Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan bahan ajar BIPA bermuatan budaya agraris untuk penutur asing tingkat pemula. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah mengembangkan bahan ajar berdasar-kan aspek materi pembelajaran, organisasi penyajian, penggunaan bahasa, dan tampilan. Metode penelitian pengembangan ini menggunakan model R2D2 yang terdiri atas fokus penetapan, fokus perancangan, dan fokus desiminasi. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, telaah doku-men, diskusi kelompok terarah, dan angket. Instrumen pengumpulan data menggunakan pedoman observasi, pedoman telaah dokumen, pedoman diskusi kelompok terarah, dan angket validasi bahan ajar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahan ajar yang dikembangkan layak untuk diimplementasikan sesuai penilaian dan saran validator.    Development of BIPA teaching materials with agrarian culture for beginner foreign speakers   Abstract: This study aims to develop BIPA teaching materials containing agrarian culture for beginner-level foreign speakers. The main focus of this research is developing teaching materials based on aspects of learning materials, presentation organization, language use, and display. This development research method uses the R2D2 model, which consists of a determination focus, a design focus, and a dissemination focus. Data collection techniques used observation, document review, focus group discussions, and questionnaires. The data collection instrument used an observation guide, a document review guide, a focus group discussion guide, and a teaching material validation questionnaire. The results showed that the teaching materials developed were feasible to be implemented according to the validator's assessment and suggestions.

Abstract

Kabupaten Jember memiliki potensi pengembangan pariwisata olahraga minat khusus. Salah satu olahraga yang memiliki potensi tersebut adalah Shorinji Kempo. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberikan pemahaman mengenai pariwisata olahraga minat khusus dan menangkap potensi pengembangan pariwisata olahraga minat khusus pada komunitas Shorinji Kempo Mangli Jember. Metide yang dilakukan dengan sosialisasi, diskusi, dan praktik pembuatan paket wisata. Materi yang telah diberikan memberikan pengetahuan baru bagi peserta, bahwa olahraga Kempo memiliki nilai tambah dengan hadirnya pariwisata minat khusus. Abstract

This study aimed to describe the types and functions of speaking conducted by the three intership students as the hotel receptionists. To cope with the previous goal, case study was used as the research design. Additionally, observation through audio recording and interviews were implemented to collect the data. The finding of this study are: 1) one type of speaking was found which is dialogue and; 2) six functions of speaking discovered which are exchanging personal information, expressing future intentions, giving directions, giving advice & making suggestions, describing, and interacting in social situations. By practicing the type and functions above, the students were able to demonstrate the functional competence of speaking to meet their duty as hotel receptionists which is bridging good communication between the hotel and the guest. In addition, by highlighting these findings, it is expected that the data can be used by the English Study Program to prepare the material for the speaking course before succeeding students complete the internship program as hotel receptionists.

Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in English Language Teaching (ELT) can be seen as both a benefit and a potential threat, depending on how it is used and implemented. On the one hand, AI technology has the potential to make language learning more efficient and effective, by providing personalized feedback and practice exercises tailored to the different student’s needs and learning style. By conducting an in-depth analysis of the existing literature on this topic, the writers aim at gaining a deeper understanding of the ways in which AI is being used to enhance the learning of English as a foreign language. Moreover, the literature review has involved an extensive search, mostly, for relevant scholarly articles, books, and additional sources that explore the intersection of AI and ELT. Besides, this review has also resulted a deeper understanding of the benefits and threats of using AI in ELT.

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of using game on the seventh-grade students’ tense achievement at SMPN 2 Balung-Jember. The primary data of this research were collected from the students’ scores of tense test. The primary data were collected from the post-test to compare the two different groups after treatment and analyzed the result by using independent sample T-Test (SPSS). Based on the calculation, the result of this research showed that there was a significant effect of using game on the seventh-grade students’ tense achievement. It was proved by the value of significant column of t-test table by using SPSS software, and the result was 0.045 which was lower than 0.05 (significant level of 5%). The research results proved that there was a significant effect of using game on the seventh-year students’ tense achievement at SMPN 2 Balung-Jember. Therefore, it is recommended for the English teacher to use game as an alternative technique in teaching tenses.

Abstract

This recent research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of textual enhancement on the students’ grammar achievement, in this case passive voice. Two kinds of instruction were implemented to two groups. The first instruction was enhanced instruction which consisted of textual enhancement and rule explanation, and the other instruction was explicit only instruction which consisted of rule explanation only. The study used quasi-experimental research design. A test was used in the pre-test and post-test to get the students’ score as the main data to be compared. From the result of the test analysis, finding shows that textual enhancement contributed a significant effect on the students’ passive voice achievement. Moreover, from the result of the questionnaire as the supporting instrument, the textual enhancement was more effective to be implemented to those which were considered as the low achievers than those considered as the high achievers. The students were more aware, focus, and easier in recognizing the pattern of passive voice

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis daya saing destinasi wisata alam Puncak Badean menggunakan model Dwyer dan Kim. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data melalui observasi dan wawancara semi terstruktur. Analisis data menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelima elemen daya saing meliputi core resources, supporting resources, destination management, demand conditions, dan situational conditions, telah teridentifikasi, tetapi tingkat pengembangannya belum merata dengan baik di destinasi wisata Puncak Badean, meskipun masih memerlukan penguatan pada aspek infrastruktur, promosi digital, dan sumber daya manusia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan elemen terkuat daya saing destinasi wisata Puncak Badean adalah core resoursces dan elemen terlemah adalah supporting resources. Temuan ini penting sebagai dasar penyusunan strategi pengembangan daya saing destinasi wisata berbasis masyarakat yang berkelanjutan di destinasi wisata Puncak Badean.

Abstract

This study explores the pivotal role of language in fostering cross-cultural appreciation among Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) awardees. We examined the experiences of two awardees of prestigious international exchange programs to understand how language acquisition and use influenced their cultural perceptions and interactions. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted in-depth interviews and administered surveys to gather data on the participants’ language learning journeys, intercultural communications, and shifts in cultural perspectives. The selected participants represented diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds and completed exchanges in countries where they needed to navigate a foreign language. Our findings reveal that language proficiency significantly enhanced the awardees’ ability to appreciate and engage with host cultures. Key themes emerged, including: 1) the role of language as a gateway to deeper cultural understanding; 2) Challenges and breakthroughs in intercultural communication; 3) The impact of idiomatic expressions on cultural insight; 4) Changes in self-perception and cultural identity through language learning; and 5) The development of empathy and cultural relativism. Quantitative data indicated a strong positive correlation between language proficiency and measures of cultural appreciation. Qualitative analysis provided rich insights into the nuanced ways language shaped the awardees’ cross-cultural experiences. This research contributes to our understanding of the intricate relationship between language and culture in international education contexts. It offers valuable implications for enhancing student exchange programs and promoting global citizenship through targeted language and cultural learning strategies.

Abstract

Environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly significant in tourism education. However, incorporating ecoliteracy into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses remains limited within vocational settings. This qualitative case study explored how English for Tourism lecturers at an Indonesian vocational college perceive ecoliteracy integration and the challenges they encounter. Three lecturers participated in semi-structured interviews, which were supplemented with analysis of course materials. The results showed four positive perspectives: ecoliteracy enhances practical learning, encourages a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness between society, economy, and environment, aligns with industry sustainability expectations, and develops 21st-century skills. Nonetheless, three major challenges were identified: difficulty aligning the curriculum, limited time for developing materials, and insufficient content knowledge in sustainability education. The study highlights that although lecturers see the value of ecoliteracy, institutional support, such as curriculum reform, resource availability, and ongoing professional development, is crucial for effective integration. These insights contribute to understanding teacher cognition in ESP and have implications for policy and professional growth in vocational training.
