Abstract

Code-switching and code-mixing are widespread linguistic practices that naturally occur in bilingual and multilingual communities. Within sociolinguistics, these phenomena are not only observed in direct face-to-face communication but also increasingly in online interactions, particularly on informal digital platforms such as WhatsApp. This study focuses on the IELTS Republic WhatsApp group, which consists of job seekers, scholarship applicants, and individuals preparing for the IELTS examination. The main objective of this research is to analyze and explore the kinds and contexts of code-switching and code-mixing employed by group members in their daily online interactions. The researchers adopted a qualitative descriptive design by applying a digital ethnography approach. Data were collected from group conversations that took place between 2023 and 2025. The discourse analysis method was then used to examine instances of code-switching and code-mixing, with a specific focus on identifying their forms and categorizing their functions. The analysis revealed that all three types of code-switching—intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching—appeared with relatively equal dominance, alongside frequent occurrences of code-mixing. These practices were not random but rather motivated by pragmatic, cognitive, and social purposes. Pragmatically, code alternation facilitated clarity, emphasis, and effective communication. Cognitively, it reflected speakers’ ease in accessing multiple linguistic repertoires. Socially, it allowed members to demonstrate solidarity, express identity, and construct group belonging. The findings highlight that code-switching and code-mixing in digital communities function as important linguistic strategies that enable multilingual speakers to navigate complex communicative needs while negotiating identity in an online environment. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of language practices in digital ethnography and provides valuable insights for further research on multilingual communication in virtual spaces, especially in contexts where English functions as a global lingua franca.

Abstract

The use of English songs has been widely discussed as an alternative medium in English language teaching. Songs are believed to create a more enjoyable learning atmosphere and increase students’ motivation, especially in online learning contexts. This study aimed to explore university students’ perceptions of integrating English songs into online English language teaching. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at Universitas Negeri Makassar with first semester students from the Management Study Program who attended an online English language course. The course was delivered fully online using Zoom over one academic semester. English songs were integrated as supporting instructional media during online classes, such as for warm-up activities, listening exposure, and background media. Data were collected through semi-structured written interviews and non-participant observation. The data were analysed using thematic analysis to identify recurring themes related to students’ perceptions. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions toward the use of English songs in online English classes. English songs were perceived to increase students’ motivation and create a more relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Students also reported higher engagement and attention during online classes when songs were used. In addition, English songs were perceived to support language learning, particularly in improving listening comprehension and vocabulary awareness. However, some challenges were also identified, such as difficulty understanding fast song lyrics, differences in music preferences, and technical issues during online learning. In conclusion, this study suggests that integrating English songs into online English language teaching can provide motivational and pedagogical benefits when used appropriately. English songs can be considered as a supportive instructional medium to enhance students’ engagement and learning experience in online higher education contexts.

Abstract

Public sector reform in Indonesia has introduced a dual employment system within the Aparatur Sipil Negara (ASN), consisting of permanent civil servants (Pegawai Negeri Sipil/PNS) and contractual civil servants (Pegawai Pemerintah dengan Perjanjian Kerja/PPPK). Although this policy aims to improve workforce flexibility and address staffing needs, it has generated various public responses related to fairness, job security, and professional recognition. These responses are increasingly expressed through social media which functions as an important space for public discussion and opinion formation. This study analyzes public perceptions of PNS and PPPK in Indonesia through social media discussions. A qualitative content analysis method was applied to publicly available posts and comments from X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok during the period 2024–2025. Individual posts and comments were used as units of analysis and coded thematically to identify dominant narratives and recurring issues. PPPK employees are often perceived as having lower job security and social status, while PNS employees are associated with stability and prestige. At the same time, many social media users express criticism toward government policy implementation, particularly regarding financial capacity, transparency, and perceived favoritism. Social comparison between PPPK and PNS further strengthens stigma and symbolic inequality within the civil service system. This study concludes that public sector reform should be understood not only as an administrative change but also as a social issue shaped by public perceptions. Analyzing social media discourse provides valuable insights for policymakers in improving communication strategies, policy implementation, and public trust in ASN reforms.

Abstract

This study explores the meaning of millennial consumers' shopping experience on TikTok live shopping through a phenomenological qualitative approach. The study involved millennial consumers who actively participate in TikTok live shopping to understand the construction of their personal meaning towards the digital shopping experience. The findings reveal that millennial consumers interpret live shopping as a form of experiential consumption that integrates the dimensions of entertainment, social interaction, and commercial transactions. The process of meaning-formation is influenced by real-time interactivity factors, community dynamics, and hedonistic-utilitarian value balance. Consumers develop trust through parasocial relationships with hosts and collective validation of the community. The study identified the transformation of consumer behavior from deliberate decision-making to intuitive purchasing influenced by social and emotional stimuli. Theoretical implications include contributions to the consumer behavior and social commerce literature, while practical implications provide insights for the development of live commerce strategies that are responsive to millennial consumer expectations in the digital marketplace ecosystem.

Abstract

Scientific writing is an essential competency that must be mastered by university students, particularly in managing citations and references in accordance with academic standards. However, many students still face difficulties in producing consistent and accurate citations due to limited understanding and lack of utilization of supporting technologies. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of Management students at Universitas Negeri Makassar (Class of 2023) in using Mendeley as a reference management tool. The training was conducted online via Zoom using lecture, demonstration, and hands-on training methods. The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ understanding of citation concepts and reference management, as well as their practical ability to use Mendeley for automatic citation and bibliography generation. Furthermore, the interactive online training approach proved to be effective in enhancing participant engagement and learning outcomes. This activity contributes to improving students’ academic literacy and supports the development of higher-quality scientific writing in accordance with academic standards.
