Abstract

Tapioca is a natural polymer that is widely used as a raw material for hydrogels. In order to improve the mechanical properties of tapioca-based hydrogels, this research modified tapioca by acid hydrolysis method for 2 hours and 24 hours and by ethanol precipitation method. This modified tapioca was further treated with epichlorohydrin with various concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 20% to produce a three-dimensional cross-linked structure. The results showed that the increasing of epichlorohydrin concentration led to an increasing in the mechanical properties of the hydrogels consisting of hardness, stress, modulus of elasticity, and cross-linked density. The hydrogel from tapioca hydrolyzed for 24 hours and 20% epichlorohydrin was the sample with the best mechanical properties with a hardness of 19.78 mJ, a stress of 78.65 kPa, a modulus of elasticity of 233.84 mJ, and a cross-linked density of 57.61 × 1024 m-3.

Abstract

The Super Water Absorbent (SWA) polymer is a type of polymer that has exceptional water absorption capabilities while remaining insoluble in water. In this study, the authors conducted research on the modification of SWA by including acrylic acid and acrylamide monomers, followed by a crosslinking process utilising gamma irradiation. This study investigated the impact of acrylic acid and gamma irradiation on the mechanical characteristics of SWA. The experimental findings demonstrated a notable enhancement in the mechanical properties of the hydrogel by the incorporation of acrylic acid. This was evidenced by a substantial rise in the hardness value, which rose from 11.09 mJ to 36.13 mJ.

Abstract

The lithium ion battery is a type of secondary battery. A good component to be used as the anode of a lithium ion battery is Li4Ti5O12 (LTO). LTO has a low conductivity value so doping is necessary. Doping particle size greatly affects the conductivity of LTO. The purpose of this doping was carried out to find out how the effect of CaO nanoparticle doping on the conductivity value of the LTO battery anode using the coprecipitation method by varying the molarity of NaOH, namely 1M, 3M and 7M. Based on the results of research on the influence of NaOH molarity, it produces different sizes of nanoparticles. The smallest nanoparticle size was obtained in the 3M sample variation, which was 175.0 nm. With a purity of CaO nanoparticles of 96.35%. While the conductivity value of the lithium ion battery doped with CaO nanoparticles with three variations of NaOH molarity, the optimum value was obtained in the 1M sample, which was 1.06 × 10-6 S/cm. This is because the 1M variation produces very low impurities compared to the 3M and 7M variations which have more impurities, this can affect the conductivity value.

Abstract

Background: Due to its adverse outcomes and thromboembolic complications, early detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) is advisable in the general population. This study aims to compare the diagnostic ability of two distinct method in smartphone application format, namely : AliveCor KardiaMobile and FibriCheck. Methods: This study was conducted in Mohammad Hospital General Hospital Palembang with convenience sampling of 170 participants aged 18 years or older. The subjects underwent Fibricheck and KardiaMobile recordings followed by 12 lead electrocardiogram read by board-certified cardiologist as the diagnostic standard. Results: After the exclusion of previous pacemaker implantation (n=7), 163 patients were included in the study. The mean age was 51±15 years with gender distribution of 74.8% men and 25.2% women. Most of the subjects were asymptomatic (87.1%) with mean blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg. The Fibricheck readings showed sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 93%, meanwhile Kardiamobile was able to detect AF with sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 98%. Conclusion: In our study, KardiaMobile demonstrated overall greater sensitivity and specificity when compared to FibriCheck. However, KardiaMobile requires an external metal sensor that must be puchased separately. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to directly compare both methods in the Indonesian population.

Abstract

Cassava pulp or bagasse is a by-product of cassava processing with high starch and cellulose, showing strong potential for development into various high-value products, including hydrogel. Hydrogel is a polymer capable of absorbing a large amount of water without dissolving and is suitable for several applications. Therefore, this study aimed to synthesize and characterize hydrogel made from cassava waste pulp with different concentrations of acrylamide and acrylic acid (AA). The treatments used were the percentage of acrylic acid, namely 0, 5, 15, 25, and 35%, alongside N, N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) percentages (0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5%). Parameters observed were swelling, swelling kinetics, gel fraction, mechanical properties, and surface morphology. The results showed that the addition of acrylic acid and crosslinking with MBA had a significant effect on swelling, gel fraction, and mechanical properties at a significant level of 5%. FTIR confirmed the chemical interaction comprising acrylic-acrylamide acid andMBA in cassava pulp. In line with the analysis, the best treatment was obtained from 25% acrylic acid percentage and 0.5% MBA concentration with 1058% swelling value and 70.05% gel fraction. This hydrogel had a hardness of 6.46 mJ, 5.39 kPa modulus of elasticity, and 4.34 x 1023 m-3 active bonds per unit volume, showing the potential for use in agricultural fields as a planting medium, water carrier, and fertilizer protector.

Abstract

The development of bioplastics has continued to grow as an alternative material based on renewable natural resources. Cellulose is a natural polymer that is widely used as a raw material for bioplastics; however, cellulose-based bioplastics generally show limited mechanical stability and rigidity. Therefore, the addition of chitosan and glycerol is required to improve their characteristics. This study aims to determine the cellulose content and functional groups of banana stem cellulose and to analyze the effect of chitosan concentration on the thickness, mechanical properties, and degradation rate of banana stem cellulose-based bioplastics using glycerol as a plasticizer. Bioplastics were synthesized by varying the chitosan concentration at 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. The results showed that the cellulose content of banana stems reached 93%, with the presence of –OH, –CH, and –CO functional groups. The variation in chitosan concentration affected the thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and degradation rate of the bioplastics. An increase in chitosan concentration resulted in a decrease in thickness and elongation, while tensile strength and degradation rate increased with higher chitosan content. These results indicate that chitosan concentration significantly influences the physical, mechanical, and degradation properties of banana stem cellulose-based bioplastics, demonstrating their potential as biodegradable materials.

Abstract

Wound healing is a complex biological process in which wound dressings play a vital role in providing protection and supporting tissue regeneration. In this study, cassava dregs waste was utilized as a base material for the development of hydrogel wound dressings. The hydrogel was incorporated with black pepper (Piper nigrum) extract to enhance its antibacterial properties. Sample preparation consisted of several stages, including cassava dregs processing, hydrogel synthesis, and extraction of black pepper using the maceration method. The hydrogel was characterized in terms of swelling capacity, gel fraction, swelling kinetics, antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, functional group identification using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and morphological analysis. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of black pepper extract significantly affected the swelling behavior of the hydrogel, with swelling capacities ranging from 263.76% to 387.87%. The hydrogel exhibited a high gel fraction of 86.13% and favorable swelling kinetics with a kinetic constant of 0.5443. Variations in black pepper extract volume were evaluated, including 0 ml (control), 20 ml, 40 ml, and 60 ml. These findings indicate that cassava dregs–based hydrogels enriched with black pepper extract have promising potential as antibacterial wound dressing materials.

Abstract

Background : Cardiotoxicity remains a major concern in breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline-based chemotherapy. Meanwhile, prolongation of the QTc interval has been associated with an increased risk of torsades de pointes; however, the clinical evidence for its role as a predictor of subclinical cardiotoxicity remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the association between Bazett-corrected QTc and the incidence of subclinical left ventricular dysfunction, as measured by strain echocardiography. Methods : This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Indonesia (January 2022–December 2023). Female breast cancer patients aged ≥18 years who received anthracycline or non-anthracycline chemotherapy and completed baseline and third-cycle echocardiography were included. QTc was measured from 12-lead ECGs before and after chemotherapy using Bazett’s formula. Subclinical cardiotoxicity was defined as a >15% relative reduction in global longitudinal strain (GLS) from baseline. Logistic regression and ROC analyses assessed the predictive value of baseline QTcB. Result : In 32 breast cancer patients on anthracycline therapy (mean age 49.5 ± 9.0 years) were analyzed; 59.4% developed subclinical cardiotoxicity. Prolonged baseline QTcB, older age, and obesity were significantly associated with subclinical cardiotoxicity (p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, QTcB remained an independent predictor (OR = 21.09; 95% CI: 0.979–454.4; p = 0.05). ROC analysis showed moderate discrimination (AUC = 0.717; 95% CI: 0.50–0.92; p = 0.04). Conclusion : Prolonged QTc appears to be a promising predictor of subclinical cardiotoxicity with fair diagnostic accuracy. However, it should be considered alongside other modalities. Further studies with larger populations are needed to control for other risk factors.
