Abstract

Knowledge about environmental based diseases prevention, such as acute respiratory infection (ARI), should be given to high-risk groups, e.g. elementary school children. Counseling can achieve its maximum results if the media used is suitable with the target audience. For elementary school students, one of the appropriate media is those that will facilitate them in receiving the health messages given. One of those media is pictorial card named "smart card". The research is a quasi experiment with non-randomized control group pre-test post-test design. The study subjects consisted of 41 grade 4 and 5 students of Pingit Elementary School as the experiment group, and 41 grade 4 and 5 students of Karangrejo elemnetary school as the control group. Results of the statistical analysis using independent t-test at 95 % significance level, obtained a p-value of 0,015. It indicates that the difference in knowledge improvement between those two groups are significant. To conclude, the use of "smart card" in counseling activity influences students’ knowledge about ARI prevention, because the media supports the delivery of of the counseling messages to be received properly by the students.

Abstract

Waste sorting has to be implemented at initial waste generators/producers, including schools, such as islamic boarding school (IBS) or pesantren. Most of students in Krapyak IBS have low knowledge and inappropriate practice of waste sorting. One of the efforts to overcome this problem is by conducting health promotion. This research was aimed to know the effect of sortingcard game as the media of health promotion towards Krapyak IBS students’ knowledge and practice on waste sorting. The study was a quasi-experiment with non-equivalent control groupdesign. The study subjects were 52 students aged 13-18 years old. They were divided into 2 groups, i.e. 26 were assingned into treatment group and the other 26 into the control group. Statistical analysis by using independent t-test and Mann-Whitney at ?=0,05 show that the knowledge and practice scores between pre-test and post-test are statistically significant (the obtained p-values were 0,043 and 0,040, respectively). By using sorting card game, students’ knowledgeincreased 55,14 % and the practice increased 67,23 %.

Abstract

In 2008, The Department of Environmental Health of Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Health, to conduct the selection process on the new enrolments from PMDP entry-pathway employed three types of tests, i.e. TOEFL, Academic Potential Test, and Eysenck's Personality Inventory. This research was aimed to analyze the ability of the tests for predicting students' achievement in the form of GPA semester I and || along their first year by doing a cohort study. There were 70 students eligible for the analysis and SPSS for windows software was used to do the analysis. The results show that TOEFL may still be used as one of the se- lection instrument because the yielded scores had moderate relationship with GPAS. Meanwhile, Academic Potential test is strongly suggested to be kept as the primary instrument because its strong power in predicting student achieve- ment. On the other hand, personality assessment is advised to be dropped since its relationship with GPA was too weak.
