Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of microplastic removal using filtration media composed of coconut shell biochar and polyurethane sponge, as well as to assess the potential toxicity of the filtered water on feed consumption efficiency in Oreochromis niloticus and microplastic bioaccumulation by fish. The filtration system had a diameter of 10 cm, employed an upward flow configuration, and operated at a flow rate of 30 mL/min. Optimization was conducted using an artificial solution containing microplastics through two series-connected filtration columns with a media thickness of 40 cm. Toxicity tests on the filtered water were performed on Nile tilapia using feed efficiency and the fish’s bioaccumulation capacity of microplastics as parameters, with fish sized 4-5 cm. Results showed that the highest microplastic removal efficiency for the first and second filter averaged 79% and 93%, respectively. Toxicity tests based on feed efficiency showed favorable percentages in experiments using the effluent from the second series column filter compared to the first series, even though the fish feed efficiency of both water effluent decreased on day 14. The highest microplastic accumulation was observed in the digestive tract, followed by the fish gill and fish muscle, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) value of microplastic in fish was less than 1, indicating a low level of bioaccumulation. This study demonstrates that the combination of coconut shell biochar and polyurethane sponge in two series of filtration has strong potential as an effective, economical, and accessible solution for microplastic filtration in water treatment.

Abstract

Abstract. Komala PS, Azhari RM, Hapsari FY, Edwin T, Ihsan T, Zulkarnaini, Harefa M. 2022. Comparison of bioconcentration factor of heavy metals between endemic fish and aquacultured fish in Maninjau Lake, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4026-4032. Fish have a high risk of accumulating metals and poses a risk of entering human bodies through the food chain. This study aims to analyze the concentration of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) spatially and temporally as well as the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) in endemic fish (Rasbora argyrotaenia) and aquacultured fish (Oreochromis niloticus) in Maninjau Lake and its relationship to environmental parameters (pH, DO and temperature). Sampling was conducted at domestic, hydropower, fish cage, and endemic fisheries. Spatial and temporal distribution using one-way ANOVA with 95% significance, while parameter correlation using linear regression. Almost all heavy metals in both fish samples exceeded the permissible level except in endemic fisheries sites. Metal concentrations in both fish species spatially showed a significant difference, while temporally showed no significant difference. Rasbora argyrotaenia showed a slightly higher BCF value than O.niloticus. The BCF values were low accumulative with order Pb>Hg>Cd ??in R. argyrotaenia and Pb>Cd>Hg for O. niloticus. There is a strong and positive correlation between temperature and the BCF value of both fish species for the three different metals. Monitoring fish by keeping metal content within acceptable limits is necessary. Further research on risk analysis of fish consumption in humans is recommended.

Abstract

Abstract. Edwin T, Primasari B, Purnama RA. 2023. Characterization of microplastic in trawl fish caught in Padang City (Indonesia) coastal area. Biodiversitas 24: 516-522. Marine organisms can ingest microplastics that are distributed in the oceans. It can harm marine organisms because carcinogenic materials easily attach to microplastics. Trawl fish is a commercial fish with a high demand from people in Padang City, West Sumatera, Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the abundance of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract of fish. Also, analyze the microplastic characteristics in trawl fish caught on Pasir Jambak Coast and Purus Coast in Padang City. The species studied were Sulphur goatfish (Upeneus sulphureus), Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), and White sardinella (Sardinella albella). Microplastics were identified using microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. Microplastic abundance in Sulphur goatfish, Indian mackerel, and White sardinella was 3.89±1.36 per fish, 4.22±1.28 particles per fish, and 2.50±0.46 particles per fish, respectively. The size of the most commonly found microplastics ranged from 1-5 mm and was categorized as the Large Microplastic (LMP) type. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis showed that the origin of the type of microplastic polymer found was Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). Statistically, it shows that the difference in the location and time of sampling does not provide a significant difference in the concentration of microplastics in fish and seawater. The results of this study indicated that microplastics were found in the waters and all fish samples on the coast of Padang City studied. Microplastics in the trawl fish can be used to manage plastic waste in the city to prevent a worse impact due to plastic pollution in the future.

Abstract

Abstract. Komala PS, Soeprobowati TR, Takarina ND, Subehi L, Wojewodka‑Przybyl M, Primasari B, Edwin T, Arlina L, Mardatillah R. 2026. Phytoplankton community response to seasonal eutrophication in Maninjau Lake, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 27 (2): d270232. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270232. The aim of this study is to analyze the seasonal trophic status of Maninjau Lake using the Comprehensive Trophic Status Index (CTSI) and to examine its spatial and temporal relationship with the phytoplankton community structure. The water and phytoplankton samples were collected from 10 sampling points in accordance with SNI 6989-57-2008 and the ecological protocol. Results show that CTSI values ranged from 62.59 to 73.28, indicating eutrophic to hypereutrophic conditions. The trophic sub-indices showed TSI-TP values of 53.24-82.20, TSI-TN values of 50.97-61.49, and TSI-Chl-a values of 52.98-62.07. Based on spatial analysis, the trophic status is relatively homogeneous across all sampling locations, indicating widespread nutrient loading in the lake. On the other hand, higher CTSI values during the rainy season and temporal variation of CTSI are significant. The increase in CTSI was associated with a change in phytoplankton dominance from Bacillariophyceae under eutrophic conditions to Cyanophyceae under hypereutrophic conditions, reflecting tolerance to increased nutrient concentrations. The hypereutrophic status of Maninjau Lake favored opportunistic taxa, as indicated by an increase in the dominance index and decreases in diversity and evenness. Rainfall contributes to shaping phytoplankton community dynamics, affecting the trophic status of the lake. This study highlights that integrating CTSI, phytoplankton ecological indices, and rainfall variability provides a useful framework for assessing air quality degradation and ecosystem stability in tropical lakes.
