Abstract

Abstract

The research focuses on how the teaching of different faiths was blended into Javanese-Nusantara culture and has created a culture with a peaceful and moderate Islamic image that is different from radical Islam which has generated Is-lamic phobias in many countries. This research examines how Javanese cosmology (syncretism of Hindu - Buddha - Islam) had been translated in social space and built-environment. The second is to describe how the system in Java successfully harmonized different faiths into Javanese culture. This study was a purposeful qualitative study that focused on traditional communities and two prominent existing Kingdoms of Surakarta and Yogyakarta in Java. Observation, in-depth interviews, and reviews on literature and documents of classical authors in Islamic Sufism were conducted to collect and compile data. The results show that the cultural process of Javanese prefers similarities rather than emphasizing differences between faiths. Converting faith from Hindu or Buddha to Islam did not necessarily cause conflicts and hostilities. The study underlined that the Javanese’s understanding of cosmology at the micro and macro level, orientation or qiblah, and spiritual axis found similar mystical knowledge between Islam and the pre-Islam (Hindu-Buddha). This syncretism process created Kejawen culture and moderate Islam in Nusantara. Islam Nusantara is recently used as a paradigm by the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia

Abstract

Suburban areas often experience development pressures, with implications for changing green space into built areas, rural cultures into urban ones, and poverty into prosperity. The development of Buring Kampong (suburban settlement) in Malang City into a tourism kampong, in addition to improving the local economy, must also be able to support environmental quality and community independence. This research used the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach in identifying tangible and intangible assets. The data were collected through field observation, focused group discussion, interviews, and secondary data. Tangible aspects include land use, natural and artificial resources, infrastructure, accessibility, machinery and equipment, and local architecture. Meanwhile, intangible assets include intellectual property, potential branding development, goodwill, software/web, formal and informal organization, social and cultural values, and potential customers. The data obtained were presented descriptively and discussed together, as a triangulation process. The results showed the diversity and breadth of tangible and intangible assets of Baran village, and both of these assets can be directly found in the field and during FGDs and interviews. This research is also an effort to strengthen community engagement and public awareness about their assets, and this activity needs to be continuously improved, to have a better level of community engagement, confidence, social participation, branding, and networking.

Abstract

The Jami Adji Amir Hasanoeddin Mosque symbolizes the development of Islam in the Kingdom of Kutai Kartanegara, which was previously a Hindu kingdom. This research aims to expose the representation of the architectural identity of the Jami Adji Amir Hasanoeddin Mosque with the perspective of Lacan's identity theory, especially the symbolic order stage. This is important to do considering that the symbolic meaning of mosques now needs to be strengthened and re-contextualized in an increasingly globalized community culture, so it requires strengthening identity. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach. Historical data and data on the original state of the building were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews. The analysis process is carried out through a series of identification of the process of identity formation at the mirror stage and symbolic order through the interpretation of the relationship between observation units (history, mosque architectural elements, stakeholders, and related political elements). The results of the study show that the identity of the Jami Adji Amir Hasanoeddin Mosque is as a 'leader' or center for the development of Islam. This is shown by the choice of location, role, and function of the mosque both at the beginning of its existence until the reign of Aji Sultan Muhammad Parikesit, as well as efforts to embrace various social groups through the diversity of architectural elements.
