Abstract

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important food crops in the world after rice and wheat. There were various problem in crop production, one of which is the attack of fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E Smith). The alternative technique to control this was using botanical pesticide from forest betel leaf (Piper aduncum L.). This study aimede to obtain an effective concentration of forest betel leaf extract to control fall armyworm. This research was carried out at the Plant Pests Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Laboratory of Natural materials and minerals, Faculty of Engineering, Riau University for 3 months from July to September 2021. The study consisted of six treatments 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, 1% and four replications This research was arranged by Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that the use of forest betel leaf extract had a significant effect on the mortality of Spodoptera frugiperda larvaeConcentration of 0.8% is effective in controlling Spodoptera frugiperda larvae because it caused mortality at about 80% with an initial time of death  was 1 hour after application and a lethal time of 50 at 13.5 hours after application.

Abstract

Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is the primary pest of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Applying oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and various other organic materials to cultivated land is assumed to support the growth of rhinoceros beetles. The study aimed to determine the suitability of organic matter as a place for rhinoceros beetle larvae to live. The research was carried out experimentally using a completely randomized design (RBD) with eight treatments and four replications. The treatment was in the form of OPEFB, rice husk, sawdust, OPEFB + rice husk, OPEFB + sawdust, OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust, and OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust without composting. The results showed that the growth of rhinoceros beetle larvae tended to be best on an organic material combination of OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust without being composted. Meanwhile, rice husk is the most unsuitable organic material for developing rhinoceros beetle larvae. Applying organic matter to palm land should be composted beforehand to reduce Rhinoceros beetle infestation.

Abstract

Forest betel (Piper aduncum) includes weed plants from the Piperaceae family that can be used as the main ingredient in the manufacture of environmentally friendly pest control technology, also known as botanical pesticides. Botanical pesticides from P. aduncum have the active compound dillapiol, which can control pests in various plants, especially horticulture. Commercialization of botanical pesticides needs to be done because the product meets the standards for pest control and is available in sufficient quantities on the market. The partnership was initiated by involving local communities as providers of raw materials. Surian area, Solok Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, has an area where P. aduncum plants dominate, so it has the potential to provide raw materials. Socialization activities about the potential of forest betel fruit or P. aduncum were given to prospective partner communities. Furthermore, training activities on handling P. aduncum fruit were also provided so that partners had sufficient knowledge and skills to proceed. At the same time, an analysis of P. aduncum fruit extract from the Surian area was also carried out. Sampling was carried out in the Surian area, and then the material was sorted, dried, refined, sieved, maserase, and extracted. Identification of dillapiol content was carried out using GC-MS. The analysis results showed that P. aduncum fruit extract was known to have an average yield of 0.1% with a dillapiol content of 12.23% at a retention time of 19.925 minutes.

Abstract

Gold snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is the main pest of rice plants in Empat Balai Village, Kuok District, Kampar Regency. Farmers in Empat Balai Village experience gold snail infestation every year, which has an impact on production. The purpose of community service activities is to conduct community service by counseling and controlling carp pests in rice fields by utilizing local wisdom in Empat Balai Village. The methods in this service are survey, consolidation, counseling and field practice. The counseling was held at Mushallah Miftahul Jannah in Pulau Empat Hamlet, while the field practice was at the farmer’s house and rice fields in Empat Balai Village. The material provided was about bioecology and how to control the carp snail pest. It was emphasized that the recommended control carp pests are the management of carp pests in the egg phase, because one group of eggs has 500 eggs and control is easier in the egg phase. Control in the egg phase includes making drainage or small ditches, installing bamboo stakes so that the snails lay their eggs there, and collecting the eggs once a week. In the snail phase, involves setting up attractant plant traps (gadung tuber leaf, papaya leaf, and banana leaf), kalambuai traps (kaltrap), installing of irrigated nets, utilizing ducks, and vegetable molluscicides. In addition, preventive measure was taken, such as planting older seedlings. The farmers were very enthusiastic about this activity. As a result, farmers gained additional knowledge about gold snail pests and how to control them, improve farmers skills on gold snail pests control methods by utilizing local wisdom.
