Abstract

When language is used in communication events, there also as an ideological distiction and a desire to dominate each other among its users. Because language is never separated from ideological motives, including domination motives. Domination occurs due to the existence of a strong group as the dominating party and a weak group as the dominated party with language as an instrument to achieve it. Symbolic violence marked by language forms that represent language crimes is a realization of the practice of domination. Through symbolic violence, the dominant party imposes its ideological influence on the dominant group. The practice of domination through symbolic violence can be found in the dialogue text of the antagonist in the film Better Days《少年的你》by Derek Tsang which is used as a data source. The patterned language forms used by the antagonist to attack the main character are used as data. After the data is identified and classified, it is analyzed through a qualitative approach using the concept of Bourdieu's theory of symbolic violence. The results of the analysis are presented through a descriptive method to obtain a detailed and concrete picture of the practice of domination of antagonist characters through symbolic violence. The results of the analysis show that symbolic violence, which represents the practice of domination, is realized through forms of language that have functioned as the language of punishment, the language of intimidation, the language of prohibition, the language of accusation, the language of insults, and language of command. Cultural capital (attitudes and lifestyles) is the most dominant capital that represents the attitudes and behavior of antagonists to produce and reproduce texts to legitimize their domination. Based on the frequency of occurrence, forbidden language is the most productive form of language, and accusation language is the language form with the least frequency of occurrence.

Abstract

This investigation is about cultural adaptation of international students learning Mandarin language in Zhejiang, China, through a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data from a questionnaire (n=32) were combined with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, using an explanatory sequential design. Quantitative findings showed that integration was the most preferred adaptation strategy (M=4.09), with assimilation, separation, and marginalization being the next most preferred in descending order. Correlation analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between integration and learning outcomes (r=0.717 p<0.001), meaning that students who not only kept touch with their home culture but also actively engaged with the host culture were more likely to demonstrate high levels of participation in the classroom, confidence in communication, and motivation for learning. Assimilation was also found to be significantly positively correlated, whereas marginalization was negatively related to learning outcomes. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data accentuates the role of intercultural contact, the use of good adaptive techniques, and identity negotiation in students' learning experiences. They also indicated that mixing with various peers and using language actively help cultural adjustment and language development. This study based on acculturation theory and sociocultural perspectives, shows that cultural adaptation plays a major role in Mandarin language learning effectiveness. The results add to the literature by focusing on the importance of multicultural classroom interaction and offering teaching suggestions for enhancing Mandarin language teaching for international students.

Abstract

Films play an important role in shaping public understanding of disability and family identity through visual and emotional representation. However, studies discussing children’s identity construction within families with disabilities, particularly deaf-mute families, remain limited. This research aims to analyze the representation of a deaf-mute family and the construction of Mùmù’s identity as the child of a deaf-mute father in the film Mùmù. The study also examines the influence of social groups on the formation of the child’s personal identity. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using scenes, dialogues, gestures, visual elements, and cinematographic techniques as primary data sources. The analysis applied Stuart Hall’s representation theory, Murray Bowen’s family systems theory, and Tajfel’s social identity theory. Data collection was conducted through observation, documentation, and scene classification from the film. The findings reveal that the film represents deaf-mute families in a humane and emotional manner through non-verbal communication, warm lighting, close-up framing, and visual symbolism that emphasize affection and emotional attachment between father and child. Furthermore, family interaction patterns significantly shape Mùmù’s identity through self-differentiation, family projection, and relational triangles. Social identity processes, including self-categorization and social comparison, also influence Mùmù’s perception of himself within both deaf and hearing communities. In conclusion, the film demonstrates that disability is not merely a limitation but also a meaningful space for identity formation, emotional growth, and social belonging.

Abstract

Abstract: The analysis of literary works provides profound insights into human character and experience, while also shedding light on cultural values and social transformations. The research utilizes internet browsing and literature review techniques with data collection, data analysis, and presentation of the analyzed data. The data is analyzed considering David Krech's classification theory of emotions, where the character's emotions are classified based on the theory and connected to the existing conflicts. Through quotes in the film, deep emotional experiences for Jia Xiaoling are depicted. The theory of social emotions and self-awareness can help understand the feeling of embarrassment experienced by Jia. This theory emphasizes the importance of emotional attachment between a child and their mother in shaping the child's emotional development.
