Abstract

Nias middle dialect is one of dialects used by people living on Nias island that administratively belongs to North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. The lack of studies on the language especially in semantics field was the main motivation in conducting this research. Another thing that also strongly supported the conduct of this research was a phenomenon in which some verbs semantically related to verb 'to cut' were rarely used by speakers of Nias middle dialect. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aims of discovering the verbs that have semantic relation to the verb “to cut” and describing the meaning of the verbs by employing the Natural Semantic Metalanguage theory of Wierzbicka (1996) in the qualitative research design. To collect the data, cakap method was applied which is supported by pancing and rekam techniques. In analyzing the data, padan method was applied. Based on the results of data analysis, it was revealed that there were forty-seven Nias middle dialect verbs that semantically related to the verb 'to cut'. In accordance with the results of the explication of meaning, the verbs can be classified into three groups, namely verbs that are done with tools, verbs that are done without tools, and verbs that can be done with or without tools. This phenomenon shows that Nias people do a lot of cutting activities in their social lives.

Abstract

The title of this research is Signs Found in Instagram Account Advertisement of Bali United. This research aims to analyze and describe the types and meanings of signs in Bali United advertisements. Several methods were applied in determining data source, data collection, data analysis, and presentation of analysis results. The main theory used to solve this problem is the theory of sign proposed by Pierce in the book Semiotics: The Basics Second Edition by Daniel Chandler and the supporting theory supports the main theory proposed by Leech in the book Semantics: The Study of Meaning, Second Edition. Based on Leech theory, meaning is grouped into 7 types: conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, collocative meaning, and thematic meaning. The results of this research indicate that there are several signs found in Bali United advertisements which include icons, indexes and symbols. Analysis based on Peirce's triadic model of signs refers to an understanding of signs that involve a representament, an object and an interpretant. The results of this research show that there are three types of meaning found. They are conceptual meaning, connotative meaning and affective meaning.

Based on Levinson’s (1983) theory of deixis, this research aims to identify the types of person deixis and determine their dominant usage in news discourse. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining qualitative descriptive analysis and quantitative frequency analysis. The data were obtained from selected CNN news articles published between August and December 2021. The findings show that third person deixis is the most dominant type, reflecting the objective and informative nature of news reporting. First person deixis appears mainly in direct quotations, while second person deixis is used in limited contexts to address readers or quoted participants. This study concludes that person deixis plays an essential role in conveying information clearly and maintaining coherence in news texts.

Serangan Island now becomes the new emerging tourism area in Bali more specifically in Denpasar. The growth of tourism should be equivalent to the growth the society. Preparing qualified human resource is crucial especially the ability to speak a foreign language and one of the languages is English. Encouraging the interest of children especially the elementary students is a challenge that needs to be answered. This article is describing the exploration of seeking and determining appropriate method in teaching English for the students in order to improve the students’ interest in learning English as a second language as it was found that the students were not interested in learning English. This might because of poor students’ motivation and also it might be because of the less attractive method applied by the teacher in the process of learning English as students are easy to get bored. Based on that phenomenon this article tries to apply the method of ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) in teaching English for Elementary Student. The results show that the method is significantly changing the situation in the class when the students learning English. After applying the method significance change has occurred. The students have increased their motivation to study English as it can be seen from the activeness of the student in the process of learning. All students are enjoyed and involved in the class. This community provides Ice Breaking to Help the Children in Suwung Village in Starting the Process of Self-Establishment. This Community service Program activity aims to provide learning that can help the fostered children in Suwung Village, provide learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and provide knowledge about models, media, and learning techniques—needed by the foster children in Suwung Village in the learning community in Suwung Village. The method of this community service is the program offered to partners in the icebreaking learning model. This learning model is carried out in two ways: playing together and singing as explained by Setyawan (2015) that icebreaking was carried out with two events, namely playing and singing. The result of this community service program show that the problems faced by partners are the lack of learning models that can help the fostered children in Suwung Village, partners need learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and the lack of attention to models, media, and learning techniques needed by foster children in Suwung Village. Thus, this PKM activity is carried out to provide learning that can help the formation of the guided children in Suwung Village, provide learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and provide knowledge about models, media, and learning techniques needed by the assisted children in Suwung Village in the learning community in Suwung Village.

Abstract

This study examines adjacency pairs in the conversations of the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The study focuses on identifying the types of adjacency pairs and explaining their interactional functions in the dialogue. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method using movie dialogue and official script as data sources. Data were collected through observation and note-taking and analyzed using Conversation Analysis by Schegloff and Sacks (1973), Preference Organization by Levinson, and discourse analysis by Paltridge (2012). The findings show ten adjacency pair types, namely question–answer, request–acceptance, request–refusal, assessment–agreement, assessment–disagreement, greeting–greeting, offer–acceptance, offer–refusal, apology–acceptance, and compliment–acceptance. The question–answer pattern appeared most dominantly because many interactions demanded clarification from Miles. Adjacency pairs not only regulate the order of conversation but also indicate power relations and emotional states. The results indicate that adjacency pairs organize turn-taking, reveal power relations, express emotional pressure, and support character development. Miles Morales appears as a reactive participant who gradually becomes confident and independent through interaction patterns. Changes in response patterns indicate character development. Miles initially avoids, gives minimal answers, and uses indirect refusals. As the story progresses, he gives acceptance, agreement, and clearer responses. Nonverbal responses such as silence, nods, and facial expressions also function as part of the conversation pair and reinforce the meaning of the interaction. The study concludes that adjacency pairs function as a linguistic mechanism shaping conversational flow and narrative meaning in animated movie dialogue.
