Abstract

Breastfeeding should ideally begin immediately after birth and be provided exclusively for the first six months of life. However, in 2022, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding among infants aged 0–6 months in Jayapura was only 21%, which remains far below the national target of 45%. Various factors contribute to this low coverage, including limited knowledge, lack of experience, insufficient support systems, and concerns among adolescent mothers that breastfeeding may interfere with their education or employment. This study aimed to explore the breastfeeding experiences of adolescent mothers in Wahno Village, Abepura Subdistrict. A qualitative research design was used, with structured interviews conducted using a questionnaire. The results indicated that the initiation of exclusive breastfeeding among adolescent mothers was generally positive. Participants reported mixed emotional experiences, including feelings of happiness, pride, stress, and discomfort. Family support, particularly from husbands, played an important role in sustaining breastfeeding practices. Most respondents also demonstrated adequate knowledge regarding how to manage breastfeeding-related challenges. Overall, adolescent mothers in Wahno Village showed a reasonable level of understanding and commitment toward exclusive breastfeeding. Continued education and support are recommended to further strengthen breastfeeding practices among adolescent mothers and their families.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between Body Fat Percentage (BFP) and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as the influence of energy, carbohydrate, and fat intake on BMI among older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 35 elderly individuals (7 males, 28 females). BFP was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), macronutrient intake data were obtained through standardized food recall 24-hour and statistical analyses employed Pearson correlation. The mean BMI of subjects was 21.48 ± 3.13 kg/m² (normal range), whereas the mean BFP of 30.48 ± 8.15% approached the obesity threshold. Based on BMI classification, 11.4% of subjects were underweight and 8.6% were overweight. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive association between BFP and BMI (r = 0.527; p = 0.001) of moderate strength, with BMI accounting for only 27.8% of BFP variance. Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that energy intake significantly predicted BMI (p = 0.034), whereas carbohydrate (p = 0.725) and fat intake (p = 0.399) did not exert significant independent effects. The moderate BMI–BFP correlation confirms the limitations of BMI as a sole indicator of body composition in older adults, underscoring the clinical necessity of integrating direct BFP measurement to detect normal weight obesity. Nutritional interventions for the elderly should prioritize achieving adequate total energy intake rather than restricting individual macronutrients

Abstract

Anaemia in pregnancy constitutes a significant global public health issue, influenced by various risk factors such as maternal age and nutritional status. Nutritional issues during pregnancy impacts maternal and fetal health, necessitating careful consideration. An insufficient diet in the antenatal period can predispose to maternal malnutrition, subsequently affecting anaemia. The research was conducted to explore the correlation between nutritional status with anaemia’s prevalence among women in pregnancy at the Abepura Primary Care Facility. This research uses a cross-sectional approach with a descriptive correlational design. Conducted at Abepura Health Centre. The study population comprised all pregnant women who visited the Abepura Health Centre in 2022, totalling 714, with a sample size of 258. Sampling methodology utilising simple random sampling. Data acquisition through questionnaires derived from cohort studies of pregnant women. The chi-square test yielded a p-value of 0.041, indicating statistical significance at the 0.05 level. This finding suggests a meaningful association maternal nutritional well-being and anaemia’s prevalence at the Abepura Health Centre. The odds ratio obtained is OR 1.672 (CI 95% 1.020-2.742), indicating that pregnant women with poor nutritional status are 1.672 times more at risk of anaemia compared to those with adequate nutritional status. Enhance health service initiatives for pregnant women, particularly for those with anaemia, and closely monitor maternal nutritional well-being to promptly address any cases of malnutrition.
