Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) may lead to various complications, including cognitive impairment. The causative factor is the toxic substances accumulation in the body, including serum ureum and creatinine. This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum ureum and creatinine levels with cognitive function in CKD patients. Samples were taken using a consecutive sampling technique on 46 CKD patients who were hemodialyzed at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Indonesian version (MoCA-Ina). Serum ureum and creatinine were measured with a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results showed that CKD patients with cognitive impairment were more likely to be older than 50 years old (54.2%) and male (58.3%), had at least a high school education and above (70.8%), were accompanied by hypertension (75%), and without diabetes mellitus (91.7%). The median serum ureum and creatinine levels in patients with cognitive impairment were 124 mg/dL and 10.05 mg/dL. The relationship between serum ureum and creatinine levels with cognitive function had a 0.039 and 0.768 p-value. There is no relationship between the characteristics of the sample, including age, gender, education level, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus with cognitive function in CKD patients. There is a significant relationship between serum ureum levels and cognitive function, but a non-significant relationship between serum creatinine with the cognitive function of CKD patients.

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia, marked by progressive cognitive decline and neuropsychiatric disturbances collectively known as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Plasma phosphorylated tau at threonine-181 (pTau181) has emerged as a minimally invasive biomarker of tau-related neurodegeneration, but its association with BPSD remains uncertain. This study investigated the relationship between plasma pTau181 levels and BPSD in Alzheimer’s dementia. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in patients clinically diagnosed with predefined eligibility criteria. Plasma pTau181 concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while BPSD was assessed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q). Statistical analyses were performed to examine associations between plasma pTau181 and BPSD status. Plasma pTau181 levels ranged from 4.32 to 97.23 pg/mL, with a median plasma pTau181 level of 19.29 pg/mL (IQR: 11.81-25.05) in patients without BPSD and 20.67 pg/mL (IQR: 11.81-43.41) in those with BPSD. No significant differences in pTau181 levels were observed between patients with and without BPSD (p = 0.310). These findings suggest that plasma pTau181 may not be directly related to the presence of BPSD in Alzheimer’s dementia. While plasma pTau181 remains a promising biomarker of tau pathology, its predictive value for neuropsychiatric symptoms appears limited. Longitudinal studies are needed to explore its role in BPSD pathophysiology further.

Abstract

Fractures are a health issue that significantly impacts individuals’ quality of life. The Health Belief Model suggests that an individual's perception of disease and their belief in the effectiveness of a particular action will influence their health behavior. Economic factors are among the elements that affect community perceptions. These perceptions will determine how individuals manage fractures. Inappropriate management of fractures can lead to complications such as infections, gangrene, and neglected fractures. This study aims to to investigate the relationship between economic factors and community perception of fractures. The economic factors considered in this study are occupation and income. This study used primary data with analytical observational methods through a cross-sectional approach conducted in Padang Pariaman Regency from November 2023 to March 2024. The population in this study consists of the community in Padang Pariaman Regency, involving 390 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test. The results indicate a relationship between occupation and income factors and community perception of fractures (p=0,000). This study concludes that there is a relationship between economic factors and community perception of fractures in Padang Pariaman Regency.
