Abstract

This study describes conflict resolution using the theory of symbolic interactionism by Herbert Blumer and George Herbert Mead. The theory of symbolic interactionism contains three main substances, namely mind, self and society. The self-concept put forward has three criteris, namely emotions, attitudes, beliefs, and values. Self-concept is an attempt to understand and interpret the actions of others through symbols, so that an agreement or compromise occurs. Conflict resolution is an effort to understand and interpret actions based on the symbols of conflict actors, so that an agreement can be reached, thereby creating conflict resolution. The discussion of conflict resolution uses the theory of symbolic interactionism by Herbert Blumer and George Herbert Mead, that self and self-concept are conflict resolution construction models that prioritize discussion and negotiation.

Abstract

This paper discusses the phenomenological approach in the context of conflict resolution. Phenomenology transforms the traditional view of conflict by delving into a profound understanding of its roots, values, emotions, and the perspectives of individuals involved. In this approach, conflict is seen as a social phenomenon involving individual or group awareness, empathy, sympathy, and collective consciousness. The importance of understanding subjective meanings and individual experiences in conflict is emphasized as the key to effective conflict resolution. The conflict resolution process from a phenomenological perspective involves steps of identification, diagnosis, and treatment designed to uncover and comprehend the conflict's roots comprehensively. The role of the subjects in this process is crucial, as they must possess the ability to empathize, see from various perspectives, and facilitate effective communication. In conflict resolution methods based on the phenomenological approach, reduction also becomes a key element, involving efforts to cleanse understanding from biases and assumptions before taking action. Introspection is also vital, helping subjects become more aware of their roles and contributions in the conflict. The phenomenological approach enables us to resolve conflicts in a more profound, holistic, and sustainable manner. With a deeper understanding of conflict's roots and the emotions involved, we can develop more effective solutions and integrate various perspectives contributing to the conflict.

Abstract

he eruption of Mount Semeru has caused significant material and physical losses, as well as created uncertainty and crises across various sectors, both economic and social. The impacts of lava flows, volcanic ash, and hot debris during the eruption not only damaged property and infrastructure but also destroyed social capital which is crucial for community resilience. The resulting economic uncertainty has raised concerns about the future and hindered efforts to revitalize affected sectors. Communities that have lost jobs become vulnerable to poverty, and the loss of infrastructure slows economic recovery. Social capital, which includes social networks, norms, and trust among community members, plays a critical role in the recovery process. This research aims to describe the relationship between social capital and economic resilience among survivors of the eruption in Lumajang, East Java. The research employs a descriptive method, with data collected through questionnaires and structured interviews. The results show that communication and social involvement among survivors remain limited and tend to focus on the family circle. Participation in community groups and the giving and receiving of support from social networks are still low. However, involvement in community groups positively affects the frequency of participation, requests for and provision of assistance, and reception of various types of support. Social support is considered very important and beneficial in daily life, especially in the context of disaster recovery. The study concludes that a deep understanding of how to strengthen social capital and integrate it into economic recovery strategies is an urgent need to create a supportive social environment for sustainable and resilient economic recovery following a natural disaster.

Abstract

Distance learning has become a global trend in the field of education, but conflicts have emerged as a significant challenge in this context. This article outlines potential conflicts that may arise in distance learning, such as technical conflicts, physical/intellectual limitations, student-teacher relationships, student-to-student interactions, conflicts with educational institutions, as well as psychological and evaluation-related conflicts. Using the perspective of communication technology theory, this study demonstrates how communication media play a role in influencing conflicts and their resolutions. The theory of medium richness illustrates the richness of media in delivering information and facilitating interactions, which impact conflict resolution. The sociotechnical systems (STS) approach emphasizes the importance of integrating technology, humans, and the environment in addressing conflicts. The theory of media ecology (ME) illustrates how media influence individual perceptions and behaviors. Conflict resolution strategies based on communication technology theory encompass effective communication, technology training, guidelines and procedures, media monitoring, and increased social interaction. Resolving conflicts in distance learning is crucial for enhancing learning effectiveness, student motivation, student-teacher relationships, mental well-being, and the credibility of educational institutions. While technological strategies are important, human and environmental factors also play a role in preventing and resolving conflicts. In conclusion, conflict resolution strategies based on communication technology theory can assist educational institutions in creating a more positive distance learning experience for students and teachers, while considering both technological and human-environment aspects.

The informants of this research consisted of 20 people, both from the support and contra of the cement factory. The data collection used unstructured interviews. Data analysis used three steps from Miles and Huberman. The results of this study indicate (1) human characters in conflict are divided into three categories, namely the id, ego and superego, which in Fisher's language are also referred to as stages of conflict; (2) the cement factory conflict in Rembang, seen from the emotional pattern, contains three group characteristics, namely the silent group, the moving group and the resisting group. The conclusion of this study showed that each conflict will experience escalation depending on the pattern of emotions. The emotions increase along with the contradictory productivity of conflict issues.
