Abstract

This research aims to reconstruct the cognitive process in formulating research problems in writing scientific journal articles. Through a grounded theory approach, this study reveals six important findings related to the formulation of research problems in scientific journal articles, i.e.: a gap between expectations and reality; intensive search by finding possibilities, norm testing results and case studies; mapping global structure of issues; and data replication. This research concludes that the formulation of research problems in writing scientific journal articles is identical to the research gap (RG). As an empty space or a vast space of possibilities, RG can be entered and examined more deeply and seriously by researchers in various disciplines so that they can explore and discover new knowledge. This research has an important and significant impact on the development of science and technology. It offers a new approach to how cognitive experiences were constructed. The results of the construction of this cognitive process have tangible benefits for many people regarding how research problems and research questions are formulated.

Abstract

Abstract This study explores the intricacies of figurative language and speech acts within five selected short stories from "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." Through a qualitative analysis grounded in the theories of Austin and Searle for speech acts, and further supported by the descriptive insights of figurative language as discussed by Adiwangsa & Sakinah (2023) and Ampa & Quraisy (2018), this research aims to identify the dominant types of speech acts and the underlying meanings conveyed through figurative expressions. The methodology encompasses content analysis, with the researcher herself acting as the primary instrument, supplemented by digital tools for text examination. The findings reveal the prevalence of directive, expressive, and representative speech acts manifested in similes, metaphors, and metonyms, underscoring the significance of these linguistic features in enhancing the interpretative richness of literary texts. This study contributes to the broader discourse on linguistic analysis in literature, offering insights into the dynamic interplay between language form and function, and its educational implications in English Language and Arts curricula.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum, recently introduced in Indonesia, aims to restore learning by prioritizing essential content and character development. While promising, its implementation in language education presents significant challenges and opportunities. This meta-synthetic analysis explores these aspects by synthesizing findings from various qualitative studies on the curriculum’s impact on language learning. Data were gathered from peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and educational reports, focusing on studies conducted in diverse Indonesian educational settings. Key challenges identified include inconsistent teacher training, limited resources, and resistance to new pedagogical approaches. However, the curriculum also offers notable opportunities, such as enhanced student engagement, improved critical thinking, and the promotion of learner autonomy. Its emphasis on project-based learning and flexible teaching methods fosters a more interactive, student-centered environment. The study concludes that while the Merdeka Curriculum presents challenges, it also holds significant potential to enhance language education. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive teacher training, adequate resource allocation, and continuous support for educators. The study recommends targeted professional development for teachers, increased investment in educational resources, and ongoing evaluation to ensure effective implementation. Policymakers should create supportive frameworks that enable schools to adapt the curriculum to their specific contexts, maximizing its benefits for language education.

Abstract

This study examines the translation equivalence and techniques used in translating idiomatic expressions in the subtitling and dubbing of the movie Raya and the Last Dragon. Using a qualitative case study approach, 72 idiomatic expressions were analyzed based on Nida & Taber’s theory of translation equivalence and Molina and Albir’s translation techniques. Results showed that 51% of subtitling and 52% of dubbing translations were equivalently translated into idiomatic expressions, while the remaining were rendered as non-idiomatic expressions due to the lack of equivalent idioms in the target language. Single translation techniques dominated, accounting for 98% in subtitling and 99% in dubbing, with established equivalence being the most frequently used technique. This highlights the translator's ability to maintain idiomatic meaning and cultural relevance. The study recommends exploring idiomatic translation strategies in diverse audiovisual media and cultural contexts to further enhance the understanding of effective translation techniques. Keywords: Translation techniques; idiomatic expressions; subtitling; dubbing; equivalence; established equivalence; audiovisual translation.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) method in enhancing the speaking skills of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Ciawigebang during the 2023/2024 academic year. Employing a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test, the study involved 30 purposively selected students from a total population of 124. Speaking tests served as instruments for data collection, conducted before and after the treatment. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking abilities post-treatment, as evidenced by the increase in mean scores from 68.1 in the pre-test to 73.3 in the post-test. Statistical analysis confirmed that the ESA method positively impacts students’ speaking skills, particularly in terms of accuracy and fluency, as shown by a significant value (p = 0.000 < 0.05). These results suggest that the ESA method is an effective pedagogical tool for fostering speaking competence in high school learners. Keywords: ESA method; teaching speaking; speaking skills; accuracy; fluency; high school students

Abstract

This study presents a meta-synthesis analysis of the challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in composing academic writing (AW). A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies on EFL learners' difficulties in AW, leading to the inclusion of 25 articles in the final analysis. The selected articles were systematically analyzed and synthesized to identify common themes and patterns related to the difficulties EFL learners face in AW. The findings revealed five major categories of challenges: including linguistic difficulties, organizational and coherence problems, cultural and sociocultural factors, feedback and revision, and motivation and self-efficacy. Based on the meta-synthesis, recommendations for teaching and learning practices are provided, as well as directions for future research in the area of EFL composition. By understanding the challenges faced by EFL learners in composition, educators can develop targeted interventions and support strategies to facilitate their students' progress and success in composing texts.
