Abstract

The purpose of the research paper, "Enhancing Students' Reading Comprehension Through the Scanning Technique," was to look at the usage of scanning techniques in improving students' reading comprehension at SMP Berea Tondano. This study included twenty-eight eighth-grade pupils. The research approach used was classroom action research. The information was acquired from a variety of sources, including observations at each cycle meeting and a questionnaire. The average scores in cycle two (Y1 = 18,5) were higher than in cycle one (Y1 = 5,95), according to the findings of this study. Furthermore, according to the results of the students' survey, 77 percent of students chose "agree" and 33 percent chose "very agree" to employ scanning approach in comprehending narative texts. This research is expected to aid in the teaching of English. Furthermore, it is advised that future scholars look at the usage of scanning techniques in other books. Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the improvement of students’ vocabulary by using Last Man Standing Game at Seventh grade of SMP Kristen Malak. This research used pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the SMP Kristen Malak. The sample of this research was the seventh grade students which consisted of 11 students. The researcher used format multiple choice and fill in the blank test as the instrument of this research. Based on the research findings, it showed that using Last Man Standing Game was effective to increase students’ vocabulary. It is proved by mean score of post-test. The mean score before and after treatment (35,63 became 65,09) with the t-test value was greater than t-table 13,97 > 1.812. The researcher concluded that using Last Man Standing Game could increase students’ vocabulary and could be one good technique in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

The short story is effective way in improving students’ reading ability at grade VIII     SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of short story in improving students’ reading ability at Grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon.         The research design employed in this research was true experimental. The                 population of this research was the students’ at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon        and the sample was 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The result of data analysis showed that the experimental group got a mean score 84.25 than the control group got mean score 39.5. It means that, the mean score of the students in the experimental group was higher than for those in the control group. It showed that there is a significant improvement on students’ reading ability through short story and it indicated that short story is effective to improve students’ reading ability at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon. Regarding to the research findings, it is recommended to English teachers to use short story to improve the students’ reading ability. For the future researchers, it is also recommended to use the results of this research as a reference in employing similar research on the same or different language skills in different setting.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to increase students’ vocabulary by using songs techniques of SMP Negeri 1 Siau Timur Selatan. The method used in this study was the pre-experimental method. This research was carried out in one class, namely the seventh grade with a total of 21 students. The students are taught using the songs and they are That is a Window, Things in the classroom and My Classroom. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. Mean score formula was used in analyzing data. The result showed that the pre-test score is 4,47 while the post-test score is 7,57. That means, Song is the right technique to use in increasing students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

The study, "An Study Of Positive Politeness Technique In Moana Movie," focuses on politeness in relation to Brown and Levinson's positive politeness approach. This study was undertaken with the intention of describing the effective politeness technique used in the Moana movie. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used. The conversations in the Moana movie script served as the source of the data for this investigation. The analysis of the data revealed three effective politeness strategies in the film Moana. The statistics are as follows: 13 pique the listener's interest more, 4 exaggerate, and 4 make promises or offers. Also, the most commonly employed tactic in Moana's film is to heighten listener interest because she is the primary character

Abstract

The background of this research was based on the student’s perception on pronunciation difficulties. The purpose of this research is to find out perception about difficulties in pronuncing words. This study was carried out at SMA Negeri 3 Tondano. The subject of this study was the 11th grade of science departement students in the academic year of 2022/2023. This research used qualitative research through questionnaires design. The data of this research were collected by using likert scale. The result of this research showed that they exist several problems that students encounter related to pronunciation learning were difficulties in word stress, fluency, and memorizing words. The results above show that there are still many difficulties faced by students in learning pronunciation, and several solutions can be made by giving students the opportunity to tell about personal experiences to facilitate each student's English pronunciation. They are also given the task of memorizing English words that are used every day so as to facilitate pronunciation in English

Abstract

This research is titled "An Analysis of Politeness Maxims Used by the Main Character in Coco Movie," this study focuses on maxims related to the politeness principle by Leech. As a result, the researchers create a problem as follows: What kinds of maxims are used in the Coco Movie? The researchers employe Leech's Theory to address the question. The descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. The discussions in the Coco Movie script are the source of this study's data. After examining the data, it is discovered that the Movie Coco contains five maxims. The following are the statistics: 9 tact maxims, 5 generosity maxims, 1 modesty maxim, 4 approbation maxims, and 5 agreement maxims. Furthermore, tact maxim is the most frequently used maxim in Coco’s movie since the main character in this movie is concerned more with giving benefit to people around him, by using the tact maxim the speaker shows respect to the hearer by employing the tact maxim.

Abstract

This research aims to find out a comparative score between multiple choice and cloze-test toward student’s reading comprehension achievement at SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu. This research used quantitative research with the type of comparative research that used the test method. The subject in this research were the first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu. The data collection technique used two types of tests, first is multiple-choice objective consist of 20 number and second is cloze-test consist of 20 number. The writer used the IBM SPSS Statistics Program and the Independent Sample T-Test formula to analyse the data. The results showed that the average score of students' reading on the multiple choice test was 81.40 while the average score on the cloze-test was 58.00. This value indicates that the multiple choice obtains higher results than the cloze test. It is proved that the significance value of sig. (2-tailed) is <0.001 or has a value of 0.000. That is, sig. value (2-tailed) < 0.05. According to the independent sample t-test, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that the multiple choice test is better to assess students' reading comprehension achievement in first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu.

Abstract

This study looks into the use of crossword puzzles to help pupils build their vocabulary. The research subject for this study was decided upon in class VII b at SMP Negeri 3 Tondano. There are 20 students in this class. The pre-experimental design of this study included pre- and post-tests for a single group. Scores from the pre- and post-tests following therapy were used to collect the data. The minimum and maximum scores in this investigation were 50 and 90, respectively. The results showed that the pre-test mean score was 63 and the post-test mean score was 78.5. It indicates that the post-test result is better than the pre-test. As a result, it can be said that teaching vocabulary using crossword puzzles differs significantly from other methods. Thus, it can be said that crossword puzzles can help pupils in SMP Negeri 3 Tondano's seventh grade increase their vocabulary. This demonstrates how crossword puzzles can be used by English teachers to expand their pupils' vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying and describing the idiomatic expressions found in Taylor Swift’s songs on the Evermore album. This study was a descriptive qualitative study that used note-taking and literature review as the means of collecting the data. The primary data of this study were taken from the lyrics of 4 songs in Taylor Swift’s Evermore album. The researcher also used secondary data such as academic articles, books, and various websites in conducting this study. The data were then analyzed using the content analysis technique proposed by Miles and Huberman. The result showed that there are 21 idioms found in Swift’s song lyrics in the Evermore album. Based on its types, there are 2 proverb idioms, 8 phrasal compound idioms, 9 tournures idioms, and 2 simile idioms. Those idiomatic expressions are used to express the problem in life and the problems in love faced by the character in the songs.
