Abstract

This study aims to investigate the implementation of the audiolingual method in teaching Arabic listening skills at SMPIT Adzkia Padang during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through structured observations and in-depth interviews with eighth-grade students and Arabic language teachers. The findings reveal that the audiolingual method positively impacts students' listening skills, with nearly 90% of students being able to memorize, recall, and use the sentences or texts taught. However, online learning and time constraints posed challenges to the optimal application of this method. Teacher perceived the audiolingual method as less effective for online learning and suggested that lecture-based methods were more suitable for explaining theoretical concepts. The study also found that the Arabic learning guidebook needed to be aligned with the students' proficiency levels, which hindered the learning process. These findings provide educators with insights regarding the audiolingual method's strengths and limitations, emphasizing the importance of adapting teaching methods to the context and students' needs.

Abstract

In interacting and communicating, the use of language plays a very important role. However, there are still many who experience misunderstandings in communicating in everyday life. This is due to the very broad scope of language meaning, as well as differences in language styles between individuals. There are various factors that influence this difference, such as environment, education level, gender, and so on. The purpose of this study is to identify a difference in language style between men and women. Based on the results of observations made by researchers, compared to men, women tend to look very expressive. In this study, it can be seen that there are differences in language between men and women. In terms of social position, it seems that men dominate women. Men have the freedom to speak directly, while women often do not. Men can interrupt conversations and use harsher language, while women are expected to maintain politeness and be gentle in speaking. This finding has significant implications for everyday social interactions. Differences in language styles for men and women can cause misunderstandings and tensions in interpersonal communication. In a broader context, this communication pattern reflects and reinforces gender inequality in society. This can impact power dynamics in the workplace, personal relationships, and participation in public spaces. Further research is needed to explore strategies that can bridge this communication gap and promote equality in verbal interactions between genders. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Language, Gender

Abstract

This study aims to discuss common errors in translating idioms found in the literary novel al-Hub tahta al-Mathar by Najib Mahfouz, which was translated into Indonesian under the title Rinai Cinta. There are discrepancies in meaning between the source language (Arabic) and the target language (Indonesian), resulting in misinterpretations for non-Arabic readers. This research is significant in preserving the authenticity of the source language and contributes to producing more accurate and high-quality translations. To analyze the types of translation errors, the researcher employed Mona Baker's translation theory from her book In Other Words. This study is a library research project utilizing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal 12 types of idiomatic translation errors in the novel. When analyzed using the theoretical framework, the translation does not align with the strategies proposed by Mona Baker, thus classifying these as "errors."

This study aims to delve into the sociolinguistic dynamics in the digital age, focusing particularly on the Minang language as a cultural emblem. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research meticulously delineates the distinctive features of the Minang language as an inseparable facet of cultural heritage. Methodologically, a literature review is employed to gather data from diverse secondary sources such as books, literature, and relevant media, subsequently subjecting them to content analysis techniques to decipher the meanings embedded in expert expressions and perspectives within the realm of scholarly discourse. The findings underscore the intricate impact of the digital era on the Minangkabau language and culture, encompassing the pervasive influence of technology and mass media on its usage, preservation, and evolution within society. The dynamics of urbanization and population mobility also wield significant influence, presenting challenges in preserving traditional cultural practices amidst the currents of modern urban life. To safeguard the rich tapestry of Minangkabau culture, concerted efforts are imperative, including educational initiatives rooted in local cultural values, leveraging digital technologies for cultural documentation and advocacy, alongside governmental support and active engagement from local communities.
