Abstract

Abstract

Economic growth is often used as the main indicator of welfare, but in Indonesia the increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has not been fully accompanied by a significant decrease in poverty and income inequality. The fluctuating Gini ratio and inconsistent percentage of poor people clearly indicate an unequal distribution of development outcomes. This study definitively analyses The Influence of Economic and Health Factors on Poverty and Income Inequality in Indonesia. This study was conducted in 34 provinces in Indonesia for the period 2016-2023 using secondary data sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Directorate General of Fiscal Balance (DJPK). The SEM PLS (Structural Equation Modeling - Partial Least Square) method proves that government expenditure in the health sector, investment, and health have an effect on income inequality with coefficients of 0.28; 0.15; and 0.27. Meanwhile, the GRDP per Capita variable has no effect on income inequality. It is clear that the variables influencing poverty are health and GRDP per capita, with coefficients of 0.79 and 0.18. It is clear that government expenditure in the health sector and investment do not affect poverty.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is as follows: analyse the effect of government spending on environmental protection and energy conservation through Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) on the Environmental Quality Index (EQI). This paper includes panel data on government spending on environmental protection and energy conservation as independent variables, GRDP as an intervening variable, and EQI as a dependent variable in Java and Bali Island in 2015-2023 using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The results of the study found a significant positive effect between government spending on environmental protection on GRDP and energy conservation on EQI. When the government spends the budget on environmental programmes, the currency circulating in the community can create jobs, thereby increasing local revenue. In addition, increasing the use of energy, especially renewable energy, also supports the creation of a healthier and more sustainable environment. The results find no evidence for a positive effect of energy conservation on GRDP, government spending on environmental protection on EQI, and GRDP on EQI. We conjecture that weak institutional quality can explain these results.

Abstract

Nowadays, the world relies heavily on digitalization. This study aims to analyze the effect of digitalization on economic growth in Indonesia. This study used panel data from 32 provinces in Indonesia, ranging from year 2017 to 2023. This study employed fixed and dynamic panel models with economic growth as the dependent variable and stock of capital and labor digitalization as independent variables. Digitalization is proxied by the access and infrastructure sub-index, the usage sub-index, and the skills sub-index. The estimation result shows that variables of stock of capital, labor, and digital economic development in Indonesia positively affect economic growth, and we also find that heterogeneity effects exist between different provinces. However, there is no significant effect on the dynamic panel models on generalized method moment. The results draw three implications: increasing investment in physical capital stock, improving human capital quality, and promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) readiness.

Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions are one of the main causes of climate change in the world. This study aims to analyze the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions within the framework of sustainable development, taking into account mediating variables such as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, fossil energy consumption, renewable energy consumption, and forest cover area. The method used is a quantitative approach employing Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) using WarpPLS 8.0. Data sources include Our World in Data and the World Bank, covering the period from 1990 to 2022. The results show that urbanization has a significant positive impact on GDP per capita and fossil fuel consumption with coefficients of 0.99 and 0.98. Urbanization also has a significant negative impact on renewable energy consumption and forest cover area with coefficients of -0.99 and -0.99. GDP per capita and fossil fuel consumption have a significant positive impact on carbon emissions, with coefficients of 0.33 and 0.47. Renewable energy consumption and forest cover area each show a significant negative impact on carbon emissions, with coefficients of -0.38 and -0.41. However, the direct relationship between urbanization and carbon emissions shows a non-significant positive effect with a coefficient of 0.24. These findings conclude that urbanization in Indonesia contributes to an increase in carbon emissions indirectly through mediating variables, while its direct relationship with emissions is not significant.

Abstract

Fiscal sustainability has become an important issue for local governments as it reflects their ability to finance public services without creating a prolonged deficit burden. Regencies and cities in West Java face challenges of high dependence on central government transfers and imbalances between local revenue and public expenditure. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing fiscal sustainability of regencies and cities in West Java Province. Fiscal sustainability in this study is proxied by the nominal fiscal position (the difference between total regional revenue and total regional expenditure), where a positive value indicates a surplus and a negative value indicates a deficit. This research employs panel data from 27 regencies/cities in West Java during the 2018–2022 period, with independent variables consisting of Local Own-Source Revenue (PAD), General Allocation Fund (DAU), Special Allocation Fund (DAK), Regional Expenditure Ratio (RBD), and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Data were analyzed using panel regression with the Common Effect Model. The results show that PAD (Prob. = 0.0804), DAK (Prob. = 0.0136), and RBD (Prob. = 0.0004) have a negative and significant effect on fiscal sustainability. In contrast, DAU has a positive and significant effect (Prob. = 0.0463), while GRDP has no significant effect (Prob. = 0.3325). These findings indicate that increases in PAD and DAK tend to encourage greater spending, thereby worsening the fiscal position, consistent with the flypaper effect and fiscal illusion theories. Meanwhile, DAU contributes positively to improving the fiscal position. The results emphasize the need for more disciplined expenditure management so that additional revenues can effectively strengthen local fiscal sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of good governance indicators, including corruption, democracy, law enforcement, and budget realization, on sustainable development in Indonesia. The research covers 34 provinces during the period 2020–2023. A quantitative approach was employed using a fixed-effects panel regression model. The findings indicate that the number of corruption cases has a significant positive effect on sustainable development, while democracy shows a positive but statistically insignificant relationship. In contrast, law enforcement, measured by the completion rate of criminal cases, and budget realization, both demonstrate significant negative effects on sustainable development. These results provide empirical grounds for designing adaptive and integrative policies that emphasize preventive measures, institutional innovation, and environmental incentives to achieve sustainability goals effectively. This study is limited by its short observation period, bias from the use of secondary data, limited variables, and a purely quantitative approach. Therefore, further research needs to extend the period, enrich the variables, and integrate mixed methods.

Abstract

The community service programme in Karangharjo Village, Rembang Regency, was implemented through a pilot workshop on ship repair as an effort to improve the capacity and technical skills of coastal fishermen. The main problems faced by local fishermen were a lack of understanding of ship diesel engine maintenance, limited access to repair workshops, and the use of manual techniques that risked engine damage. This community service activity was designed with a group-based approach, local potential, and comprehensive intervention, including training in engine maintenance and repair, practical use of workshop equipment, tool management inventory, and the construction of a community-based shipyard workshop. The results of the activity showed an increase in fishermen's skills in performing routine maintenance, managing workshop equipment, and readiness to manage workshops independently. This programme supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). With the establishment of synergy between universities, village governments, and fishermen's groups, this workshop initiative is expected to increase the independence, business sustainability, and economic resilience of coastal communities.

Abstract

The implementation of value-added tax (VAT) policy holds significant sway over state revenue. This study delves into the impact of value-added tax on economic growth and inequality within Indonesia. Panel data spanning from 2017 to 2021, encompassing 34 provinces, was scrutinized using the panel vector error correction model alongside the Sobel test. The study's findings reveal that while VAT directly affects per capita income, it exerts no discernible influence on inequality, either directly or indirectly. When subjected to the PVECM test, VAT shows no long-term impact on income. In contrast, domestic investment and the democracy index exhibit a positive and noteworthy effect on income levels. Notably, VAT and foreign investment do not demonstrably impact inequality. In the long run, it is per capita income, the democracy index, and domestic investment that bear influence. In the short term, however, none of these variables significantly affect inequality. It is worth mentioning that per capita income experiences a positive and substantial influence from the democracy index and domestic investment. This research furnishes policymakers with valuable insights to guide revenue management and allocation, thereby advancing economic development and addressing prevailing social challenges.
