Abstract

This research discusses the relation between Islam and the State among Muslim scholars. Many discuss the relation between Islam and the State from Sharia and historical viewpoints. However, this study examines the relation from education standpoint. The literature research looks at academic publications from prominent Muslim scholars around the world. This research asserts that the study on relation between Islam dan the State can be divided into three main categories: integrative, substantive and secular. In relation to education, those studies reveal that educational institutions attempt to align their teaching ideology with the ideology of its founder or stakeholders. Despite their significant differences, all Muslim scholars derive their thought and discussion from thelogical foundation of Al-Qur’an and Hadith. They also seem to show a common ground in defining Islamic Education. Nevertheless, Islamic education institutions present various views on teaching the ideology in relation between Islam and the State, from moderate teaching to radical teaching or understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the Islamic Education model developed by 3 high school education institutions in Indonesia, related to the facts of diversity. Because this study seeks to explore the meaning of the object of research, the qualitative approach was chosen through searching for interview data, observation and documentation studies. The results showed that the 3 educational institutions studied, using Grimmit's classification of religious education, showed more characteristics of religious education than learning about religion and learning from religion. The religious education developed is only focused on maintaining traditions that have been carried out for generations. In addition, using the Symour classification, religious education developed by 3 educational institutions shows more characteristics of religious education "in the wall", compared to "at the wall", and "beyond the wall". The religious education developed is only focused on the internal teachings of religion, without a curriculum to recognize the basic foundations of other religions. This condition can lead to "truth claims", and "prejudice" against other religions. This study also offers the idea that in order to foster harmony, it is time for Educational Institutions in Indonesia to develop “at the wall” and “beyond the wall” religious education curricula.

Abstract

Purpose – This study intends to unravel aspects related to education in local religions. There are three (3) intercorrelated things regarding education in local religions, namely discrimination, value education, and social movements. Design/methods/approach – This study is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data source was obtained from the results of in-depth interviews and observations of members and traditional elders of three (3) local religions in Indonesia. The analysis used was a descriptive one. Findings – The three local religions studied often experience discrimination, especially in the aspect of education. This discrimination encourages them to spread the values education so that its existence continues to survive. The values education is an essential vehicle in carrying out social movements. Research implications/limitations – This study was limited to three local religions in Indonesia. The diversely abundant local religions in Indonesia allow for different dynamics between each other, related to discrimination in religious education, values education they uphold, and new social movements they bring about. Originality/value – The majority of scholars have studied various local religions to uncover their diverse religious teachings. Additionally, numerous studies also have discussed varied discriminations against religion. However, they are mostly related to discrimination in the aspect of citizenship rights that they should have. This research is more focused on discrimination in education, as well as the related elements, namely values education and new social movements, to overcome this discrimination.

Abstract

Modernity can erode traditional values, particularly religion. Local religions often reflect community cultural values more prominently, resulting in stronger traditional aspects than mainstream religions. This research investigates the educational principles established by Madrais, the founder of the Javanese-Sundanese Religion (Agama Djawa-Soenda/ADS), aimed at the indigenous population regarding resistance to modernity. Central to ADS is the promotion of harmony with the natural environment. Nevertheless, this principle can also be examined through the lens of resistance to modernity and the potential imposition of external values that may jeopardize the integrity of their traditional beliefs, including foreign religions. Viewed in this context, ADS represents a dual commitment to environmental sustainability and safeguarding traditional cultural values. The analytical framework is grounded in value education theory and the theory of modernity rationalization. Data for this study were collected through a literature review of manuscripts authored by Madrais, alongside interviews with prominent figures within the ADS community. The findings indicate that the teachings of ADS inherently reflect a robust resistance to modernity. This resistance is particularly evident in three key tenets: rejecting all forms of colonialism, encouraging harmony with nature and returning to authentic human identity, and the imperative to honor and protect customs and traditions. These three principles are interconnected and share a common underlying ethos. This study highlights the importance of providing insights into the traditional aspects of local religions as a strong foundation for preserving traditions amidst the onslaught of modernity.

Abstract

Reinterpretation the Concept of Heretic toward the Transformative of Islam. This articles aims to reinterpret the concept of heretic (bidah) with a philosophical approach, based on the concept of the transformative of Islam proposed by Moeslim Abdurrahman. The data were collected through library research of the whole concept of heresy, both conservative and moderate then analyzed based on the concept of the conceptual, sociological and antropological approach. This paper found the need to think philosophically about the concept of heretic, by finding the basic purpose of the revealed of religion, so that there is no contradiction between one doctrine and another. Thus, heresy is no longer as the burden of history of Muslim creativity and innovation, but it is indeed the impetus to find breakthroughs in the settlement of various social problems of society.
