raise the forehead, and incomplete eyelid closure. After several acupuncture therapy sessions, improvements were observed in facial muscle function, eyelid closure ability, and facial expressions. This study concludes that acupuncture therapy can improve facial nerve function and accelerate recovery in patients with Bell’s palsy.

Abstract

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is a condition in which blood pressure is lower than 90/60 mmHg or low enough to cause symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Acupuncture therapy offers an approach to addressing low blood pressure or hypotension without the side effects of pharmaceutical blood-pressure-raising medications. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for hypotension patients at Bale Terapi Datu (TCM Center NTB) in West Lombok Regency. This single case study involved eight therapy sessions with a 31-year-old female participant who had been experiencing hypotension for the past two weeks. Data collection included observation, interviews, hearing, smell, and touch, following Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic standards. Acupuncture points were chosen based on a diagnosis of qi and xue deficiency, with needle manipulation focused on tonification. After eight therapy sessions, the participant experienced significant improvement in blood pressure from 70/80 mmHg to 100/80 mmHg. Additional symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, constipation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and restlessness have significantly decreased, and the participant’s physical condition has improved. Tongue examination revealed increased redness, and the pulse, which was initially weak, became more stable, indicating a smoother flow of liver qi and blood. The acupuncture treatment provided was effective in treating low blood pressure or hypotension caused by qi and blood deficiency by improving qi flow and increasing blood volume and circulation, thereby improving physical condition and reducing the symptoms experienced by the participant.

Abstract

Delays in submitting BPJS claims are a crucial challenge in the hospital financing system, having a direct impact on cash flow and service quality. At Jannah Hospital in Serang City, this problem is chronic, with pending claims reaching hundreds of cases and receivables value of hundreds of millions of rupiah. This study aims to examine the coordination strategy between work units in preventing delays in submitting BPJS claims, using Henry Mintzberg's coordination theory approach which includes five mechanisms: mutual adjustment, direct supervision, work process standardization, output standardization, and skill standardization. The methodology used is a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document studies. The research informants totaled 21 people consisting of structural officials, medical staff, administration, casemix, and other related units. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis methods to identify coordination patterns and key barriers. The results of the study showed weak coordination systems across units as the main cause of delays. It was found that strengthening direct supervision and standardization of work processes is a key strategy. This study recommends the establishment of cross-unit SOPs, improved staff skills training, and integrated reporting systems as solutions to speed up and streamline the claims process.
