Abstract

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has become a global pandemic since late 2019. In Indonesia, data shows that 11% of cases occur in children, but information on clinical and radiological features in children in East Kalimantan, especially Kutai Kartanegara Regency, is still limited. This study aims to determine the characteristics, clinical features, chest radiographs, and laboratory findings of pediatric patients with COVID-19 at Aji Muhammad Parikesit Hospital, Tenggarong in 2020. This study used a descriptive observational research method. The study sample was selected using purposive sampling technique with a total of 139 pediatric patients confirmed with COVID-19 from medical records and digital chest radiograph data. The results showed that the age group of 10-18 years was the most confirmed with COVID-19 (54%), females had the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases (53.2%), asymptomatic symptom criteria were obtained in 61.2% and mild in 38.3%. Symptoms were dominated by fever, cough, runny nose, and anosmia. The results of chest radiographs were dominated by abnormal findings (59%) and all on bilateral lungs with consolidation. In blood laboratory, ANC, NLR, Leucocyte, and Thrombocyte levels were dominated by the normal category, while ALC and Hemoglobin levels were dominated by the low category. This study describes the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and chest radiographs that are generally found in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract

Meningoencephalitis is a pathological state characterized by concurrent inflammation of the meninges and the brain parenchyma. Liquor Cerebrospinal analysis (LCS) can help establish a diagnosis of diseases affecting the central nervous system, including meningoencephalitis. Objective: To identified the attributes of meningoencephalitis LCS analysis in pediatric patients at RSUD Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Samarinda from 2019 until 2022. Methods: This study employs a descriptive research design to delineate the features of the LCS analysis. The data utilized in this study was acquired from the medical records of individuals who had experienced meningoencephalitis during their childhood and obtained as many as 39 patient data samples. Results: The findings revealed that most cases were observed in children aged 0-1 years (38.5%), with a higher incidence in males (59.0%). The LCS analysis parameters indicated that lymphocytic pleocytosis was the most common (76.9%), while clear  LCS was observed in 82.1%. The leukocyte count was within the normal range of 56.4%, and the polymorphonuclear ratio was negative (79.5%). The protein levels increased by 56.4%, while the glucose levels were within the normal range (59.0%). Conclusion: There is an increase in LCS  protein levels, which indicates inflammation. Keywords: LCS  analysis, LCS parameters, meningoencephalitis

Abstract

Background: Leukemia is a common malignancy in children and occurs when changes in normal cell regulatory processes lead to proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. Leukemic patients have a higher susceptibility to dental and oral diseases such as mucositis and xerostomia due to damage by chemotherapeutic agents to oral mucosal cells which have a high mitotic index. Objective: To determine the characteristics of leukemia in children with oral manifestations at the Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Hospital Samarinda which is the main referral hospital in the province of East Kalimantan. Materials and Methods: This research is descriptive with cross-sectional method using medical record data as the subject based on the specified criteria. Data were grouped by type of leukemia, age, gender, nutritional status and oral manifestations. Results: A total of 1,330 cases of Leukemia in 2017-2021 with 12 suitable respondents. There were cases with male gender (58.3%) and 0-5 years of age which were comparable to those of 6-18 years (50%). The type of acute lymphoblastic leukemia was the most common in this study with a frequency of 83.3%. Mucositis (58.3%) was the most common manifestation of people with normal nutritional status (41.7%) and laboratory results stated the average of leukocytes was 45,700/uL, hemoglobin was 10.4 g/dl, and platelets was 117,600/mm3. A total of 66.6% of respondents had received chemotherapy. Conclusion: Oral manifestations can occur due to leukemia or side effects of chemotherapy, the importance of multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment between pediatricians and pediatric dentists in managing the dental health of leukemia patients.

Abstract

Latar belakang.
