Abstract

Patient’s quality of life has been assessed for both pre-and post treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders. Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) is known for its validity in assesing oral health related quality of life. Its original form consists of 49 items which can be categorized into seven sub-domains. The need of having a more compact questionnaire has driven researchers to create shorter forms of OHIP49, which resulted OHIP-14 and OHIP-5. Clinical studies have been carried out to assess the psychometric value for the shorter form. However, its utilization for screening purposes needs to be evaluated in future studies.

Abstract

Oral health can affect general health and quality of life; therefore it is very important for the elderly to understand the importance of oral health. Physical decline in the elderly can be seen through sagging skin, hair discoloration, and loss of vision and teeth. This condition can be exacerbated by poor oral hygiene. Based on previous research, it has been found that of the 71% of elderly who brush their teeth every day, only 2.9% brush their teeth at the right time. Therefore, the counseling activity was carried out on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Mutiara Senja Elderly Community, Santo Andreas Church. The method used in the counseling was the lecture method and providing education through PowerPoint media. Evaluation of participant knowledge was carried out before and after the counseling by providing multiple-choice assessment sheets to determine the level of knowledge. Based on the evaluation results, it was found that there was an increase in the level of knowledge of the counseling participants. This can be seen in the average post-test score which increased compared to the pre-test score

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Early childhood malocclusion refers to the misalignment of teeth during the mixed dentition phase in children, which can affect breathing during sleep. One intervention for early childhood malocclusion is interceptive orthodontic treatment. This study aims to determine the relationship between the need for interceptive orthodontic treatment and Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) in children aged 8-11 years. Methods: This research is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample includes parents and their children aged 8-11 years (mixed dentition phase) who are attending Bukit Sion Elementary School. Inclusion criteria include parents with children aged 8-11 years in the mixed dentition phase at Bukit Sion Elementary School who are physically healthy. Exclusion criteria include children currently undergoing or having previously undergone orthodontic treatment and those who did not complete all required forms. Intraoral examinations were conducted on the children by dentists using the Indeks Kebutuhan Perawatan Ortodonti Interseptif (IKPO-I) form, while parents completed the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ). Results: A total of 76 students from Bukit Sion Elementary School, West Jakarta, participated in the study. The results of the examination using IKPO-I indicated that 47 children (61.8%) required interceptive orthodontic treatment. The results of the PSQ questionnaire revealed that 7 children (9.2%) were at high risk for SRBD. Statistical analysis with the Spearman correlation test showed no significant relationship between interceptive orthodontic treatment need and SRBD risk (p = 0.087; rs = 0.198). Conclusions: There is no correlation between interceptive orthodontic treatment need and pediatric SRBD in children aged 8-11 years. Further research employing more reliable measurement methods and tools is necessary to provide a clearer understanding of the relationship.KEY WORDS: Malocclusion, interceptive orthodontics, IKPO-I, mixed dentition, sleep-related breathing disorderKorelasi kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti interseptif dan Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder pada anak: Studi cross-sectionalABSTRAKPendahuluan: Maloklusi pada anak usia dini (early childhood malocclusion) adalah ketidaksejajaran gigi dalam periode gigi bercampur yang dapat memengaruhi pernapasan saat tidur. Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders are common issues that affect various age groups, including children and adolescents. In dentistry, a frequently encountered musculoskeletal disorder is temporomandibular disorder, which can significantly impact the quality of life of those affected. Schools play a crucial role in preventing and detecting musculoskeletal disorders among students. However, the literature indicates that teachers' knowledge regarding musculoskeletal disorders generally remains relatively low. Therefore, education and training programs must enhance teachers' understanding of these issues. As part of its commitment to health education, the Community Service Team (PkM) of Universitas Trisakti conducted an awareness program for 100 secondary school teachers at IPEKA Tomang. The program was carried out in two stages, focusing on general musculoskeletal and orofacial disorders. The evaluation results showed an improvement in teachers' understanding of both topics, which is expected to contribute to the prevention and early management of musculoskeletal disorders in schools.

Abstract

Obstructive airway disorders in children are common and hurt the child's development and quality of life. These disorders can also have long-term effects on children's health into adulthood. School teachers can be the first line of preventive efforts in children's health. Early detection of obstructive airway disorders is preventive care in children. This community service (PkM) aims to provide sufficient knowledge and skills to detect obstructive airway disorders in children. The training was given to 59 kindergarten and elementary school teachers at IPEKA BSD, which was divided into two topics: normal growth and disorders that occur in children and adolescents. The evaluation of activities showed a significant increase in knowledge of both topics. The low knowledge of breathing disorders can be increased significantly through this PkM activity. Good cooperation was also shown by the school, so that activities ran well and could be continued to become a sustainable routine activity.

Abstract

Bruxism is a repetitive masticatory muscle activity that has received attention in dental literature for its association with dental restoration failures, orofacial pain, neurological disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. As a determining factor in the diagnosis, parameters regarding the type and classification of intraoral and extraoral signs of probable bruxism are needed. This study aimed to identify the intraoral and extraoral signs of bruxism in the literature. A literature search was performed in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) to identify all the articles published assessing intra and extraoral signs of bruxism. The selected articles were then screened and structurally read by three persons and summarized in PICO tables. Out of 551 initially retrieved references, 39 articles met the inclusion criteria and were thus included in the scoping review. The studies were divided into six categories based on the type of oral signs: buccal mucosa ridge (n=4), masseter hypertrophy (n=3), tongue indentation (n=4), tooth fracture (n=5), torus mandibularis (n=3), and tooth wear (n=20). This study concluded that the available studies utilize various methods in subjective and clinical data collection. Buccal mucosa ridge, tongue indentation, and torus mandibularis were common in subjects with bruxism. The association of masseter hypertrophy and tooth fracture with bruxism is not conclusive. Although studies on tooth wear in bruxism subjects are the most prevalent among other oral signs, no study has been able to establish a direct link between bruxism and tooth wear.

Abstract

Introduction: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a tooth-colored restorative material that is often used by clinical practitioners because it can release fluoride, is easy to apply to teeth and has minimal preparation techniques. The erosion and moisture-sensitive nature of GIC becomes a problem for a long-lasting aesthetic restoration. Therefore, modifications were made to improve its mechanical properties by adding nanochitosan (NCH) from horn beetle (Xylotrupes gideon). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding horn beetle nanochitosan to GIC liquid on the surface hardness and compared with conventional GIC. Methods: Forty cylindrical samples of GIC (GC Fuji® IX Extra, Tokyo-Japan, Lot 1912201) with a diameter of 4 mm and a thickness of 6 mm were divided into 4 groups, namely the GIC control group, GIC modified with 0.5wt%, 1wt%, 2 wt% nanochitosan. Each sample was immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours and 7 days. Surface hardness before and after immersion was tested using a Vickers Microhardness tester (Shimadzu, Japan). The data were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test to determine the effect of horn beetle nanochitosan addition and the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked test to determine the effect of immersion time on GIC surface hardness. Results: The Kruskal Wallis statistical test showed significant difference (p<0.05) between the control group and the 24 hours treatment group with the addition of 2wt% nanochitosan, which was the highest surface hardness value (133.1 ± 49.0 HV), followed by 1wt% (127.4 ± 25.5 HV) and 0.5wt% (117.7 ± 22.5 HV). The Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked test statistic also showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the 24-hour and 7-day immersion time with the surface hardness value at 24 hours immersion greater than 7 days. Conclusion: The addition of 0.5wt%, 1wt% and 2wt% horn beetle nanochitosan can increase the GIC surface hardness value.

Abstract

Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal disorders involving the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and associated structures. The etiology of temporomandibular disorders is complex and multifactorial. Parafunctional activities are considered main factors that are associated with TMD. Objective: To examine the association between parafunctional habits and temporomandibular disorders in adolescence. Methods: An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was carried out on 443 children (236 men and 207 women) aged 12-13 years. The data obtained consisted of univariate and bivariate data on parafunctional habits and temporomandibular disorders based on the results of the adolescent’s questionnaire V.2. The data were analyzed by Chi-square test. Result: Bivariate analysis showed a significant association (p <0.05) between sleep clenching and awake clenching with temporomandibular pain (p = 0.047 and p = 0.001). A significant association was found between sleep grinding and biting the lips / cheeks habits with joint sounds (click / pop) (p = 0.045 and p = 0.020). Analysis of the association between sleep grinding and sleep clenching with limited jaw motion also showed a significant association (p = 0.014 and p = 0.004). Conclusion: There are associations between clenching and temporomandibular pain; sleep grinding and biting the lips / cheeks with joint sounds (click / pop); and between sleep bruxism and limited jaw motion.

Abstract

Background: Denture base acrylic resin properties is susceptible to bacteria colonization which further induce post insertion problems. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Cinnamomum burmanii extract against Staphylococcus aureus on heat-cured acrylic resin denture base material. Materials and method: An in vitro post-test only control group design was used with 28 acrylic resin plates (9x9x3 mm) contaminated with S. aureus (0.5 McFarland). Samples were randomly divided into seven groups (n=4): positive control (0.2% chlorhexidine), negative control (aquades), and five treatment groups immersed in C. burmanii extract at concentrations of 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, and 1.56%. Immersion was performed for 8 hours, after which bacterial colony counts were determined using the Total Plate Count method. Results: Phytochemical screening of the extract showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and triterpenoids. All concentrations of C. burmanii extract reduced S. aureus colonies compared to the negative control, with a significant overall difference among groups. The 25% concentration demonstrated the lowest mean colony count and showed an antibacterial effect approaching that of 02% chlorhexidine. Conclusion: These findings suggest that C. burmanii extract, particularly at 25% concentration, has potential as a natural denture cleanser alternatives for reducing S. aureus colonization on acrylic resin bases.

Abstract

A person who has reached the elderly stage will have an experienced degenerative process that causes several disorders. Changes in the masticatory function due to the loss of the remaining teeth can cause a transformation not only in the mastication system but also in the upper airway system of respiration. This is due to orofacial deformation, tongue retraction while in the resting position, occlusal vertical dimension changes, and a decrease in facial height. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep breathing disorder with 17 % prevalence rate in adults and increases up to 49% in the elderly stage. A complete denture can be a rehabilitative treatment option for the elderly OSA patient. Wearing dentures during sleep is against the principles of dentistry because it can cause the tongue to be positioned posteriorly. However, people, mostly women, still wears denture while sleeping. This might further increase the obstruction of upper airway system.
