Abstract

This community service project aimed to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of using English-language YouTube videos to improve listening skills at Package C Community Learning Centers (PKBM) in Banjarmasin City. Listening skills have been identified as a major challenge for students at PKBM due to limited exposure to authentic materials and real-world language. This research utilized a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest format involving 30 students from a local PKBM. The implementation stages included interactive lectures, YouTube video screenings, followed by discussions and question-and-answer sessions, with the effectiveness assessed through pretests and posttests. The quantitative results revealed a significant improvement in listening comprehension, with the average listening score increasing from 82.9 in the pretest to 86.7 in the posttest, reflecting a positive impact of the intervention. In addition to the quantitative results, the qualitative data highlighted high levels of student engagement and motivation throughout the learning process. Many students expressed that the YouTube videos made the content more relatable and enjoyable, which contributed to a deeper understanding of the material. This suggests that the use of YouTube videos is not only effective in enhancing listening skills but also fosters a more interactive and student-centered learning environment, making the learning experience more relevant to the needs of non-formal learners. The study concludes that YouTube videos are a promising and innovative tool for improving English language teaching at PKBM, providing accessible and engaging resources that can bridge the gap between formal and informal learning environments, helping students connect better with the material.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of English conversation videos on the academic listening skills and attitudes of English Language Education (ELE) students. As technology reshapes language education, video-based materials, especially conversation videos, provide authentic language exposure, enhancing comprehension and pragmatic skills. Using a pre-experimental design with pretest-posttest assessments and a Likert-scale questionnaire, the study involved 30 second-year ELE students at the Islamic University of Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari. Results showed a significant improvement in listening skills, with posttest scores rising from a mean of 81.67 to 87.17 (t(29) = 11.36, p < 0.001). Students had positive attitudes towards using videos, noting high motivation and relevance to their future careers. However, while videos helped with comprehension and accent recognition, they were less effective in reducing anxiety or improving test performance. These findings underscore the value of conversation videos in academic listening development and suggest areas for future research on their impact on higher-level listening skills and anxiety management.

Abstract

This research focuses on assessing the influence of mind mapping as a learning strategy on the short-story writing proficiency of junior high school students studying English. In particular, this research examines the extent to which mind mapping affects different components of writing proficiency, such as organization, coherence, and creativity. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, utilizing a purposive sample of 50 students in the eighth grade. The experimental group was instructed through the use of mind mapping techniques, whereas the control group received instruction via conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through pretest and posttest written tasks and analyzed using SPSS to perform both descriptive and inferential statistical procedures. Results obtained from the independent-samples t-test revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s writing performance, with a p-value of 0.029. These results indicate that mind mapping is an effective strategy for improving short-story writing skills among junior high school EFL learners, suggesting its potential for enhancing students' writing abilities in a more engaging and organized way.

Abstract

Parental involvement is widely acknowledged as a key factor in student academic success, particularly in second language acquisition. However, its impact at the university level, especially among pre-service English teachers, remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between parental involvement and English language achievement among first-year English Education students at Universitas Islam Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari Banjarmasin (UNISKA). Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 36 purposively selected participants using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire. The instrument measured both the forms and frequency of parental involvement and students’ self-reported performance in English-related subjects. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation via SPSS 26. Findings indicate that students generally perceive moderate to high levels of parental involvement, especially in providing academic resources, financial support, and attending university-related events. However, involvement in educational decision-making and career discussions was notably low. A significant positive correlation was found between parental involvement and students' academic performance, particularly in aspects such as discipline, assignment completion, and encouragement. Emotional impacts such as increased motivation or reduced anxiety showed more mixed responses. These findings highlight the enduring influence of parental support in higher education and suggest further exploration of its emotional dimensions.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of top-down and bottom-up listening strategies in improving EFL students’ listening comprehension. Listening is a crucial skill in second language acquisition, yet it remains challenging due to limited exposure to authentic input and various processing difficulties. The objective of this study was to examine whether the integration of top-down and bottom-up strategies significantly improves students’ listening achievement. A pre-experimental quantitative design with a one-group pretest–post-test model was employed. The participants were 20 second-year students of the English Education Study Program at Islamic University of Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a listening comprehension test administered as both pretest and post-test, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples comparison. The findings revealed an improvement in students’ listening performance after the treatment. The mean score increased from 82.9 in the pretest to 86.7 in the post-test, while the maximum score rose from 88 to 94. Although some variation in improvement was observed, overall results indicate that the combined use of top-down and bottom-up strategies effectively enhanced students’ listening comprehension. These findings suggest that integrating both approaches can support EFL learners in developing more accurate and efficient listening skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of English cartoon movies on vocabulary acquisition among EFL learners, with a focus on both receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge. It also explores retention and the influence of mediating variables such as proficiency level and captioning. Employing a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved 25 purposively selected junior high school EFL students with limited English exposure outside the classroom. Participants first completed a vocabulary pretest, then received treatment through guided exposure to an English cartoon movie (e.g., Dora the Explorer), and finally took a posttest. The results revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary scores, with the mean increasing from 75.16 (pretest) to 87.92 (posttest), yielding a mean gain of 12.76 points. Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test produced a t-value of 5.21 (p < 0.05), indicating that the difference was statistically significant. These findings support Dual Coding Theory and Constructivist learning principles, emphasizing the role of multimedia input in enhancing vocabulary learning. The use of cartoon-based audiovisual media proved effective across varying proficiency levels, narrowing learning gaps and promoting contextual vocabulary retention.
