This condition comes to a problem because the practice is the real solution for funding source. On the other hand, its existence is problematic as it disturbs even endangers street users as well as the amal men. The primary data of this research is from observation and interview at two location of amal masjid in Pamekasan and Sumenep. This paper is going to answer three questions. First, to what extent does the amal masjid represent the identity of local Maduresse Moslems? Second, how do the Maduresse Muslim negotiate the amal masjid to the local government and other stakeholders? Third, how can the amal masjid be located as a distinctive local Muslim philanthropy and the blueprint on ideal philanthropy to the world?

Kata kunci: Amina Wadud, Al-Qur'an, hermeneutika

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic divides the attitudes of pesantren residents into three categories: very strict, very loose and moderate (tawassut). This moderate attitude is found in Pesma Al-Hikam and Pesantren Sabilurrosyad in Malang City. This article uses a qualitative approach, then analyzed from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s capital theory. The purpose is to describe how the attitudes, mindset, and residents’ behavior of Pesantren Tangguh related to symbolic, cultural, social, and economic modalities, to control the pandemic crisis. The findings of this article are Pesma Al-Hikam and Pesantren Sabilurrosyad as Pesantren Tangguh are representations of moderate Islamic educational institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of Bourdieu’s capital theory. First, the nationalist-religious; adaptive and inclusive; and philosophical-rational character in terms of symbolic capital. Second, the theological view that combines destiny and endeavors harmoniously; an elastic and comparative view of Islamic law; and Sufistic behavior that combines ritual and social worship in terms of cultural capital. Third, the behaviour of pesantren residents who remain active in carrying out activities at the pesantren but are disciplined in complying with health protocols in terms of social capital. Fourth, the economic independence of the pesantren in fulfilling the needs and social assistance to the peripheral community in terms of economic capital. In summary, the residents of Pesantren Tangguh show moderate character in aspects of attitude, mindset, and behavior related to symbolic, cultural, social, and economic modalities, enabling the pesantren residents to be able to control the Covid-19 pandemic crisis well.

Abstract

Previous studies have identified radical content in Islamic religious education (PAI) textbooks. However, no comprehensive examination of 12 PAI textbooks in Indonesian Islamic high schools (Madrasah Aliyah) has been conducted. This study aims to address two questions: (1) What forms of non-moderate interpretation threaten religious moderation? (2) What forms of moderate interpretation strengthen religious moderation? This qualitative study gathered data through documentation, interviews with PAI textbook authors, and discussions with PAI experts in scientific forums. Data were analyzed using an interactive model. The findings of this study identified three forms of non-moderate interpretations in PAI textbooks that threaten religious moderation: (1) Textual interpretations undermining national commitment (wataniyyah), obedience to legislation (dusturiyyah), and acceptance of tradition (urfiyyah); (2) Partial interprettations compromising equality (mubadalah), compassion (rahamutiyyah), and justice (adalah); (3) Monodimensional interpretations on benefit (maslahat), humanity (insaniyyah), and tolerance (tasamuh). Conversely, moderate interpretations that strengthen religious moderation include: (1) Contextual interpretations combining objective text meanings with relevant subjective contexts; (2) Holistic interpretations integrating comprehensive understanding of the Qur'an through the maudu’i (thematic) method with collective expert validation (taqrir jama’i); (3) Multidimensional interpretations merging insights from Islamic science experts (shar’i) with those from natural, social, and humanities sciences (kawni). The practical implications highlight the need for developing mufassir education programs to produce contextual interpretations, expanding scientific forums for holistic interpretations, and enhancing collaboration between shar’i and kawni experts for multidimensional interpretations

Abstract

Madurese translations of the Qur’an were written by three respective male teams. This triggers questions about how they render verses on women, mainly that literally seem contradictory to gender equality spirit. This article aims to portray how gender equality issues are put within the translations through content analysis technique on 8 verses of women in family law discourse. They discuss men and women’s position in a marriage ranging from issue of leadership, rebellion (nusyuz), sexual relationship, polygamy, divorce, to inheritance. Additionally, it also engages interview to representation of translators of the three. Borrowing Amina Wadud’s typologies of Qur’anic interpretation, it is found three types of translation, namely gender-bias, gender-neutral, and gender-friendly based mainly on how the three comparatively translated the verses. The second category is dominant followed by the first one implying that gender equality spirit within the translations is still low. This  stems from both technical and ideological factors, namely limited space to provide further explanation and perception on gender equality issue among the translators. The proportion of three types implies how translators’ perspective on gender issues directs the translation result which in turn potentially affects three realms, namely theoretical, practical and ideological. This article overall strengthens the notion on how male team mostly ignore women perspetive in making their works, including in the area of Islamic or specifically Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to discover how santri’s resistance within kitab kuning reading acceleration program recently popular in Madurese pesantren turns out to improve the program itself. Santris’ resistance becomes a big deal considering its contradiction to ethical unwritten rules in pesantren while the fact shows how this phenomenon strikes. For that purpose, genealogy of such programs is firstly identified along with characteristics of each to figure out how, beyond the existing diversities, the programs share the same pattern, including the common root and impact of resistance. Involving 240 informants from santri, ustad, and program providers, this mixed research expanded its data compilation with in-depth interviews engaging some selected informants as well as comprehensive desk review. The result discloses  pesantren networking in intellectual hub responding to nowadays challenges in the decrease of kitab kuning reading proficiency along with dynamics of resistance among santri, mainly in negotiation type through emotional, verbal, and physical expression. Despite the fact that resistance mutates along with punishment as a part of rule, it has less influence on the program accomplishment, implying how both program and its resistance based system improvement transform the way Islamic education takes place beyond the studens’ sort of transgression.
