Abstract

This study examines the interplay between sex, politeness, and stereotypes in Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022), focusing on Enola's interactions with Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory and Butler’s (1990) gender performativity framework, the research analyzes how Enola employs politeness and directness to navigate social expectations. The findings reveal that Enola challenges traditional gender stereotypes by using assertive language with Sherlock, countering the idea that women are inherently indirect and deferential. Her polite exchanges with Mycroft, meanwhile, demonstrate that politeness can function as resistance, not just submission. This analysis highlights the adaptability of gendered communication, where politeness and assertiveness are used contextually rather than being tied to sex. Ultimately, the research shows how media like Enola Holmes both reflects and challenges societal expectations about gendered communication, offering a more nuanced view of language, gender, and power.

Abstract

This study investigates impoliteness strategies used in the YouTube comment section of Gibran Rakabuming's video entitled "Generasi Muda, Bonus Demografi, dan Masa Depan Indonesia." Using a qualitative approach and Culpeper's (2005) impoliteness framework, the researchers analyzed 50 purposively selected comments. The study identifies various strategies such as bald-on-record impoliteness, sarcasm/mock politeness, positive impoliteness, and negative impoliteness. The findings reveal that bald-on-record and sarcasm are the most frequent strategies used, often driven by political dissatisfaction and emotional expression. This study aims to determine the most dominant impoliteness strategy employed by netizens and contributes to understanding digital discourse in Indonesian political contexts, highlighting the role of anonymity and group identity in shaping online communication.

Abstract

This study explores the use of referential expressions in six selected songs from NIKI Zefanya’s 2024 album Buzz. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Halliday and Hasan’s theory of reference, the research aims to identify the types of referential expressions used in the lyrics and analyze their contribution to meaning and emotional impact. The findings reveal a total of 74 referential expressions, consisting of 53 personal references, 9 demonstrative references, and 12 comparative references. Personal references, such as I, you, and my, are the most dominant and function to express intimacy, personal emotion, and connection with the listener. Demonstrative references, like this and that, help point to emotional states or symbolic meanings. Comparative references, including like, better, and too much, are used to express metaphor, contrast, or emotional intensity. The study concludes that referential expressions not only serve grammatical functions but also shape how meaning is constructed in song lyrics. These expressions enhance narrative clarity, emotional depth, and listener engagement, showing that even small linguistic choices can have a strong impact on how music is experienced and understood.

Abstract

Language plays a vital role in expressing emotions, facilitating communication, and conveying a speaker’s stance through modality. This study analyzes the use of modality in a political speech by Donald Trump regarding a new U.S.-China trade deal, delivered on May 12, 2025. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research investigates how modality reflects Trump's intentions, beliefs, and authority. Data were collected through indirect observation of a YouTube video titled “President Trump touts new US-China trade deal: We Opened Up China”, followed by transcription, identification, and categorization of modality types based on Palmer's (2013) framework: epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modality. The findings reveal that Trump uses epistemic modality to express speculation, deontic modality to convey obligation and prohibition, and dynamic modality to demonstrate capability and initiative. These elements function strategically to shape his image as a decisive and persuasive leader. The study supports previous findings that modality serves as a rhetorical device in political discourse, contributing to influence and narrative construction.

Abstract

In the digital era, podcasts have emerged as a powerful medium for in-depth conversations that allow speakers to address complex social, personal, and controversial issues. This study aims to analyze how Grice's Cooperative Principles are adhered to, flouted, or violated in Jansen Manangsang's episode on CURHAT BANG. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, selected transcripts will be examined to uncover patterns of conversational behavior that reveal how meaning is constructed and concealed in emotionally intense digital communication. The research highlights the complexity of pragmatic interpretation and underscores the importance of pragmatics theory in analyzing real-life, emotionally charged conversations in digital media. This research contributes to digital pragmatics by showing how language in controversial podcasts shapes public perception, manages emotion, and constructs social narratives.

Abstract

This research explores the use of conceptual metaphors in Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department, focusing on how metaphorical language is used to express emotional depth and personal experiences. Applying Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), the study classifies metaphorical expressions into three types: structural, orientational, and ontological. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from the official lyrics of 16 songs in the album. The analysis shows that conceptual metaphors are employed consistently to depict abstract ideas such as heartbreak, vulnerability, self-perception, and emotional transformation. Structural metaphors are used to map personal experiences through familiar frameworks, orientational metaphors describe emotional states using spatial direction, and ontological metaphors give physical form to intangible feelings. Through metaphor, Swift constructs vivid imagery that allows listeners to relate to complex emotions in a concrete and meaningful way.

Abstract

In the digital era, social media platforms like Instagram have become critical arenas for public discourse, especially in political communication. This study investigates public sentiment and expressive speech acts in Instagram comments responding to two of President Prabowo’s key policy announcements: the Free Nutritious Meal Program and the policy of direct bank transfers for regional ASN teacher allowances. Guided by Searle’s theory of speech acts, particularly expressive acts such as thanking, complementing, congratulating, deploring, condoling, apologizing, and welcoming, the study analyzes 60 purposively selected comments, 30 for each policy. The findings show that deploring dominates the discourse, with 67% in the meal program post and 73% in the ASN allowance post, indicating prevailing negative sentiment marked by criticism, disappointment, and frustration. Positive speech acts such as complimenting and thanking were present but marginal. These results highlight the importance of transparent policy implementation and the need for improved public communication strategies to address citizen concerns more effectively on digital platforms.

Abstract

Speaking fluency and confidence are crucial in second language acquisition, particularly for young learners who require engaging and interactive methods to enhance their communication skills. Traditional rote-based learning often fails to provide meaningful practice, leading to anxiety and lack of confidence in speaking. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in improving elementary students' confidence and fluency in speaking English. The research was conducted over eight sessions using a qualitative approach. Interactive teaching methods, including songs, roleplays, games, and self-description competitions, were implemented. Data were collected through observations and student progress evaluations, focusing on pronunciation, sentence construction, and fluency. The findings indicate that task-based activities significantly improved students’ confidence, fluency, and engagement. Initially, students faced challenges such as speaking anxiety, low participation, and disruptive behavior. However, through interactive strategies, they gradually overcame these difficulties. By the final session, most students demonstrated the ability to introduce and describe themselves fluently, showcasing the effectiveness of TBLT and CLT in ESL education. This study highlights the importance of student-centered, communicative learning approaches in fostering fluency and confidence in young ESL learners. The success of TBLT and CLT suggests that interactive, task-based instruction should be encouraged in ESL education to ensure learners can effectively use English in real-life situations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic functions of deixis in six selected songs from Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album. Using Levinson’s (1983) theory of deixis, the study identifies and classifies five types of deictic expressions: person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method and uses documentation as its main data collection technique. A total of 306 deixis were found: 228 person deixis, 33 time deixis, 16 place deixis, 19 discourse deixis, and 11 social deixis. The dominant use of person deixis demonstrates the strong self-expression and emotional engagement of the singer. Time and discourse deixis help shape the emotional timeline of the narrative, while place and social deixis reflect interpersonal distance and roles. The findings reveal that deixis functions not only to maintain textual cohesion but also as a pragmatic tool to construct intimacy, express identity, and evoke emotional resonance in the lyrics.
