Abstract

Problem-solving competence is crucial for prospective Madrasah Ibtidaiyah teachers in making instructional decisions. This study examined the influence of project-based learning on problem-solving skills within Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and identified supporting and inhibiting factors in a civic education instruction course. An embedded mixed-method design was applied to 46 prospective Madrasah Ibtidaiyah teachers at Universitas Islam Lamongan. Quantitative data were gathered through the Problem-Solving Inventory and problem-solving skills within the PCK test dimension. These data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, effect size, and N-gain. Qualitative data from observations, interviews, and documentation were thematically analyzed. Results indicated that project-based learning significantly enhanced problem-solving skills (p = 0.000), with a medium effect size (0.697) on the Problem Solving Inventory and a large effect size (0.87) on PCK. However, the N-gain score was relatively low (0.27). Qualitative findings reinforced these results, highlighting contextual learning, collaboration, critical thinking, systematic planning, reflection, lecturer support, resource availability, and field experience as enablers. At the same time, group dynamics, coordination with school teachers, and students’ initial readiness acted as barriers. This study underscores the potential of project-based learning to bridge theory and practice while fostering problem-solving skills among prospective Madrasah Ibtidaiyah teachers. Its novelty lies in exploring project-based learning across planning, implementation, and reflection, which represent enacted PCK (ePCK) within the Refined Consensus Model, as well as integrating collective PCK (cPCK) as content knowledge. Future research should involve larger samples, design project-based pedagogical modules, and examine long-term effects on both ePCK and cPCK development.

Abstract

Cultural awareness enables individuals to behave following social norms in various cultures. This research describes the practice of character cultivation by strengthening the Pancasila Berkebinekaan global student profile project at SDN Pagentan 3, focusing on recognizing and appreciating cultural diversity. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that cultivating character through the Pancasila Berkebinekaan global student profile project at SDN Pagentan 3 is centered around introducing and understanding values through traditional Indonesian dances, Indonesian cuisine, and traditional attire. This character cultivation involves three stages: 1) the moral knowing stage, achieved through the integration of the curriculum and global diversity values from relevant sources such as images and videos; 2) the moral feeling stage, where students are directly engaged in experiences such as sharing Indonesian cuisine, participating in traditional dances, and wearing traditional attire to foster pride in Indonesian culture and respect for cultural differences. 3) the moral action stage is fostered through activities encouraging students to express their opinions, collaborate, and acknowledge one another's achievements. This research is a reference for educators in designing character education programs to help students internalize global diversity values at the Elementary School level.

Abstract

(2-tailed) 0.000

Abstract

The essential need for character education development in the Operational Curriculum of Educational Units (KOSP) at SDN 3 Pagentan and SDN 2 Wonorejo is evident. However, the existing KOSP documents, initially adapted from another school due to a lack of knowledge in KOSP development, do not fully align with the characteristics and needs of the school community. This service empowers teachers in both schools to enhance their understanding of KOSP and develop documents enriched with the Strengthening Project for the Profile of Pancasila-Rahmatan lil Alamin Students (P5-RA), considering each school's unique characteristics and needs. Using a participatory action research (PAR) approach, the service involves problem identification, analysis, action preparation, program socialisation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The instruments include tests and assessment rubrics, revealing a significant improvement in teachers' knowledge of KOSP, with scores increasing from 71 to 80 in the moderate category. The service activities also produce a grand design of character integrated into KOSP documents enriched with P5-RA, developed by teachers in both schools based on their unique characteristics and needs. In summary, this service positively impacts teachers' knowledge and optimises the availability of KOSP documents enriched with P5-RA as guidelines for strengthening character education in schools.
