Abstract

This article tried to shed some light on how a radiology resident experienced challenges in using English during his study. Employing narrative inquiry, the data were collected from semi-structured interviews with a radiology resident currently studying at a state university in Indonesia. Meaningful experiences and insights were highlighted and elaborated. They were also discussed and corresponded with previous studies or existing theories. Understanding English textbooks with unfamiliar words made him spend longer time to understand English written materials. He was also required to publish articles in reputable journals and present papers in scientific forums. Meanwhile, he didn't have enough time due to his busy schedule at the hospital. He pointed out that basic English knowledge might helpful in the beginning, but once it got into specialty field of radiology there were many new terms to learn. Besides, willingness to learn English with fellow residents and from supporting tools were essential for success. He found some online tools very beneficial to make his work much easier and faster. However, those tools were still limited in some aspects and face-to-face learning activity was still needed. It implies the need for ESP learning design for busy residents which accommodates digital tools optimization and practical academic purposes.

Abstract

This article discussed the form of speech acts and language politeness in interaction among residents by focusing on the speeches containing the words "izin (permission)" and "mohon izin (I beg your permission)". Not only for asking permission, these words are used in various speech acts. The data for this study were taken from written conversations among residents through WhatsApp group application. The data were collected using documentation and interview. Then, the data were analyzed using the pragmatic equivalent method. The results of data analysis showed that the words "izin" and "mohon izin" were used in various speech acts, namely assertive, directive, commissive, declarative, and expressive. These words were the embodiment of negative politeness strategies by trying as little as possible to violate the negative face of the interlocutor. The forms of speech in junior and senior resident interactions used a combination of positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies. The use of these words was due to the desire to speak politely and to follow the prevailing customs. This study implied the importance of speaking politely in accordance with the customs or conventions that apply to certain communities. Keywords: pragmatics, politeness, residents, speech acts

Abstract

In the digital era, coding skills have become increasingly prevalent and are now taught in schools. This paper aims to illuminate parents' perceptions of coding education for elementary school students in Indonesia. The study focuses on eight parents who enrolled their children in a coding school in Central Java, Indonesia. To gather data, open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The collected data were subsequently analyzed thematically. The study revealed that parents held positive perceptions of coding skills for elementary school students. This positivity stemmed from their awareness of the rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the anticipation of the future impact of ICT skills, trust in the institution, and their children's interest in ICT. Furthermore, parents expressed positive perceptions of their children's progress, attributing it to improved coding skills and positive attitudes. They emphasized the importance of mutual collaboration and communication between parents and schools to enhance the learning experience. In addition to offering a coding curriculum, the school provided parents with up-to-date information about ICT through seminars and regular digital content distribution. The collaboration between the school and parents extended to establishing rules regarding the use of mobile phones and PCs to prevent potential harms from excessive device usage. This suggests that the success of coding education for children necessitates effective collaboration between parents and schools.

Abstract

Previous studies have associated tumor size with metastasis and prognosis in lung carcinoma; however, a precise cut-off for predicting distant metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the cut-off point for predicting distant metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Dr. Moewardi Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia from January 2022 to September 2023. Total sampling was employed, involving patients over 18 years old with a confirmed diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma based on lung computed tomography (CT) scan findings, who had not yet received chemotherapy and had confirmed metastasis outside the lung. The study's dependent variable was the incidence of distant metastasis, while the independent variable was lung adenocarcinoma size. Two experienced thoracic radiologists measured lung adenocarcinoma size by assessing the longest axis using chest multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) in the lung window setting. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis determined the optimal tumor size cut-off for predicting distant metastasis. From a total of 956 thoracic cancer patients, 108 were diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 89 patients were eligible. In the present study, tumor size predicted 68.1% of distant metastasis cases, with a cut-off point of 7.25 cm, yielding a sensitivity of 61.9% and a specificity of 61.5%. Tumors >7.25 cm had a 2.60-fold higher risk of distant metastasis compared to smaller tumors, with larger tumors more likely to spread to various sites. In conclusion, lung adenocarcinomas larger than 7.25 cm have a 2.60-fold increased risk of distant metastasis, making tumor size a crucial predictive factor. The study provides valuable insights for radiologists and can improve diagnosis accuracy and treatment planning by emphasizing tumor size as a key factor in managing lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract

Patellar height, which represents distance formed by the patella and the length of patellar tendon, can predict various knee joint problems. The Insall-Salvati (IS), Caton-Deschamps (CD), and Blackburne-Peel (BP) ratios are widely used to measure patellar height. Those methods conveyed various levels of variability and reproducibility. However, no method perfectly defines the true patellar height in relation to the tibiofemoral joint with high reproducibility and minimal variability. The study involved x-rays of 15 left-knee joints of Indonesian women across various ages without any history of knee injury. Patellar height was measured using the IS, CD, and BP methods (three times of measurement for each method). Patellar height was classified into infera, norma, and alta based on Indonesian measurement standard. The average measurement ratios were analyzed descriptively to obtain the conclusion. The IS ratio identified a patella norma in 14 subjects and a patella infera in 1 subject. The CD ratio indicated 12 subjects with a patella norma, 2 subjects with a patella alta and 1 subject with a patella infera. The BP ratio resulted in a patella norma in 8 subjects and a patella alta in 7 subjects. Discrepancies in the subgroups were varied. Patella norma from IS ratio confirmed by CD and BP ratios resulted in a percentage of 33%. The IS method combined with the CD method yielded a percentage of 67% with p(IS-CD) = 0.915. The combination of IS-BP and CD-BP methods yielded 53% with p(IS-BP) = 0.02 and 40% with p(CD-BP) = 0.052 respectively. The results show a method-dependent disparity in patellar height measurement. Single IS ratio provides a smaller percentage than its combination with CD or BP ratio. The combination with the highest percentage was obtained between IS and CD ratios. This study implied the measurement of patellar height precisely in various genu joint problems, such as predicting progression of patellofemoral osteoarthritis, pain of the genu joint, and luxation or subluxation of the patella. A future study can involve a larger number of subjects.

Abstract

BackgroundStress is the body’s inability to reach a balance between physical or psychological demands and the ability to meet them. Failure to meet these demands has a crucial impact which includes physical, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Recitation of the Quran is believed to cause relaxation by lowering adrenocorticotropic and cortisol hormonal levels. This study aimed to assess the effects of Quran recitation on stress levels using the biofeedback indicators electromyogram, skin conductance, and heart rate among healthy adults. MethodsThis study used a pre- and post-test group design involving 40 males between 19 and 23 years of age, randomized into two groups, i.e. control group (n=20) and Quran recitation listeners (n=20). The subjects were conditioned in a quiet room for 30 minutes before the stress level measurements were taken. The stress level measurements by means of electromyogram, skin conductance, and heart rate were performed with biofeedback before and after giving the stressor tests’ protocol. Statistical analysis using independent t-test was then performed. ResultsThe baseline comparative measurement using biofeedback between control and treatment groups revealed nonsignificant between-group differences in electromyogram, skin conductance, and heart rate (p=0.150; p= 0.389; and p=0.985 respectively). After applying the stress protocol followed by the intervention, the independent t-test revealed significant between-group differences in electromyogram and skin conductance (p= 0.042 and p=0.030), but not in heart rate (p=0.741). ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that Quran recitation has a significant effect in relieving stress levels assessed using biofeedback parameters (electromyogram and skin conductance) among healthy adults.

Abstract

Degenerative lumbar spine disease is a leading cause of disability, reducing patient's quality of life. However, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), the primary diagnostic modality, is not routinely feasible due to high cost and limited availability. Routine anteroposterior (AP) and lateral plain radiographs remain inferior to MRI, highlighting the need for alternative modalities such as vertebral dynamic radiography (flexion-extension views) to assess intervertebral instability. This analytic observational study used a cross-sectional design analyzing 42 patients at RSUD Dr. Moewardi (February 2019 - February 2020) with MRI-confirmed degenerative disease, the study compared findings of spondylolisthesis, vacuum disk phenomenon, osteophytes, and intervertebral space narrowing. Statistical analysis obtained p-value <0.05, demonstrating that dynamic radiographs possess higher sensitivity for detecting degenerative diseases of the spine than conventional views. Furthermore, the vacuum disk phenomenon was most prevalent in extension radiographs and least frequent in flexion. While osteophyte detection and intervertebral space narrowing remained consistent across both modalities, the dynamic study proved superior in assessing joint instability. The study concludes that there was a significant difference in the findings of spondylolisthesis on dynamic lateral radiographs and conventional lateral radiographs.
