Abstract

Maintaining the performance of a quality employee is the biggest challenge of the 4-star hotel industry in Malang City. The pandemic has caused hotels to experience a crisis due to a massive decline in occupancy. The economic crisis has made hotel management pay less attention to employee welfare during a hotel's recovery period. Employee welfare is a trigger for the expected performance instability. This study adopts an explanatory method with a quantitative approach. The study includes 242 participants employed in three 4-star hotels in Malang City. A sample of 151 respondents is chosen through stratified random sampling. Path analysis is used for data analysis. The results indicate that affective commitment, non-physical work environments, and servant leadership substantially impact employee performance. The association between employee performance and servant leadership may be partly influenced by affective commitment. However, affective commitment does not mediate the relationship between worker performance and the non-physical work environment.

Abstract

This conceptual paper examines how the integration of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can drive sustainable workforce transformation in Indonesia’s emerging market context, with specific reflection on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Responding to the parallel pressures of digitalization and sustainability, the study adopts a conceptual–descriptive design based on an integrative review of literature published between 2018 and 2024 on GHRM, AI in HRM, sustainable HRM, and SME transformation in emerging economies. Drawing on approximately 20 core scholarly and policy sources, the paper develops the GHRM–AI Sustainable Workforce Framework, which links leadership commitment, green HR practices, AI-enabled HR processes, and employee green–digital capabilities to economic, environmental, and social outcomes. The framework proposes that leadership commitment to sustainability and responsible AI use shapes the design of green HR processes, AI technologies amplify the effectiveness and measurability of these processes, and employee capabilities mediate their impact on triple-bottom-line performance. Contextual reflection on SMEs in Makassar highlights both opportunities such as growing digital adoption and policy support and constraints, including limited HR structures, capability gaps, and financial and infrastructural barriers. The paper contributes theoretically by extending GHRM discourse into the domain of AI-enabled digital transformation and practically by offering a strategic roadmap for SMEs, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to align HR strategies with sustainability and digital agendas. It also outlines directions for future empirical research to test, refine, and operationalize the proposed framework in diverse organizational and regional settings.

Abstract

The management of used cooking oil remains a serious environmental issue, as it is classified as hazardous waste that can contaminate soil and water if disposed of improperly. On the other hand, used cooking oil holds high economic potential and can be utilized through the circular economy concept to create value-added products. This community service program aimed to enhance the awareness and skills of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Makassar, in processing used cooking oil into aromatherapy candles as a form of green entrepreneurship. The training was conducted through socialization, education, demonstration, and hands-on practice using purified used cooking oil mixed with stearic acid and essential oils. Evaluation results showed that 85% of participants improved their understanding of waste management and candle-making techniques, while 72% expressed interest in developing this product as a sustainable business idea supported by digital marketing. This activity successfully integrated environmental education, entrepreneurial innovation, and student empowerment through the application of circular economy principles. Therefore, the program not only provided a solution to the waste oil problem but also fostered sustainable and socially responsible entrepreneurial mindsets among students.
