Abstract

This study aims to explore the Islamic Education model developed by 3 high school education institutions in Indonesia, related to the facts of diversity. Because this study seeks to explore the meaning of the object of research, the qualitative approach was chosen through searching for interview data, observation and documentation studies. The results showed that the 3 educational institutions studied, using Grimmit's classification of religious education, showed more characteristics of religious education than learning about religion and learning from religion. The religious education developed is only focused on maintaining traditions that have been carried out for generations. In addition, using the Symour classification, religious education developed by 3 educational institutions shows more characteristics of religious education "in the wall", compared to "at the wall", and "beyond the wall". The religious education developed is only focused on the internal teachings of religion, without a curriculum to recognize the basic foundations of other religions. This condition can lead to "truth claims", and "prejudice" against other religions. This study also offers the idea that in order to foster harmony, it is time for Educational Institutions in Indonesia to develop “at the wall” and “beyond the wall” religious education curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the presence of a transformation process, dynamics, and conflicting thoughts inside three Islamic Higher Education institutions in Indonesia. Subsequently, an analysis is conducted to examine the ramifications of this transformation and dynamics on the state life of Indonesian citizens. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data were acquired through interviews conducted with actors from three PTKIs (K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, and UIN Walisongo Semarang), as well as through observation and documentation studies. The collected data were further analysed through an inductive process using indicators that assess rational and traditional religious perspectives. The findings reveal that the three Islamic Higher Education institutions underwent a transformation from conventional religious beliefs to rational ones. Within this transformation process, dynamics and conflicts of thought inevitably emerged. The findings show that such dynamics not only influence the development of religious education within PTKIs but also shape the broader life of the Indonesian state. In this regard, PTKIs play a strategic role in shaping education policy and social life, particularly by promoting inclusive curricula, fostering tolerance, and strengthening community empowerment in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia is still facing serious challenges in waste management. The World Bank’s Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals reported that Indonesia ranks fifth among the world’s largest waste-producing countries. Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in July 2024 recorded a total of 35.1 million tons of national waste, with 38.6% (13.5 million tons) managed and 61.4% (21.6 million tons) unmanaged. This situation highlights the urgency of long-term solutions through education from an early age. This study aims to analyze the role of ecopedagogy in cultivating green character through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in the context of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) waste management at the elementary school level. The study employed a library research method by reviewing primary and secondary sources such as journal articles, dissertations, proceedings, and official reports. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques through reduction, classification, and synthesis of theories. The findings reveal that ecopedagogy serves as a philosophical foundation for ecological critical awareness, PBL as an active learning strategy based on real problems, and green character as the ultimate goal reflected in environmentally responsible behavior. The integration of these three aspects culminates in 3R practices in elementary schools, which not only enhance cognitive understanding but also foster affective attitudes and psychomotor skills. This study concludes that the integration of ecopedagogy, PBL, and green character can serve as an effective environmental education model for developing environmentally conscious and sustainable generations.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the worship model of Agama Djawa Soenda (ADS) from the perspective of Islamic education. This research focuses on how spiritual and moral values in ADS can contribute to character-building in Islamic education. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and participatory observation of ADS adherents and document studies. The data were analyzed descriptively to explore the similarities and differences between ADS worship practices and Islamic education. The results show that, substantively, ADS has many similarities with Islam, especially in the aspects of divinity, environmental preservation, respect for parents, and nationalism. However, there are differences in the technical aspects of worship, where ADS is more influenced by local Javanese culture, while Islam follows standardized worship procedures based on sharia. The study concludes that the noble values of ADS, such as nature conservation and social ethics, have the potential to be integrated into Islamic education without having to sacrifice the basic principles of Sharia. This research offers a new contribution to understanding the interaction between local religion and Islamic education, as well as the importance of an inclusive approach in education that respects religious and cultural diversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the educational perspectives within Islam and the Java-Sundanese Indigenous Religion (Agama Djawa Sunda/ADS), focusing on the interplay between rationality and mysticism. Employing a qualitative approach, this study involves literature reviews on the core beliefs of both religions and in-depth interviews with key figures of ADS. The findings of this study reveal that both Islam and ADS incorporate elements of rationality and mysticism. In ADS, mysticism is reflected in traditional practices such as weddings and circumcisions, while in Islam, mysticism is found among groups such as Salafis and Puritanists, who rely on strict textual interpretations, often leading to radicalism. Conversely, the rational aspect of Islam is reflected in progressive interpretations by Islamic scholars, while ADS rationality is demonstrated through its teachings on nationalism and multiculturalism. The distinction between rationality and mysticism is not clear-cut but rather complementary. This study aims to strengthen the religious education curriculum by introducing different religions and incorporating both rational and mystical aspects a balanced proportion.

Abstract

This study aims to trace the Walisongo’s (the Nine Saints) leadership model that is often considered successful in Islamizing the Javanese community in a relatively short time and almost without conflict. Through the literature search using analytic descriptive, this study brings the conclusion that based on the conventional leadership model division, the Walisongo’s leadership can be categorized into transformational leadership with characteristics capable of fostering trust, pride, loyalty, and respect of Javanese society. In addition, the Walisongo's leadership also conforms to the characteristics proposed by Tobroni, which include spiritual leadership, with characteristics based on the divine aspect, done with honesty and sincerely, drawing public sympathy and mobilizing them to follow the Walisongo’s teachings. This research also produces a finding that the success of Walisongo in educating the people of Java is due to their concern on the efforts to meet the basic needs of the society and provide models to follow.

Abstract

This paper aims to offer a comprehensive idea for one of the issues of Indonesia’s education, particularly in Islamic education. The issues deal with low student achievement as well as the phenomenon of teacher situated in a mechanistic curriculum, through motivation theories proposed by Abraham Maslow and David McClelland. A qualitative approach was designed in this library research. The study employed discourse analysis and cultural analysis as the methods of data analysis regarding the reality of Indonesia’s education. This study promotes the urgency of enhancing students’ motivation in experiencing Islamic education, either by fulfilling five basic needs as suggested in the Maslow’s theory or by fostering need for achievement (nAch) as portrayed in the McClelland’s theory, to explore the national education problems. This study depicts that motivation constitutes the main factor that significantly contributes to students’ achievement. It, likewise, denotes the students’ abilities in developing learning materials through their creativity and innovations in terms of their own potential, specifically for Islamic education.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with diverse cultures, religions, and traditions that continue to thrive and develop within society. Among these various religious practices, tahlilan is one tradition that is still practiced by Muslims today. This study aims to deepen the understanding of the normative basis of tahlilan based on tauhid zikr, prayers for the deceased from the Quran and hadith, as well as its socio-cultural values such as solidarity and religious moderation. This study applies a qualitative research method that mainly relies on literature sources. The references used are from nationally and internationally accredited journals and scientific articles published in the last five years. This literature review is expected to broaden the understanding of the tahlilan tradition, thereby providing a solid foundation for analyzing the issues under study. Various previous studies have shown that tahlilan is the result of the acculturation of Islam with local culture since the Islamization of Java. As an implication, this study shows that the tradition of tahlilan has an important contribution in maintaining the balance between Islamic teachings and local culture.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the reciprocal relationship between Islam and local culture in the religious practices of Javanese society through a literature review method. The study reviews various scholarly works and recent field research (2020–2025) that discuss traditions such as slametan, nyadran, tingkeban, sedekah bumi, as well as the pesantren education model based on kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) as forms of integration between Islam and Javanese culture. The analysis employs an interpretive approach to explore the symbolic meanings and social functions of these traditions. The findings indicate that the development of Islam in Java is accommodative, adaptive, and contextual. Local religious traditions are not viewed as contradictory to Islamic teachings but rather serve as means of da’wah (religious outreach), moral education, and the strengthening of religious moderation. Therefore, methodological approaches in Islamic studies should consider local culture as an integral part of the epistemology of Islam Nusantara

Abstract

This study examines Marx’s theory which states that in the process of capitalization, small land farmers will be displaced by large land farmers. This study employs a qualitative approach using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. Through participatory field observation techniques, the study also conducted in-depth interviews with farmers. Data were analyzed using an inductive approach. The findings indicate that Marx’s theory does not occur in Aman Malar. The decline in agriculture is caused by decreasing soil fertility, high production costs, land conversion, and climate change. Meanwhile, the survival strategies of small land farmers include practicing intercropping patterns, taking additional jobs, and managing household finances.
