Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Despite growing evidence linking housing design to malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, quantitative CFD-based evidence on window screen effects within the Indonesian context remains scarce, particularly in endemic districts such as Sikka Regency. This study evaluates the effect of casement windows with and without mosquito screens on natural lighting performance and thermal conditions in dwellings, and assesses the potential implications for indoor microclimate conditions relevant to malaria vector activity. A case study of a PUPR model house in Sikka Regency was conducted using direct field measurements and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze airflow, temperature, and humidity distributions under two window scenarios. Results showed that screened windows reduced average natural lighting from 96 lux to 87 lux and increased indoor relative humidity by 13.51% (up to 68.03%) compared to unscreened windows. Unscreened windows produced more effective cross ventilation, more stable indoor temperatures, and lower humidity—conditions less conducive to mosquito persistence. Conversely, screened windows restricted airflow, triggered stagnant air zones, raised local temperatures, and increased humidity, conditions that may increase the likelihood of mosquito persistence or presence indoors. These findings suggest that passive window design decisions carry significant implications for indoor microclimate quality in malaria-endemic tropical dwellings, and should be integrated into healthy housing design guidelines for endemic regions.

Abstract

Organically developed commercial areas commonly exhibit diverse building geometries that influence the spatial character and visual quality of the urban environment. This study aims to identify and analyze the geometric typology of buildings along the Anggrek Street commercial corridor in Sikka Regency based on five geometric attributes: building position, orientation, basic form, form transformation, and visual inertia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through field observations of five representative buildings selected using purposive sampling to capture the diversity of geometric characteristics within the study area. The analysis adopted an architectural typology approach to examine the relationships among these geometric attributes in shaping the spatial character of the commercial corridor. The results indicate that the corridor is predominantly composed of semi-attached and attached building typologies, reflecting increasing land-use intensity. Building orientation facing the street corridor enhances urban legibility and the visibility of commercial activities. The basic forms are primarily rectangular and cuboid, which have evolved through additive and subtractive transformations in response to spatial requirements. Differences in visual inertia are influenced by mass composition, color, façade articulation, and signage. The findings demonstrate that the spatial character of the corridor is shaped primarily by geometric transformation rather than variations in basic building form. Unlike previous typological studies that primarily focus on planned commercial districts, this study develops an integrated framework consisting of five geometric attributes to interpret organically developed commercial corridors. This study contributes to the advancement of geometric typology research by providing empirical insights into organically developed commercial corridors in small emerging cities, offering a conceptual basis for future urban design and corridor planning.

Abstract

Abstract: The government's target of malaria freedom is known to have not yet reached the expected target, especially in eastern Indonesia such as Sikka district in East Nusa Tenggara. Some of the factors that influence the spread of mosquitoes include the influence of openings that are less than 1 meter apart. Based on this reference, field observations were made at a location with a similar case, namely Sikka police station. After observation, an experiment was conducted using Ecotect analysis by using a comparison of the distance of openings in the dwelling of 1 meter, 5 meters, and 10 meters to determine the wind pattern and speed that occurs in the area. The results found that the wind speed created showed that the distance does not affect the wind speed that occurs but rather affects the pattern of its distribution where the greater the distance between openings, will more diffuse the airflow pattern that will also affect the spread of mosquitoes in the surrounding area.
